Individual Records Department: Collection Type: The Black Watch Castle and Museum, Perth North American Powder Horns Accession number: BWRM.A2361 No. of items: 1 Category Equipment Object name: Powder horn Description Powder horn engraved with the name 'Hector McDonald, Musician,1st Battn. 42nd Regt', masonic symbols, St. Andrew and the cross, with a brown cotton cord in very poor condition. The cord is attached to a perforation at the bottom end [the cap or plug] of the horn, which is covered with red felt. The bottom of the horn has a decorative scalloped edge. Original description DISPLAY LABEL: This carved powder horn is inscribed to Hector MacDonald (1758-63). The Carvings are Masonic symbols. These include St Andrew and the cross, which are part of the Black Watch Lodge symbols. A2361. Battle scenes. Plug is made of wood. [Dimensions] Green cord with tassel. 1758. [1 of] Pair of powder horns decorated with maps tracing the routes of the British advance north into French Canada, 1758-60. The Black Watch fought throughout these campaigns. These are made from the horns of cattle or oxen and were intended to carry the gunpowder used in muskets. Mrs Stewart was Co-founder of The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and was involved in the Girl Guide Association. Major Stewart served with the Imperial Light Horse during the Boer War and with the Royal Scots Fusiliers during WWI. The couple retired to Perthshire in 1934, Major Stewart died in 1948 and then Mrs Stewart moved to South Africa in 1955, perhaps the combination of the later two events were behind the decision to give the powder horns to

It would have contained black powder used for charging his musket. This carved powder horn illustrates a map of North America. The map covers a large area, including the Delware River, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Halifax. The horn is inscribed to Captain A McBean. A1077. Volume 3 [A.758.3] covers the date range 6.4.1761 to 5.8.1761 and contains the following reference: [Montreal, 19th April 1761] The supernumerary Tomihauks & Powder Horns and Shot Bags belonging to the Light Infantry Company, also to be delivered into the store, the Commanding Officer of that Company taking care to make the men who have been drafted accomptable for what they have received, barring unavoidable losses in the service which the men will appear -. Others important references are: '[New York 30th April 1759] The Regt. to be under arms on Wednesday morning with there linen britches and leggans and packs tied up properly with their toplines, the officiers to be in their leggans also'.
