The skin & horney layer The horney layer The most important physiological function of the horney layer is to serve as a wall of defense against various stimuli such as dryness, ultraviolet rays, and physical and chemical stimulus. The skin Keratinization The skin is made up of the epidermis and the dermis, and the epidermis is divided into the horney layer, the clear or lucid layer, the granular layer and the germina layer. From the stratum basale, the deepest layer of the epidermis, cells move to its uppermost layer while going through the changes from basal cells to echinocytes, then to granular cells, and finally to keratinocytes.
