Webb has been walking the coastal footpaths and exploring the sea cliffs of North Devon since the 1950s, taking photographs and drawing the dramatic scenery in order to create geo-morphic landscape paintings. Kester will be giving an illustrated talk about Exmoor to NDA members. Inspired by E.A.Newell Arber s challenge in The Coast Scenery of North Devon, 1910:- It would be a proud accomplishment to have traversed the whole of the shoreline from Porlock westwards - Kester Webb is the creator of The Hidden Edge of Exmoor Project. He has now scrambled, boulder-hopped and rock-climbed the entire length of North Devon s beaches and given numerous illustrated talks of his exploration for charities and groups throughout the region. Exeter Open Studios / NDA Exhibition News NORTH DEVON ARTS NOVEMBER MEETING As there will be no meeting of North Devon Arts in November (due to the exhibition at The Picture House in Exeter) we would like to hold a meeting at Broomhill hosted by The Broomhill Group (the NDA writers/poets group). Rinus will feed us if there is a reasonable number of people taking up this invitation. We are considering all sorts of ideas to make an entertaining evening based on words. There will be no pressure on anyone to create or perform anything. Anyone who considers words are not their thing will be surprised! The Broomhill Group welcomes your support exeter open studios Exeter Open Studios, 4 th to 6 th November 2011 For the sixth year, Exeter artists will be opening their doors to the public for Exeter s Open Studios event. Studios, homes and gallery spaces will be open over the three days around the city, with artists welcoming local people and visitors to see their work. A huge range of artforms will be on show. Find out how traditional Byzantine Orthodox icons are painted, see installations of cityscapes made from circuit boards inside acrylic and glass coffee tables, visit a magical mosaic mansion or follow a printmaking tour around the city. This year some of the artists will be offering workshops and demonstrations of their craft during the three days. These include, printmaking, exploring paper pulp, 2D and 3D animation and oil painting techniques (see photos below). Exeter Open Studios is an artist led event and hold an annual fundraising auction of work specially created by the participating artists. This year the auction takes place on Thursday 20 th Oct at Real Foods, the exciting new community food store in Exeter and will be a perfect opportunity to buy those early Christmas presents. Look out for free full colour guides with artist, venue and opening time details plus maps from tourist information centres, shops, libraries and other venues in and around Exeter. Visit: www.exeteropenstudios.co.uk for more information and to follow us on Twitter or Facebook. Results from the Square Picture Show Here are some of the results from our three month summer show at Broomhill. Sales totalled 3,724 which is an excellent figure! Nearly 40% of the artists who took part had at least one sale. Our stewards cost just under 1,000 paid for from entry fees and the show did not cost NDA any more than it raised. Some of you were in touch with us during the show when you were not able to get in to the Stables despite it being advertised as open. One problem for us is that Broomhill needs the space for Weddings and conferences, sometimes at short notice. The committee has decided to hold the show next year for the usual period of one month, fully stewarded seven days a week and we hope this will solve some of this year s hiccups. I would like to thank everyone involved for hanging, publicising and displaying work in the show. Sales are only part of the picture but I hope you will agree they were good! Our next show - Picture House Exeter Look at last month s newsletter for the call to artists for this two week show in November. Forms are attached and should be returned to me as soon as possible please to reserve your place, we already have an interesting groups of entries, some from newly exhibiting members but all with reasonably priced works designed to convey to our invited guests the breadth of work available in NDA. As this is our first show outside North Devon there are inevitably requirements for travel - but we do encourage you to see this as an adventure and the start of bigger things to come. Next shows If you are embarking on new work bear in mind - New year New Work at Broomhill in the early months of 2012, the call to artists will be in November s issue. A planned show by newly exhibiting members, perhaps needing a little help and encouragement to show will be offered in May for Bideford Hospital walls, no theme but cheering and bright pictures especially welcome (no size or medium limitations). The Appledore Festival will hopefully run with our contributions added. The Square Picture Show with the same size limitations as usual, and plenty more - so watch this space, get involved and get out there with your work! Sarah Woolfenden exhibitions@northdevonarts.co.uk BROOMHILL GROUP at the APPLEDORE BOOK FESTIVAL The Broomhill Group of poets and writers performed at the Appledore Fringe Poetry event. Cream of Devon. The evening was well attended, particularly as it started at 9pm, and had very positive feedback about the poetry. A collaborative round was performed in which the poem Coast and Moor was read in turn. Later in the programme each poet read a specially composed piece of their own work. There were two members of NDA in the audience, they are thanked for their support. 2

Exhibitions / Opportunities Speed Skills Success The evening, although very informal (and perhaps a tad chaotic) worked extremely well, seeing members engaged in deep conversations and thought as they worked their way around the various skills on offer at the four tables. Skills covered included, Networking, Volunteering and Gaining Repeat Business, Writing About Your Work and PR, How to use Your Photographs and an Internet - Question and Answer session. These last two tables had laptops to show members how to achieve the various web-skills required to ensure a professional approach. This nice comment was sent in from a member; Just a word or two to thank you for all your valuable help and information at the NDA meeting last Wednesday. As a new recruit I found it a very helpful event and left with a spring in my step (and I only had one glass of wine!) Also during the evening I noticed several members not visiting the skills tables, but apparently enjoying the opportunity to chat and discuss their art, giving great encouragement and bouncing ideas off each other. This is what NDA is all about, meeting new members, enjoying the company and passing on useful information to fellow members. If any members were not able to come along on the evening and are interested in receiving papers on these subjects, please contact Stella at: events@northdevonarts.co.uk Thanks to all who made this such a successful evening.
