Sip, Style & Shop Stylist s Profiles Hannah Be RETROSPECT-Vintage Fashion www.retrospect-vintagefashion.com www.hannahbe.com https://www.instagram.com/retrospect_vintage_fashion/ About you? My name is Hannah Be and I am Sacramento s Sustainable Stylist. #HannahBe #RetrospectVintageFashion Why do you thrift? The reason I thrift is to help save your pockets and the earth. I love to thrift because each time I thrift, it is like a treasure hunt! Favorite thrifted item? All of my items are my favorite thrifted items. Everything! If I had to pick, it would be my two vintage Hermes scarves that I found for fifty cents each, at a Flea Market! What do you love about thrifting? The things I love about thrifting is that I always can find something original and one-of-a-kind! I am a signature stylist and thrifting is a way to help keep my styles original but current. I am an eco-stylist so by thrifting we are help saving the environment!. Favorite Goodwill and why?

My favorite Goodwill is Goodwill on Date Road, Sacramento Ca. You can buy clothing by the pound. Perfect for wholesalers! Do you feel like thrifting enhances your style and why? Yes, thrifting enhances my style because I find pieces from the past and bring them back to life. As a sustainable stylist thrifting helps me teach people how to dress fashionable in recycled garments When did you start thrifting? Over 10 years ago What is your favorite season for fashion? Winter is my favorite fashion season to thrift because you have an opportunity to layer up and showcase your style in many ways. I believe in head to toe fashion, winter and fall are the best seasons to achieve a polished and chic look from head to toe. Describe your personal style? My personal style is eclectic, one-of-a-kind, it s signature style. I love everything from color, textures, patterns and bold prints. The bigger the print the better! What is your thrift store strategy? Do you spend a lot of time and go through everything? Do you go for a specific item each trip? How do you stay on track? My thrift store strategy is to take my time and sift through every piece. I don't want to miss anything in between the racks. If you are impatient and don t want to spend the time to look for interesting pieces than thrifting is probably not for you. I stay on track by scheduling times and dates to visit certain stores and I give myself time to look for pieces. Favorite fashion tip? My favorite fashion tip is to wear pieces that reflect your personality! Confidence is your best accessory! How do you avoid buying something that is the wrong size or that you don t need? I always buy sizes up or down. This is great because this gives you an opportunity to upcycle the piece. You can make an oversized shirt into a fitted dress. That s why I love thrifting because you can save the earth through fashion.

Kari Montgomery @kari.montgomery - Small Budget Big Style About me Hi friends, I am Kari Montgomery, a thirty something wife, mom of two, middle school social studies teacher and bargain hunter. You can find me making the most out of life + style on my Instagram blog @kari.montgomery - Small Budget Big Style Why I thrift and love thrifting The better question is why aren t more people thrifting!?! I absolutely love the thrill of a good deal and the treasure hunt aspect of shopping at Goodwill. Not only do I save a ton of money dressing myself and my family from Goodwill, but I m able to find unique items and not get lost in the sea of trends and fads you find shopping retail. I can experiment with different styles and am exposed to lots of different labels and items I most likely wouldn t find in a retail setting. Favorite thrifted item I honestly don t know how I can pick just one, it s like asking which of my kids is my favorite! The thrifted item I wear the most is a perfectly distressed and worn in pair of Joe s Jeans I ve had for years. Over the years I ve scored many high end brands and left many on the racks for others such as - Tory Burch, DVF, Kate Spade, Jimmy Choo and Prada! Favorite Goodwill and Why My favorite Goodwill is the Elk Grove store off of East Stockton Boulevard. I love the friendly, helpful staff, cleanliness and the organization of the store. Do you feel thrifting enhances your style and why? Thrifting has absolutely enhanced my personal style. Through thrifting I have been able to try-on and buy items I most likely would have never even come into contact with shopping retail. Thrifting has helped me look beyond labels and size tags. I ve gained a lot of confidence and learned what cuts and styles work best

with my body type. Thrifting has helped me look for more versatile and classic pieces that are timeless, not trendy. I view style and clothing as an investment and I want to get the most bang for my buck. When did you start thrifting? I thrifted occasionally in high school and college, but became a serious thrifter when I became a mom seven years ago. I have always loved clothes, shoes, accessories and shopping, but realized my new budget that included diapers and childcare was not going to permit me to shop how I had before I had kids. I started thrifting out of necessity and found the experience to be very fun, rewarding and budget friendly. There is something very satisfying knowing you paid a few dollars for something that retails for 10-20x that amount. Favorite Season I love autumn and winter for fashion. Northern California s autumn tends to be warm and short lived, so I combined the two. Cozy layers, sweaters, jackets, scarves and boots are my absolute favorite! Adding a scarf or hat to an outfit can completely change and pull together an entire look. Personal Style This is a hard one. I would describe m style as casual with a dash of minimalist and a bit of glam. I gravitate towards wardrobe staples and neutrals - items I will be able to wear in multiple ways, settings, and seasons. I like to add a bit of bling and sparkle to my outfits and in my opinion leopard is always a neutral! Thrift Store Strategy Tips and How I Avoid buying the wrong size, etc. I keep in the notes on my phone, my thrift wish/needs list to help me stay focused. I will admit it is very easy to get off track or overspend when everything is such a good deal. I tend to bring cash so that I have to stick to my budget. My strategy is to always grab a cart and if you are remotely interested in an item, put it in your cart. I start at the counter with locked items, then go through house wares. I find tons of great decor at Goodwill, then I look at furniture, purses and shoes. Then depending on my time, I go into the racks. My kids are growing and going through clothing so quickly, that I always start in the kids department. If you have children, you need to be thrifting. I then move on to the men s section to look for my husband. When shopping for myself, I tend to focus on one or two racks. I go through every single item. I look at the labels, feel the material and even when thrifting, I check the price tags. Items can be mis-tagged or are donated because the sizing is off. If I like something, I put it in my cart, regardless of the size. I ve learned not to get hung up on brands and labels. We are not defined by the size and price of our clothes. I try on everything and carefully inspect each item before deciding to buy it or return it to the racks. If the item is at all uncomfortable, the fit is off or similar to an item I already own, I put it back. Fashion Tips

Wear what makes you happy. Don t worry about what everyone else is wearing or try to force trends and styles that don t suit you. When you feel good about your appearance, you exude confidence and that goodness trickles into all aspects of your life. I tend to stick to neutrals and add pops of color or interest with my accessories, textures, bags and shoes. I m a big fan of print mixing. It can be a bit daunting at first, but a good starting point is mixing stripes with florals or my favorite stripes or plaid with leopard!

Heather Donaldson www.ladykatherinemusic.com https://www.instagram.com/ladykmusic/ https://thefitandhealthyrn.wordpress.com About you I am a singer/songwriter also known as Lady Katherine. I am also a critical care nurse. I recently relocated to Sacramento after living in LA for 12 years. Northern California is my home. When I m not saving lives, I m world traveling, writing music or thrifting. Why do you thrift When I was living in Los Angeles living the artist s life, I never had any money but needed clothing that would make me look like a star. Goodwill quickly became my best friend. I could find unique items made of rich fabrics that were often hardly worn. Now that my pocketbook is not as tight, I don t thrift out of necessity, I thrift because I worry about this planet and the effects of fast fashion on the environment. I still find beautiful clothes for a fraction of retail prices and I use what I save to travel and enjoy life. Favorite thrifted item? I have this thing for leather jackets with fur collars. But basically any awesome vintage jacket is totally my jam. What do you love about thrifting? I love finding something that was waiting for me on the racks. Something that comes to life when I put on. I love wearing a dress I found for $5 and making it look like a million. Favorite Goodwill? I really dig the L street boutique in Sacramento & the Sunset store at Sunset junction in LA. Do you feel like thrifting enhances your style and why?

Yes! I find that vintage items are well tailored and made of sturdy fabrics. I try to buy classic pieces that won t go out of style. What is your favorite season for fashion? I love winter jackets, hats and boots. I love spring dresses. And I love the freedom of summer. Describe your personal style? Part hipster, part couture, part rockstar and part cozy AF. What is your thrift store strategy? Do you spend a lot of time and go through everything? Do you go for a specific item each trip? How do you stay on track? Sometimes I have a particular item or event I m shopping for. I skim the racks for fabrics and patterns first, I look at the craftsmanship, I look at the size, I pull several items, put them in a cart and then try them on. Sometimes I give myself a time limit, sometimes a just cruise. I always remind myself that I m not obligated to buy anything if I don t find something I absolutely love. Favorite fashion tip? I never buy more hangers. What I have is what I ve got. If I buy something and I don t have any hangers left, I have to get rid of a similar item. I keep a donation bag in my closet and when it s full (or I have several) I recycle my clothes or donate them to Goodwill. This keeps my closet under control and forces me to really think about purchases and my wardrobe in general. How do you avoid buying something that is the wrong size I try everything on. If it doesn t fit, I don t buy it. If it s uncomfortable, I don t buy it. If it s not quite right for any reason at all, I don t buy it.

Kyra Klopp www.instagram.com/chaosofkyra Favorite thrifted item? It varies! So often you find a gem and get really obsessed with it for a few weeks, and then you find a new treasure the next time you go. Some of my favorites include this Penny Lane-esque jacket I picked up at the Haight Street Goodwill, a couple of vintage train cases I use for storage, and a old camera bag I use for my own equipment. The best thing I've found is a $2 Dollar Carole King vinyl of Tapestry. I listen to it all the time. When did you start thrifting? I started shopping at second hand stores fairly early on in High School. Usually we ended up hunting through Goodwill for spirit day clothing. But then it became more about finding things I'd wear regularly. What do you love about thrifting? The surprise element of it all. You truly never know what you'll find when you walk in. Some days it's a total miss, but other times you walk out thinking you've really hit the jackpot. Favorite Goodwill and why? I LOVE the Alhambra location. Do you feel like thrifting enhances your style and why? Oh definitely. It's so fun to wear a piece you've had to dig for. There's a weird sense of fulfillment that comes from someone being like, "Oh my gosh, love that jacket! What is your favorite season for fashion?

Fall! Always. I'm such a massive fan of the fall tones, oversized coats, and scarves. Describe your personal style? I keep my style pretty simple. I tend to lean towards a more neutral color palette, never straying too far from black, white, and denim. But I like to mix things up a bit with a bright lipstick, an interesting coat, or some wild boots. What is your thrift store strategy? Do you spend a lot of time and go through everything? Do you go for a specific item each trip? How do you stay on track? My strategy is to only spend time looking through the colors I know I'll wear. Most thrift store racks are laid out by colors, so I go straight for the ones I know I'll wear most: black, white, gray. But I stay away from colors that would go to waste in my closet. It's unlikely that I'd ever wear an orange shirt, so I don't waste time scrolling though oranges or looking at anything with a bold pattern. Favorite fashion tip? Figure out what types of clothes best suits your personality and you body type, and live in that zone. Knowing what you love to wear makes it so much easier to shop at thrift stores, get ready in the morning, and be confident when you walk out the door. How do you avoid buying something that is the wrong size or that you don t need? I'm 100% that person who has to try everything on before buying it. I don't commit to a shopping trip unless I know I have the time to really make sure I'm trying things on and getting what I need. Anything else you want to add? There's this great Gore Vidal quote, "Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn." While I don't think he was necessarily referring to fashion, it's a pretty great quote to keep in mind when figuring out your own sense of style.

Tuyen https://www.instagram.com/typicaltuyen/ https://www.facebook.com/typicaltuyen/ About you I m currently a college student running a fashion blog called Typical Tuyen. Feel free to follow me on Instagram, like my Facebook page or tune in on my blog from everyday comfy looks to chic and sleek looks! Why do you thrift? I thrift for the experience. Rummaging the aisles, discovering unique clothing, accessories, and styling pieces that fit right into my wardrobe for an inexpensive cost is my kind of shopping. Thrifting is therapeutic for me, it inspires and refreshes my fashion sense. Favorite thrifted item? There are a lot of gems I find, but my favorite thrifted item would have to be my Levi high-waisted mom jeans. They fit perfectly and they are the perfect wash. They are definitely a staple in my wardrobe! What do you love about thrifting? I love thrifting because it is environmentally friendly and it s like going on a treasure hunt. I love that I can take a trip down memory lane and stumble upon clothes from the 70 s to 90 s and designer pieces, if I m lucky! Favorite Goodwill and why? The Goodwill Superstore on Franklin and Florin Shopping center. Not only is the store as neat as can be, but the staff are friendly, which makes it pleasant to shop around. Do you feel like thrifting enhances your style and why? Yes I do! When I m out thrifting, I get so inspired to style different looks. I love that their shelves represent decades of fashion trends to choose from.

When did you start thrifting? I started thrifting thanks to my mom. Thrift shopping is a time for my mom and I to bond. When I was a kid, I thought it was kind of embarrassing, but now I see it in a new light. I didn t know what the term thrifting meant until I got older and realized I did it out of need when I was younger, but now that I m older, I m doing it for fun and I love it. What is your favorite season for fashion? My favorite season for fashion would have to be Fall. Layering is so much fun because there s tons of pieces to choose from whether it s outerwear, accessories, and shoes. I m a sucker for outerwear and boots! Describe your personal style? I ask myself this a lot and to be quite honest, I don t like to box myself into one type of style. Some days, I feel like wearing sneakers and a puffer jacket with a beanie, while other days, I feel like wearing booties and a denim jacket with a baker boy hat. It all depends on my mood. But if I have to describe my personal style, I would say experimental and effortless. What is your thrift store strategy? Do you spend a lot of time and go through everything? Do you go for a specific item each trip? How do you stay on track? I look at the shoes first, outerwear next, then denim/pants section, and finally the shirts. After that, I like searching through the kid s and men s section because you never really know what you might find. When thrifting, I love, love, love, finding vintage denim high-waisted jeans or cool graphic tees! Favorite fashion tip? Make sure to look at every section. Yes, even the men's section because if you like wearing oversized things, you can find the best t-shirts or outerwear. Don't feel intimidated or embarrassed! You can definitely score some gems there. How do you avoid buying something that is the wrong size or that you don t need? Try it on! I highly recommend using the fitting rooms because though there are the tricks like measuring your waist by wrapping a pair of pants around your neck or wearing the clothes on top of your outfit in front of a mirror, it just doesn t do the pieces justice. It can be a hassle, but it s worth avoiding disappointment! To avoid things I don t need, I take a look at my cart before going through the checkout line and analyze the pieces and look at the price tags. If I can t see myself wearing more than the amount I paid for, I don t need it.

Keia Mae www.heirsofthreads.com. https://www.instagram.com/keia.mae/ About You I have been in fashion/visual production for 15 years. My partner and I will launch an online marketplace www.heirsofthreads.com in April 2018. Why do you thrift? To save money and get great clothes that always stand out. Favorite thrifted item? Any kind of fur. What do you love about thrifting? I love finding unique pieces I know no one is going to have. Creating cost efficient modern style looks with good quality at an amazing price is rewarding. Favorite Goodwill and why? I really like the new Goodwill on Alhambra. I haven t walked out empty-handed yet. I always find something every time I go. Do you feel like thrifting enhances your style and why? Oh Yes! It s not hard for me to create and/or put together a look, it s my profession. I love sharing how much my looks cost to prove you don t have to spend a lot to look good. When did you start thrifting? My granny made me a professional thrifter and I ve passed that on to my daughter who s been thrifting since she was in elementary school. What is your favorite season for fashion? Fall/winter of course, I love layers on layers and fur. Describe your personal style?

My style is eclectic; I m retro, edgy, sporty and feminine all at the same time. What is your thrift store strategy? Do you spend a lot of time and go through everything? Do you go for a specific item each trip? How do you stay on track? Working in visual merchandising my strategy is to skim the racks really fast and easy. I stop when something catches my eye. I usually have an idea of what I want but never any commitment to that idea. I just cruise, skim and grab. I m also a wardrobe stylist so it s easy to put looks together. Favorite fashion tip? If you can t make at least 3 looks from each piece you want to buy, don t get it. How do you avoid buying something that is the wrong size or that you don t need? I know what I have and don t have at home so I try to only buy something I don t have. It s only the wrong size if it s too small, I like oversized pieces so it usually works for me. Anything else you want to add? Just because it isn t expensive doesn t mean you need it.
