New Manhattan Studios New York City www.newmanhattanstudios.com Instagram: newmanhattanstudios FIRST SESSIONS WITH NEW MANHATTAN STUDIOS ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED BY NEW MODELS This PDF has been prepared to answer many of the questions that we typically get from new models. Please note that this is a general document and not all points may be relevant to your photo session. Importantly, this PDF is offered for guidance only and nothing in this document should be construed as part of a job offer. Please feel free to raise any further questions with your photographer. What do I need to bring to the photo session? ID. You must bring a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver s license or a passport). WARDROBE. While the studio maintains a number of prop items, we do not provide wardrobe for first sessions. Clothing you select for your session should be clean and pressed but does not need to be new or high fashion. You should not have to purchase anything new for your session; more than anything else, your wardrobe choices should fit well, flatter your physique and reflect your own taste and style. For basic fashion/portfolio work we ask for three looks: 1) casual street clothes (as you would wear on a Saturday at the mall), 2) business casual (that you would wear to work in an office, including at least one plain, button-front shirt) and 3) a dressier outfit (such as you might wear to a nice restaurant on a first date). Wardrobe requirements for fitness/physique models is shorter as much of the session is focused on fitness and physique work. We encourage you to wear casual street clothes to the studio that we can use in your session. Additionally, if not wearing them, please bring a pair of jeans or slacks and a plain, button-front shirt (preferably white) with a traditional collar. Importantly, bring a small selection of workout clothes that will allows us to vary your look over what will be the majority of the session. While we concede that fitness, not fashion, is the focus of such sessions, you are still trying to impress and should dress for the local gym, not your basement workout space.

What happens on set? You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes early for your first session, giving us time to meet, sign paperwork, review your wardrobe and discuss our mutual objectives and goals for the shoot. Before we begin you will be required to present a government issued ID and sign a standard model release. A copy of the studio s model release is attached. Any model who has worked professionally will be familiar with such releases and New Manhattan Studios uses a release that closely conforms to industry standards. New models are encouraged to read the release before arriving on set and to Google the term standard model release and compare our form to others in use. After introductions and paperwork, you will have about 15 minutes to prepare yourself and your wardrobe while we finish setting up the studio for your session. If needed, the dressing room has an iron, ironing board and a steamer and your stylist is available to help with the wardrobe. He or she will also be assisting on the set with lights and occasionally working as a second cameraman. Once on the paper, it s lights, cameras and captures for two or three hours. Over the course of a typical session we aim to do from four to eight set-ups, varying the wardrobe, backdrop and lighting as we capture head shots, fashion and glamor shots, and physique and fitness shots. In addition to street clothes, physique models will spend more time in gym clothes and we suggest that fitness models bring a small variety of such items so that we can vary their look over the course of the session. Importantly, do not over pack, we like to have choices but may not have time to use all that you bring. Your comfort is important The studio does its best to provide a secure and comforting environment for all models. We are among several companies and photo studios operating out of a converted cigar factory, part of the thriving arts community of Long Island City. There is a reception area and a private dressing room inside the studio and a public bathroom down the hall. We are professionals and behave accordingly. When working with a new model, we work on a closed set and do not allow visitors, clients or guests on the set while working. In addition to the photographer, at least one other person (a stylist or production assistant) will be present in the studio at all times, either actively assisting on your session or working just outside the shoot area. If you wish to bring a friend, please make arrangements with your photographer prior to your session.

How am I paid? If you are being hired for a specific project you will be paid according to the terms set by the photographer at the time he books your session. You will be paid in cash upon completion of the work and be asked to sign a receipt on the back side of the model release. Many first-time models are offered TFP sessions. As explained below, TFP is a barter arrangement whereby both you and the studio receive copies of the finished work from the session. A signed model release is required but no money is exchanged. Models are not charged any fees. As needed, the studio pays for the fees of stylists. What is a TFP photo session? TFP ( Trade for Portfolio also known as Time for Prints ) is an industry phrase that refers to barter arrangements whereby both the model and the photographer contribute their time to the session and both receive copies of the finished work. No money is exchanged. Approximately two to three weeks after the session you will receive an agreed-to number of electronic files with professionally-edited images from your session. You are free to have prints made to further your business or career or to post the images in online portfolios and on social media sites. The studio retains the copyright for all work and is permitted to use the images in promotional activities and in its online and offline portfolios and marketing materials/publications. New Manhattan Studios sets aside a limited amount of time each month to do TFP sessions for new models just starting their careers and developing their portfolios. As these sessions are designed to benefit the respective portfolios of each party, the model is treated as a client or cocreator for the purposes of the session and time is spent prior to the session to discuss the work to be captured. The Studio s contribution (in studio, staff and editing time) is valued in excess of $800 for a 3-hour professional portfolio session. Will I get any photos or credits? A few weeks after your session you will be given a number of digital images from your session for your own use. The studio retains the copyrights to all images but grants models free use of their copies in non-commercial ways. You may not sell the studio s images but you may post them online or add them to your portfolios. Whenever you use our images in social media or online we ask that you do not apply any filters or distort or alter the images in any way. We will always credit you (using your designated modeling name) as the model when promoting and distributing our work. We ask that you similarly credit the studio where appropriate when in posting our work in social media and online. Our Instagram ID is #newmanhattanstudios and our Model Mayhem account is #2207061.

Is there anything else I need to do to prepare for the session? IDEAS: If you have posing or shoot ideas, please bring them along. By their nature, most of our first sessions are designed to benefit both the studio s and the model s portfolios. We solicit your input and treat such sessions as collaborative efforts. GROOMING: You are expected to arrive clean and well-groomed. Unless we are requesting a specific look, your regular hair style should be fine. If possible, schedule any needed haircut one to two weeks prior to your session. (Hair that has grown in slightly looks more natural and is easier to style if needed.) We generally use a hair/make-up stylists only for women s sessions and employ a general stylist (for wardrobe and hair touch-ups) at men s sessions. Men having questions about facial or body hair should discuss them with the photographer or stylist in advance of the session. MANICURES: We prefer a natural look but we leave it to the discretion of female models as to the look they wish to have in their photos. Men are expected to have clean, trimmed nails, but a professional manicure is not required and nail polish is discouraged. REST AND FOOD: We encourage you to party after your shoot, not the night before it. We have cancelled shoots with models with bloodshot eyes and an exhausted appearance. Many physique models resist eating large meals the day of their shoot but we definitely encourage models to have something to eat before their session. Modeling is not easy and you ll be working a minimum of three hours; you need to keep your energy up. We generally have light snacks on hand (yoghurt, trail mix, protein bars). Ultimately, you know your body; just consider portions and timing of any meals on the day of your shoot. Finally, the single most important thing you can do to prepare for your shoot is to get a good night s sleep. Nothing makes a model look better than a well-rested, fresh and energetic appearance. And nothing is harder for a photographer to work with than an exhausted model with sagging eyes and a drooping countenance. Please confirm your session Models must confirm their session by phone or text 48 hours in advance. Phone or text: (212) 684-4872 This is a job, not a dinner reservation. We expect you to behave professionally. The studio is reserving time and space for your session and if you need to reschedule your shoot, please give us at least 24 hours notice. Models who fail to show up for a scheduled session without giving advance notice will not be rescheduled. Most sessions are scheduled in the studio s Long Island City studio, one to three subway stops outside of Manhattan, depending on the line. Directions by car and public transportation will be provided prior to your session.
