Please join us in congratulating the 2016 Jeanne Ward Foundation Scholarships Awardees, Jay Inman of Nordhoff High School in Ojai and Stephen Evans of Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. During our general meeting, Ellen Rundle will be our guest speaker. Ellen received her BA of Art at the University of California, Berkeley where classes with Peter Voulkos were part of the curriculum. During her junior year, she studied abroad at the University of Padova where she concentrated her studies of Art History and Italian. Ellen has exhibited her work at many galleries in Southern California. Much of her work is exhibited at a gallery in San Fernando, La Galeria Gitana. Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA 91007 Acs Soca Annual Fundraiser To Benefit The Arboretum Foundation And Acs Soca Scholarships & Workshops EVENT DETAILS: Fee: $100 for a 10 x10 booth for the two (2) day event. Two people can share one booth. Please send both applications in the same envelope to be considered as a single entry. If you cannot use a whole booth, please contact Celeste. Awards/ Competition: Best of Show, First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Honorable Mention and Peoples Choice for those who wish to enter one of their pieces in the themed on site competition, Botanical. (15% of proceeds go to the Los Angeles County Arboretum Foundation and an additional 10% of proceeds will cover post cards, mailing and credit card administrative fees.) Judging is in the morning and the prizes announcement is before the afternoon demonstration April 2: Festival hours from 9 am - 4 pm with an hour demonstration by each of our guest artist/judge. w o r k s h o p r e g i s t r a t i o n Earthenware: An In-Depth Exploration of Techniques A One Day Demonstration Workshop with Robert Kibler Saturday, April 22nd from 10 am to 4 pm Citrus College, Ceramics Department Robert Kibler, Professor Emeritus of Art from Glendale Community College will be sharing his techniques in the development of earthenware work. During this workshop, he will be covering these topics: Majolica forming and painting techniques and hard slab construction/ underglaze & overglaze decal techniques. During his tenure at Glendale Community College, Robert Kibler taught ceramics at Glendale Community College since 1976, establishing the department and developing the curriculum for the program. After retiring from full-time teaching in 2008, he continues to teach as an adjunct instructor in the department. His work was featured in both American Craft and Ceramics Monthly and shown extensively in the United States in both solo and group exhibitions at galleries such as the Garth Clark Galleries in New York and Los Angeles, the Elaine Potter Gallery and the Hibbard-McGrath Gallery in San Francisco, the Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego, the Great American Gallery in Atlanta, and the Craft and Folk Arts Museum in Los Angeles. Pieces are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art and in many private collections internationally. Workshop Fees: $100 for ACS SoCA, VCPG and CASD members, $150 for nonmembers, $50 students with proof of current minimum enrollment of 6 units. Disc one is great for beginners. He explains his technique for trimming and handle making as well as what he calls a double volume cup. Disc two is more advanced with demonstrations on mold making concepts and creating complex forms that look simple. He shows his technique for texture to capture the beauty of celadon glazes. Good tips and ideas that could integrate into your style. Hand Building with Color and Texture with Lana Wilson (Number 191) 1 hr 30 Minutes A laidback approach, full of easy, high-success projects. Lana encourages play and experimentation throughout the video. Pit Firing and Burnishing with Sumi Von Dassow (Number 192) 1 hr Sumi von Dassow shares the methods of pit firing and burnishing that she has developed over the course of thirty years. How to prepare pots for firing, what materials and chemicals to use in the firing, and how to load and fire a pit will be covered. Raku Firing Collection (Number 193) - 1 hr Marcia Selsor demonstrates four exciting post-firing techniques for the raku kiln: basic raku, horsehair and feather raku, saggar firing, and obvara. She covers (Number 194) - equipment, safety, and suitable clays and glazes for the process before moving on to the actual firing process. Recipes are included. Understanding Glazes with John Britt 2 disc set 2 hours, 15 minutes John Britt explains various testing methods that will help you get great results quickly. The visual is simple and very easy to follow. Disc two is more advanced, he gets technical on materials, diving into the three basic components of a glaze fluxes, glass formers, and refractories and how various ceramic materials fit into those categories and work together to produce myriad outcomes. With this video, you ll be able to deepen your understanding of glaze chemistry and improve your glazes at your own pace. Contact: pscrabb@cox.net for full itinerary. The Presidents Show We are proud to announce that the Beatrice Wood Center of the Arts Director and their Board extended an invitation to exhibit in 2017. The exhibition dates will be July through August 2017. One piece will be chosen from up to 3 submitted works. The maximum size of the piece should not exceed a combined measurement of 42 (height +- width + length). The gallery will post the image of your entry onto their website if it meets the quality standard. The submission period will open in April and the deadline is in June. If you are unable to submit your entries electronically, please contact Celeste at 818-599-4233 to discuss manual options. Call for Entries The City of Brea Art Gallery and the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California are proud to announce a call to artists for the 4th Clay & Glass Biennial. This national juried exhibition will be held at the Brea Art Gallery, Orange County, California, and will run July 22 through September 15, 2017. The juror is Suzanne Isken, Executive Director of the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles. Up to three artworks may be entered for $30, with an entry deadline of April 9. Mold Workshop with Jim Keville We wished you were here We had one of the best workshops ever!! ACS So CA invaded Cal State Dominguez Hills last October for a plaster/mold making workshop. Jim Keville demystified the techniques, theories and formulas for making plaster for 2 part molds. Consistency is the key!!!
