Watched by a live audience of thousands and a television audience in the hundreds of thousands, Westfield Style Pasifika has become a much anticipated event by designers and audiences alike. The show is a potent mix of traditional and contemporary fashion, music and dance featuring 300 of the country s most exciting Pacific entertainers - from models, church choirs and fire dancers through to opera singers, hip hop artists and more. Designers ranged in age from 16 to 60, male and female, all representative of the diverse multicultural mix that defines our nation and its unique style. Westfield Style Pasifika is a show that encompasses design, cultural performance and Pacific pride. These Pasifika strengths draw national and international attention, positioning Westfield Style Pasifika as a truly unique New Zealand fashion and performance experience. CATEGORIES FOR THE SHOW ARE: Pasifika Body Art, Traditionally Inspired, Asia Pasifika, Three Piece Collection of Day Wear, Pasifika Hero, Urban Street Wear, Pasifika Menswear, Evening Wear, Bridal, and Parent & Child. Auckland, the world s largest Polynesian city, looks forward to hosting the 15th annual Westfield Style Pasifika Awards at the internationally acclaimed Vector Arena.
DESIGN CATEGORIES: GUIDELINES PASIFIKA BODY ART / PAINTED ONLY Produce a statement of art to adorn nature's canvas - the skin! Using paint or pens create a contemporary pacific design. Please supply a paper drawn example of your design for prejudging showing how the front and back images will look on a body. Note: You must showcase your work for one show only on Friday 5th September. We prefer that you use your own model. The selected finalists of the M.A.C Pasifika Body Art category will receive $100 towards the cost of materials plus a M.A.C Pro product pack. TRADITIONALLY INSPIRED Any garment that has been born from a traditional idea or vision. Perhaps a dress made from flax or coconut fiber. Be creative, be imaginative while keeping tradition in mind. ASIA PASIFIKA As much a part of the Pacific are the peoples and cultures of Asia. As contributors to the cultural diversity of New Zealand, let the flavours of Asia mix with those of the Pacific to produce a unique blend of Asia Pasifika style. Allow yourself to be influenced by all things Asian under the skies of our Pacific nation. 3 PIECE COLLECTION: GARMENTS FOR THE DAY In times gone by, traditional Pacific daywear garments were highly influenced by religious values giving birth to the Puletasi, Lava lava and Mu u mu u. This section requires designers to submit three garments with a similar theme. Incorporate a common factor like a print or colour. Define your own boundaries - be inventive and creative! PASIFIKA HERO Go for it! Who better to epitomise Pasifika Style. Celebrate the design flair of NZ s gay community. Remember the theme is Pasifika Hero. This is a night on the town with the heroes of the Pacific! Note: It s preferable that you supply your own Hero model. URBAN PASIFIKA STREET WEAR Funk it up for 2008. Garments for today s urban bruthas and sisters. Take it to the streets with Style Pasifika. PASIFIKA MENS WEAR Whether it's Pacific in style, fabric or content. Be it streetwear, casual, dress or sporty. As long as it's pasifika male it'll look great in this section. PASIFIKA EVENING WEAR A garment of style, chic, and class. This section is for designs with a Pasifika feel, look or fabric for men and women to enjoy the evening hours in elegance. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY STEP (1) Entry Form (A) must be completed and mailed by Friday 11th July. Mail To: Westfield Style Pasifika P.O. Box 91782 Victoria St West 1142 Auckland, New Zealand. Include your non-refundable entry/administration fee of $35 (GST inclusive) per garment entry. Additional entry forms available on request or original may be photocopied. Note: An entry into the 3 Piece Collection category requires three garments but is classified as one entry so only one fee of $35 applies. STEP (2) All garments with Entry Form (B) must be received by Saturday 2nd August. Entry Form (B) is to be attached to each individual garment. Note: Pasifika Body Art drawings are also due at this time for pre-judging. Entries must arrive on either: Thursday 31st July or Friday 1st August or Saturday 2nd August Personally delivered or couriered to: IMPORTANT! Do not drop garments off outside of these hours as we will not have staff there to receive them. We take no responsibility for garments dropped off outside of the specified hours. * There is no restriction on the number of entries submitted. * All entry form details must be completed. * A photo with relevant details of how the garment is to be worn MUST be included with your garment. Combine the romance of that special day with the passion of the Pacific to create your garment. PARENT AND CHILD One parent and one child in matching garments. You decide whether it s Sunday best, traditional or casual wear. Share the moment together in clothing that reflects the bond of parent and child.
OVERSEAS ENTRANTS ONLY You may send a photograph or video clip of your entry to: SIZES We are leaving this open. We would like to see garments and models that reflect the true cultural variations that make New Zealand so unique. MODELS Models will only be selected at the discretion of the organisers. Your photo/video clip must be received no later than Friday July 11th 2008. If your entry is selected this will give time for the garments to be sent to New Zealand for preliminary judging with other garments by Saturday 9th August 2008. For customs clearance, please ensure a photo of your garment/s is attached to the outside of your box. Please ensure that materials used do not contravene Customs Regulations. All related costs must be covered by the entrant. SUBMISSION AND RETURN OF ENTRIES All entrants are responsible for the cost of packaging and transport of their clearly labelled entries. Within your clearly named package please ensure your garment is on a strong hanger and in a see-through full-length plastic bag. Entries marked for return must have a street address not P.O. Box. Return postage or courier fee must be included. Westfield Style Pasifika will not pay for the costs of returning your garments. Garments must be collected on Saturday 6 September 2008. Designers will be notified of time and location. Garments not collected after the required date will no longer be the responsibility of Westfield Style Pasifika except in the capacity to donate them to a worthy cause as the organisers deem fit. Garments or drawings will only be accepted on either Thursday 31st July, Friday 1st or Saturday 2nd August 2008 by own drop off or courier. JUDGING Garments will be judged on originality, innovation, creativity, workmanship and Pasifika style. All entries will be considered by the judging panel at the preliminary judging to take place on August 9th 2008. Only Style Pasifika crew and judges will be present. Finalists will be selected for presentation at the Westfield Style Pasifika show September 5th 2008. The judges retain the right to re-classify garments and recommend accessories. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Unsuccessful entrants will be notified by mail. GARMENT COLLECTION Garments will be available for collection on Saturday 6th September 2008 (designers will be notified of time and location) or returned by courier if you have included the fee to do this. IMPORTANT! Designers must sew a fabric label or mark clearly on each entry and accessory with the following details: Your name, address, category and title of each garment. This must be clearly visible inside the garment but not inside pockets. It must also not be visible on the outside of the garment. Westfield Style Pasifika will not take responsibility for unlabelled work. PRIZES Westfield Style Pasifika Supreme Award $3000 Westfield Business Scholarships - TBC INSURANCE Runner up $2000 $1,000 to each of the 10 category winners It is each entrants responsibility to insure their property if they wish. Westfield Style Pasifika will take all possible care with the garments and accessories under their control, but they take no responsibility for loss or damage to these items. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION FOR WORK SUBMITTED Please consider that the garments you submit are for public display on a large catwalk. They should be complete as a total concept i.e. if entering a skirt there must also be an accompanying top. Their structure must be able to cope with several fittings and fast performance changes. Westfield Style Pasifika and the sponsors reserve the right to retain any garments and to use these and the names of their designers for a period of up to twenty-four months following the awards for publicity purposes.
