NO TIME FOR NOSTALGIA an interview with Franca Rame The professional and personal lives of Dario Fo and Franca Rame have been linked since they first met as young performers in Milan in 1952, but Franca s own many achievements deserve to be disentangled. As a member of the Rame family-company of strolling players, she was born into the central Italian theatre tradition, and in her life she has shown her mettle as actress, author, political militant, social activist, and more recently as senator. Her delicate skill in serious or even tragic parts led some to wonder what she would have become had she, in a parallel universe, not met Fo. The equally intriguing question is what would Dario Fo have become had she not been there to criticise the various versions of the plays, and then collect the rewritings, hone, edit and publish them? The dialogue clarifies a collaboration unique in theatre history and allows Franca to tell her own story in her own words. JOSEPH FARRELL is Emeritus Professor of Italian studies at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. His works include A history of Italian theatre (2006) and Dario Fo and Franca Rame: harlequins of the revolution (2001).
