As the world s first industrialised city, it has its roots firmly set in innovation and business. It s undoubtedly the most popular city for students in the UK, with a strong cosmopolitan character and a diverse population. MANCHESTER STUDENT LIVING Manchester student life The media and cultural hub of the North, Manchester has an enormous amount to offer. Manchester Fashion Institute is located on the main University campus in a prime location that s just a ten-minute walk from the many arts and cultural venues in the city centre. Students Union Our new 10m Union building, in the heart of the Manchester campus, provides outstanding spaces for student events, meeting friends, catching up on your studies or joining student clubs or societies. Music From niche and intimate venues to one of the largest arenas in Europe, Manchester is famous for its music. Therefore, we have specialist teams to provide the right support, from application through to graduation and beyond. The University s dedicated student services team offers international students career advice, counselling, chaplaincy and learning support. Career Support We work hard to improve our students employability. The Careers and Employability Service provides valuable help and advice including a Careers Information Centre. They provide books and online resources offering details of many graduate vacancies, plus opportunities to meet employers on campus. They also provide workshops on writing effective CVs and practising successful interview techniques, as well as courses for developing teamwork, leadership, project management and communication skills. 10 11 INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY Manchester Met s International Office If this is the first time that you have lived away from your home and family we understand that the thought of spending time in a different country may be a little overwhelming, so we do our best to help you to prepare. Much of the team in the International Office at the University have spent time in different countries, so they are uniquely placed to understand your life as an international student. The International Society The International Society is committed to promoting international friendship and celebrating cultural diversity. It hosts regular social events, arranges community-based projects and organises trips to cities and places of interest, such as London and the Lake District. There is a comprehensive three-day welcome programme in September to help you settle into university life. The programme provides information about enrolment at the University and there are activities to help you meet other international students. The International team also runs the Airport Welcome Service, which helps you get to your accommodation.

12 13 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITES As part of your chosen degree there will be opportunities to complete a 2-4 week industry internship and study a unit which looks at complex approaches to CVs and job applications, where to look for jobs, how to self-promote and how to find support after graduation. Across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, our courses cover fashion design, business, promotion, buying and technology. Your life as a fashion professional starts here. We have a selection of courses which have a particularly strong international focus and appeal to international students who might be considering study in Manchester. BA (Hons) International Fashion (Top Up) This top up degree is the perfect course for students who wish to use their current qualifications to develop skills in international fashion practices. On successful completion of this 1-year top up you are able to progress directly on to one of the following MA or MSc postgraduate degrees at Manchester Fashion Institute. MA/MSc Fashion and Business This 1-year degree is aimed at both fashion creatives who wish to gain a sound knowledge of business to underpin their practice and students from a business background who wish to gain a professional understanding of fashion. You are given the option to complete either an MA or MSc degree on this programme. MA Fashion Buying and Merchandising Management This is a one-year, industry-led conversion course that gives you the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge of contemporary fashion buying and merchandising from a managerial perspective. Developed in conjunction with industry specialists to inform and maintain contemporary content and foster innovative projects. 16 17 BA (HONS) INTERNATIONAL FASHION (TOP-UP) Introduction This one-year top-up course offers direct entry at Level 6 to students who have previously completed a relevant HND (or equivalent), or Level 5 of a relevant undergraduate degree, and wish to use their current qualifications to develop skills in international fashion practices. The BA (Hons) International Fashion programme will equip you with a thorough understanding of fashion practice throughout the global fashion supply chain. There will be a strong element of internationalisation and the course will prepare you for entry into the competitive global market, whether in your country of origin or international employment destinations. Programme Overview This dedicated final year programme offers two pathways in Business Practice and Design Practice. The pathway structure allows you to specialise in your chosen field, whilst also working collaboratively on industry projects across both pathways. As part of the Negotiated Project Unit you will have the opportunity to complete a 2-4 week industry internship. Successful Completion Upon successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress directly onto a Masters degree at Manchester Fashion Institute. 18 19 BA (HONS) INTERNATIONAL FASHION (TOP-UP) FASHION BUSINESS PRACTICE BA (HONS) INTERNATIONAL FASHION (TOP-UP) FASHION DESIGN PRACTICE Introduction The Fashion Business Practice pathway will explore real market insight and future global trends, whilst developing students with the management, leadership, strategic and financial skills required to become a forward-thinking fashion business practitioner, capable of making clear, appropriate and responsible management decisions within an international framework. Units The Business of Global Fashion Introduces students to the complexities of the contemporary fashion industry and the global supply chain. Global Strategy This unit enables you to develop your knowledge of global strategies adapted by organisations and apply critical thinking to explore new opportunities and strategic directions. Negotiated Project Informed by international culture, you will devise, negotiate, plan and disseminate a piece of research with outcomes relating to innovative business concepts. You will apply your learning to industry practice in an internship of up to four weeks. And an option of either: Fashion Research In this unit, you will carry out an individual project focusing on a topic of your choice within the broad framework of critical and contextual studies. Fashion Entrepreneurship This unit offers unique opportunities for students to collaborate with other pathways to develop a business plan. You have the opportunity to put theory into practice and to utilise and reflect upon industry practices in preparation for employment. Application The application process for the Business Practice pathway will include a skype call/personal interview and a review of a sample of work. Units The Business of Global Fashion Introduces students to the complexities of the contemporary fashion industry and the global supply chain. Industry Projects Includes live industry briefs that require you to conduct rigorous design research in response to defined international markets and consumers. Negotiated Project Informed by international culture, you will devise, negotiate, plan and disseminate a piece of research with outcomes relating to innovative design concepts. You will apply your learning to industry practice in an internship of up to four weeks. 20 21 MA/MSC FASHION AND BUSINESS Introduction The Fashion and Business MA/MSc is a multi-disciplinary course which sits equally between the Manchester Fashion Institute and the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School. The new programme draws on established expertise and cross-faculty specialists who understand the diversity of the fashion industry, thus recognising that the core component of a viable and sustainable fashion business is the product itself. It is aimed at fashion creatives who wish to gain a sound knowledge of business to underpin their practice, and students from a business background who wish to gain a professional understanding of fashion. There is the opportunity within the new course to create fashion products, either garment or promotion based which are rooted in business. You are also able to follow a personal route, which is tailored to your interests and career aspirations. All students completing the programme will exit with an MA or an MSc in Fashion and Business. The work that you generate throughout the course, presented through individual portfolios or bodies of work, will define your exit award. Length 1 year full-time Programme Overview The MA/MSc Fashion and Business is defined by product and commerce and all units have been selected to reflect the fashion industry from concept to consumer and beyond. Graduates will develop creative and commercial skills through a variety of projects and case studies, developing a deep understanding of the relationship of fashion products across the broad range of business environments within the global supply chain. 22 23 MA FASHION BUYING AND MERCHANDISING MANAGEMENT Introduction This one-year, industry-led conversion course offers you the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge of contemporary fashion buying and merchandising from a managerial perspective. Focusing on the global fashion cycle you will have the opportunity to develop fashion focused commercial awareness, fashion product knowledge, fashion research skills and creative fashion management. The course combines the vocational realities of fashion buying and merchandising, by analysing theoretical and practical perspectives on realworld business issues. You will have the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of finance, influences of industry change, profit margins, pricing, sales strategies and turnover. The programme includes a range of professional, managerial and personal skill development including negotiating, costing and relationship management. As well as business acumen, you will develop visual and communication skills to enable you to operate successfully within the global fashion industry. Length 1 year full-time Programme overview You will gain a comprehensive understanding of how the processes of buying and merchandising operate in the global fashion industry.
