A N G E L C H A N G FALL 2008
A N G E L C H A N G FALL 2008 Progress has always started from a forward-thinking idea. Jules Verne predicted the invention of the submarine in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Leonardo da Vinci sketched blueprints of helicopters centuries before they could be built. It was through their vision that they gave the public a picture of the future -- and what the public, in turn, made into reality over time. This season, I used advanced-technology fabrics to build a travel wardrobe based around three-day, fiveday, and seven-day trips. One jacket glows in the dark, another vest heats up on its own, ski pants hook up to mp3 players, and graphic prints change color when touched by a warm body. We will continue to travel more in the future, and we will need a wardrobe to facilitate our nomadic lifestyle. Taking this as a starting point, three artists collaborated with me on this collection. Olaf Breuning drew child-like sketches of Nature overcoming Man, Johannes Wohnseifer worked with a color-changing global time zone print, and Tim Dubitsky attached speakers into glow-in-the-dark satin jackets. Through our collaborations, we hope these will inspire the travel wardrobe of the future. - Angel Chang Travel wardrobes for work or play designed for 3-day, 5-day and 7-day trips. Collaborating artists submitted work based on their travel preference.
C4N.08m.08 Helsinki duchess satin jacket with glow-in-the-dark fabric cashmere lining, and speakers built into the hood. (Coat glows-in-the-dark at night) Our childhood painting hero Bob Ross was the source for this season s nature-inspired direction. I learned how to paint in his style as a child growing up in Muncie, Indiana -- where he lived and produced his popular TV shows. With emerging artist Tim Dubitsky, we recreated the pop icon s signature landscapes to print on satin. Tim thought it would be funny to build speakers into the hood so the wearer could relax to Bob Ross s soothing voice -- instructing her on the joys of painting fluffy little clouds. Glow-in-the-dark fabric was used so we could find each other in the woods at night, in case we got lost searching for one of Bob s nature scenes. 1
The fabric for this cashmere/wool sweater was chosen not only for its comfort, but also for its sustainability. (It s made from regenerated sweaters). The standing funnel-neck sandwiches an inner layer of organza to mimic the shape of a cozy scarf. In fact, the sweater retains heat so well that there is no need to wear a jacket over this during winter weather. Just pull on a pair of elbow-length sleeves and go! Swiss artist Olaf Breuning contributed this drawing of a post-human happy world. It shows what will happen in the future when humans become extinct and nature cheerfully regenerates itself. The drawing was inspired by Al Gore s An Inconvenient Truth on climate change and the impact of human energy consumption on the planet. With its luscious drape and glamorous sheen, this polyester dress feels like liquid metal against skin. This self-heating cashmere rib vest keeps her toasty during the chilly winter months. Noble Biomaterials, the supplier of silver fabric to the U.S. Army, developed this unique battery-powered heating system for us. Using conductive fabric instead of wires to transmit heat allowed us to design a washable jacket that is light-weight and scrunchable like a normal jacket. The silver lining is naturally anti-microbial and helps retain the heat on her body. Versality is key for the busy woman on the go. This jersey top worn at a business meeting can lengthen to a mini-dress for a high-profile event after work. The tuxedo-inspired jacket can be worn cinched elegantly at the waist or flung open like a rock star. No matter what situation she finds herself in, she will always be dressed appropriately. German artist Johannes Wohnseifer contributed this map of global time zones. He was inspired by the Danish work, My Night Is Your Day, that lights up time zones in real time to indicate what side of the world is sleeping or awake. The wearer can play with her dress and touch the areas she wants to turn yellow -- indicating daytime in those regions while the rest of the map print remains dark as night. This multi-functional dress can also be worn upside-down, with the skirt unbuttoned, or with the scarf removed for various looks.
