The season starts with our major new exhibition Alberto Giacometti: A Line Through Time which marks the 50th anniversary of the artist s death. The Sainsbury Centre has one of the most significant collections of Giacometti s work and a large number of rarely seen pieces will be exhibited alongside important loans from around the world including from the Louisiana Museum in Denmark, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum and many private collections. See Inside Exhibitions Members events Spotlight Looking back Exclusive members shop discount The show will explore the sources that inspired Giacometti including ancient Cycladic, Etruscan and Egyptian works and how he in turn inspired other artists with his compelling vision of humanity. Finally, don t miss Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector (until 24 January) or Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty (until 20 March), both of which are free for Members. Booking Information Tickets can be purchased by calling Gallery Reception on 01603 593199, Monday Friday. 9am 5pm. Photo: Pete Huggins 1

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS SPRING 2016 Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty Until 20 March 2016 Czech-born Alphonse Mucha (1860 1939) is one of the most celebrated artists of the fin-de-siècle. Rising to international fame with his elegant designs for decorative panels, and stunning advertising posters, le style Mucha became synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement. Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty explores the work of the artist, around the theme of beauty the core principle underlying his artistic philosophy. The show includes over 60 works drawn primarily from the collection of the Mucha Trust, focusing on drawings, paintings, photographs and iconic posters, such as Gismonda, Mucha s first poster designed for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. Like artists of the British Arts and Crafts movement, it was Mucha s belief that beautiful works of art should improve the quality of peoples lives. I was happy to be involved in art for the people and not for private drawing rooms - Alphonse Mucha Talk and Exhibition Tour Saturday 20 February 2pm, meet at Gallery Reception Price: 5.50 Friends/ 5 Members/Patrons Free Non-members 7.50 Join Curator Claire Allerton for an exclusive talk and guided tour of Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty. EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS SPRING 2016 Alberto Giacometti: A Line Through Time 23 April 29 August 2016 This landmark exhibition is dedicated to the work of Alberto Giacometti, one of the giants of twentieth century art, celebrated as a sculptor, painter and draughtsman. The exhibition will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the artist s death and is an exciting opportunity to examine the artist s influence amongst his contemporaries in Paris and his impact on British art in the post-war period. Exhibition Talk and Tour Friday 6 May 2pm, meet at Gallery Reception Price: 5.50 Friends/ 5 Members/ Patrons Free Non-members 7.50 Join exhibition curator Claudia Milburn for an exclusive talk and guided tour of Alberto Giacometti: A Line Through Time. Over 100 works will be featured in the exhibition in a variety of media including sculpture, painting, works on paper, photography, film and important archival material. A significant component of the exhibition will be dedicated to Giacometti s impact in Britain and feature works by artists including Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Henry Moore, William Turnbull, Eduardo Paolozzi, Frank Auerbach, Elisabeth Frink and Isabel Rawsthorne. EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS SPRING 2016 Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector Until 24 January 2016 This major exhibition curated and organised by Barbican Centre celebrates the many and varied motivations for collecting. The exhibition presents the fascinating personal collections of post-war and contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Arman, Peter Blake, Edmund de Waal, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Sol LeWitt, Martin Parr, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Pae White. While many of the participating artists are recognised internationally, their collections are often private and less wellknown, and the majority have never been seen in the UK before this major exhibition. Their collections range from mass-produced memorabilia to rare art and artefacts, and from natural history specimens to curios and objects reflecting popular culture. These extraordinary collections help reveal the creative processes of some of the most important artists of the last 50 years. Romilly draws out the inherent characteristic of the pieces and gives them a resonance well beyond their function. Newfoundland Until 10 April 2016 Newfoundland is an exhibition of work by contemporary jeweller Romilly Saumarez Smith and photographer Verdi Yahooda. Each of Romilly s pieces is unique and has at its core Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Medieval metalwork, dropped or discarded hundreds of years ago. Originally these objects were everyday domestic things, but lost in the ground and buried in time they have become particular and special. As part of the Newfoundland exhibition, photographer Verdi Yahooda has made some exceptional photographic prints of the original metal finds. Exhibition Talk and Tour Friday 4 March 2pm, meet at Gallery Reception Price: 5.50 Friends/ 5 Members/ Patrons Free/ Non-members 7.50 Join curator Claudia Milburn for an exclusive talk and guided tour followed by light refreshments. 5

SPOTLIGHT SPRING 2016 Spotlight: Hanna-Liis Kont and Rose Hughes When did you join the Centre as Fellows? (H) We both joined the Sainsbury Centre at the same time of course which was at the end of September 2015. What were you both doing before you joined us? (Rose) I was studying Illustration at Loughborough University gaining my BA. (Hanna) I was working in a Art Museum in Estonia as the Exhibitions Department Coordinator. So what was this museum like then? (H) It s a bit like the Sainsbury Centre, However, it was owned by the State, and was a sort of blend of your Natural History Museum and a local museum and as you can imagine contains lots of Estonian art. How did you become interested in the Centre and what made you join the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts? (H) I was looking to study for my Masters and the course offered by the UEA offered the opportunity to combine studies as well as having a hands-on practical side too. (R) I didn t want to be a freelance illustrator working on my own, as I enjoy working with people. So I am enjoying working in the Education Department as well as the Marketing Department at the centre. This gives me the opportunity to combine both practical and study best practice. What has been your greatest challenge since joining here and why? (R) Working between departments has been both a joy and a challenge - building bridges and making connections, really. (H) It s all been positive thus far. It s been exciting working on lots of forthcoming exhibitions all at the same time, prioritising, and tracking the objects for each exhibition. What has been your most memorable moment thus far? (R) Our Magnificent Family Day. There was a father who wanted to make a mask, and I am sure that he was having more fun and enjoyment than his family! (H) Seeing my first exhibition moving rapidly from conception to being displayed in the Centre. Newfoundland an exhibition of Romilly Saumarez Smith s jewellery, is now on display in the East End Gallery. 8 Images: Left, Hanna-Liis Kont. Right, Rose Hughes. Photos: Chris Sanham.

SPOTLIGHT SPRING 2016 What has been your most memorable challenge so far? (H) Taking my own phone calls here. I am used to dealing with staff, but being able to speak to the owners of exhibits to be loaned is a great privilege. I am beginning to feel part of the Sainsbury Centre family. (R) Keeping typos under control while working on our social media platforms within Marketing and making sure we keep our profile high in the family of Norwich Museums and galleries. Outside of the Centre what are you both interested in or do? (H) I enjoy the theatre, all sorts of dance, but I don t really get much free time as study takes up most of it! (R) The same as Hanna really except I still enjoy doing design projects for friends as they don t always have the same skill set as me, and I really enjoy helping them out. What do you find most fulfilling about your roles? (R) The great diversity of things which are on offer for me to do here. I also enjoy opportunities and the people here of course, they have all been so welcoming. I am learning so much from everyone as there is a great wealth of knowledge to tap into. (H) I enjoy the fact that is so diverse. For example, one minute I m installing an art work, then next doing some research work around a particular item to be included in a forthcoming exhibition. So what s next? Anything planned or in the pipeline? (R) Well our Masters programme finishes in October 2016 and hopefully we will pass. I would then like to work in a museum environment, perhaps in a local social history museum whilst also shoehorning my creative side in as well. (H) I would like to work in a similar environment really, but I would like to continue working in the curatorial side of an arts museum. I may possibly return to Estonia. Hanna and Rose thank you very much for your time and for kindly answering all my questions today. On behalf of all our Members, we wish you well with your chosen careers. LOOKING BACK SPRING 2016 Looking back Autumn 2015 Exhibition talks and tours September saw Acting Director, Ghislaine Wood taking Members on a memorable tour of Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector. These events are highly recommended as they offer a unique insight into exhibitions, the people behind them as well as the artists themselves. A large group of members also took one last opportunity to be guided around Abstraction and the Art of John Golding on its penultimate day. The Thrill of Collecting: A Valuer s Tales A extremely entertaining evening was enjoyed in the company of qualified valuer James Glennie from Art & Antiques Appraisals Ltd. Members were regaled with fascinating stories including the bungalow that revealed million pound treasures, the curse of Sekhemka and many other personal stories. Members evening Professor Paul Greenhalgh hosted an exclusive Members evening including a guided tour of Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty. We thank Paul for his time and for answering all our questions on the night. Christmas lunch and social event Friends of Norwich Cathedral and Sainsbury Centre members held a joint Christmas Lunch in the Hostry of Norwich Cathedral. A very large group gathered for what was a most enjoyable occasion. May I thank all those members who came along and supported our events this past season, and I look forward to welcoming you to our forthcoming events.
