218 Provide eyelash perming Eyelash perming is a relatively new treatment on offer in the salon and is a popular addition to the suite of eye treatments. You will learn how to carry out a sensitivity test, consult with your client and assess their natural lashes. By carrying out an eyelash perm you will make the lashes appear longer and will dramatically open up the eye area. This unit covers the knowledge of the chemical process of eyelash perming. You will also learn how to recognise contra-indications and how to follow safe working methods. Provide eyelash perming Unit 218 2

Some useful words are explained below Conjunctivitis A bacterial infection where the eyes are red, swollen and sticky. Contra-action An unfavourable reaction that may occur either during or after the treatment, eg skin swelling, excessive erythema. Erythema Redness of the skin caused by the blood vessels bringing blood to the surface. Fixing lotion A chemical, usually sodium bromate, that when applied to the lashes will fix them into their new shape, making the curl permanent. Perm lotion A chemical, usually thioglycolate, that when applied to the lashes will soften and break down the disulphide bonds, allowing the hair to bend into a new shape. Perm rods Cylindrical foam rods that come in various sizes and are used to curl the eyelashes. Sensitivity test A test carried out 24 hours before the treatment to see if the client is allergic to the perming products. Sterilisation The process of destroying all micro-organisms and their spores. Stye A small boil at the base of the eyelash follicle which is red, sore and swollen. Provide eyelash perming Unit 218 4
