THE CAMILLE AND ERIC DURAND DOCENT COUNCIL Orange COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART Docent Doings September 2015 Dear Docents, President s Message It s been an unusually hot summer but it hasn t stopped visitors from coming to OCMA. Let me start by once again thanking those docents who have been touring these visitors through the current exhibition. What a fascinating exhibition and how well received it s been. I m sure the upcoming shows will generate the same enthusiasm. Docent activities will be in full swing starting this month. I hope you ve received the very beautiful invitation to our Fall Luncheon. Monday, September 28 th, will be the first full Docent Council meeting of the year. The meeting will be held in the Auditorium starting at 10:00 am. I m pleased to announce that Todd Smith, Director and CEO of OCMA will speak to us on the state-of-themuseum. Directly following the meeting the Board will host lunch in the museum building. Thank you to Gale Edelberg and Phyllis Mandel, Hospitality Co- Chairs, for planning a special day and a wonderful opportunity for docents to get together in a social setting. If you have not yet responded please do so by calling or emailing Gale or Phyllis. you at the Fall Luncheon on Monday, September 28 th. Best to you, Joyce Rosenblum President Sustaining Docent 2000 Director of Public Engagement Announcement Per the September 2 nd announcement from Todd Smith, OCMA Director and CEO: I am pleased to announce the appointment of Cassandra Coblentz to the position of director of public engagement. She begins with OCMA on September 14, 2015. In this role, Coblentz will oversee both the museum s adult public programming and tour program. She is also charged with developing and implementing a teen outreach program which will launch in 2016. Additionally, she will be a vital member of our team as we craft our beyond the walls museum experience during the transition to the Segerstrom Center. As always, please feel free to email or call me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding the museum or Docent Council. I look forward to seeing

A Soaring Success: the Kite Festival at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts A free Kite Festival was presented in partnership with the Orange County Museum of Art and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Sunday, August 23 rd from 2:00 6:00pm. Taking place at the new museum site, it was presented in conjunction with My Generation: Young Chinese Artists. The day looked promising despite the 85-degree temperature and continuous healthy gusts of wind. There were various kite and kite-flying displays, dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, and a selection of food trucks. Three stations were set up where different kinds of kites could be made. I tended the station set up to create stained glass kites using clear contact paper and pieces of cut up cellophane. It looked as though we had enough pre-cut materials for at least a thousand projects, no problem. People were eagerly lining the tables before 2:00, and shortly after the crowds were 4 to 5 deep waiting for an opening. For each piece of cellophane that was affixed to a kite, at least three were released to the wind, coloring the landscape around us. An hour and fifteen minutes into the festival we ran out of the contact paper, including the two back up rolls that were cut up as we worked. One mother, instead of being dismayed by this, said to me, It doesn t even have to resemble a kite, just some colorful pieces of paper attached to a string of yarn for her three year old, whose face reflected pure delight when presented with it. People used whatever materials we had to make a variety of artistic creations and no one appeared to be the least bit disappointed. All the other kite-making stations were also completely cleaned out, and people were still using bits and pieces from the various stations to create stuff, and thoroughly enjoying all of it, making this event an overwhelming success.
