EXPRESS YOURSELF STEP 1: CONSULTATION Consultation allows you to gather the insights into the client s hair needs that will be the foundation for creating the perfect look. In turn, clients will gain a better understanding on how to maintain the style they desire, so that it keeps looking great every day. Fine Average Coarse TEXTURE The texture of hair relates to how large each individual hair strand is. It varies greatly from person to person, from very fine to extremely coarse. People with very fine hair need products that don t weigh it down. Low Medium High DENSITY Is the amount of hair a person has. Some people have lots of fine hair, while others may have very large individual hairs but less of them. Some people have wavy or curly hair. Curly or wavy hair often gives the impression that there is more hair than there actually is. Curly hair will need products that provide definition. Normal Dry Damaged CONDITION Hair must be in great condition to get the best results from any haircut. Dry or damaged hair won t show off how great your style is. TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES 10

STYLING TECHNIQUES Knowing what products to use is essential, but no styling job is complete without the assistance of the right tools and equipment. This section provides you with the know-how needed to best take advantage of these tools. FINGER DRYING: To remove excess moisture from the hair before blow-drying, a finger drying technique can be used. Using a fast speed and low heat on the blow-dryer, place the palm of your hand face down on the hair. Rotate your hand so the palm faces upwards while using the blow-dryer to dry. TIP: Once dried, Fiber Up gives texture on shorter layered cuts. DIFFUSER DRYING: To remove excess moisture and create volume. Use fingers or a wide-toothed comb to lift the hair, providing natural volume. At the same time, hold the diffuser close to the roots to give a soft drying action. TIP: Use Shield It from roots to ends for even curl definition when using a diffuser. Drying hair naturally will give bouncy elastic curls. 11

FLAT BRUSH: After removing some moisture, use a large flat brush to keep the hair straight and smooth. Start from the back section first. Once the back is dry, move to the sides and then finally the front. Keep the flat brush straight while drying and also when exiting the hair to avoid adding any movement. TIP: Use Frizz Down when using a flat brush to fight waves and frizz. Finish with Spark Up to smooth the cuticle surface and add shine. ROUND BRUSH: After first removing some moisture, use a round brush (choose the round brush size according to hair length and desired result) to create root lift. Roll the brush down to the roots so it overlaps the base section. Move the brush smoothly from the roots to the mid-lengths creating a C shape in the hair. From the mid-lengths, move to the ends, maintaining the C shape to ensure the ends curl around the brush. TIP: Use Dramatize It when using a round brush to add volume to fine hair. 12

IRONING TECHNIQUES STRAIGHTENING IRON: Ensure the hair is clean and dry before styling. Remove all the tangles with a comb prior to straigtening. Section the hair as wide as the iron plates. Use sectioning clips to keep any unstraightened hair out of the way while you style. Use thin sections to minimize repeated passes with the iron. Press the section between the plates close to the scalp while maintaining a gentle pressure. Move the straightening iron down to the ends, evenly with a moderately fast speed. Don t allow the iron to stay in one place for long periods of time. TIP: Before blow drying apply Frizz Down on damp hair to help fight the frizz. Then use Shield It on dry hair before using a straightening iron. CURLING IRON: Divide the hair into four sections and work one section at a time. Comb the first section thoroughly from roots to ends and hold it in your hands. Place the curling iron in the hair close to the roots. Wrap the hair around the curling iron moving downwards towards the ends. Hold the curling iron firmly in place for a few seconds and then release the clamp. Slide the iron out of the hair. Secure the hair with a sectioning clip to hold the curls in place while you continue with the rest to the hair sections. TIP: For long lasting curls, use Shield It on dry hair before using curling iron. 13

STRAIGHT WAVES Straighten it out with sleek locks for a refined style. 1 Apply Dramatize It on damp hair and distribute evenly throughout the hair. 2 Blow-dry the back and crown areas with a large round brush lifting the hair at the root area to create volume. Unleash your client s inner beach girl and let the waves flow. 1 Create a center parting and apply Shield It. Blow-Dry with a round brush at the bottom section of the head from the crown to the nape, twisting the hair with the brush to create voluminous spiral curls. 2 Once blow-dry is complete, use a curling iron or wand around the front and top area to create loose spiral curls. 3 On the top and fringe areas use a vent brush to create a slight bend at the hair ends and to give direction. 3 Apply Shield It through the mid-lengths and ends. 4 Flat iron the top sections to create a smooth surface then apply Spark Up for an overall brilliant shine. 4 Use your fingers to separate the hair for an untamed look. TIP: After flat ironing, use a blow dryer on low heat but high speed all over the root areas to create texture. TIP: After applying Shield It place your fingers upward from underneath the hair and tousle. This allows the top sections to keep the wave formation longer. 15

BRAID UP-DO Bringing out someone s youthful side? Twirl it up with a cute braided look. 1 On damp hair apply Dramatize It. Blow-dry the hair with a boar bristle brush. 2 Create a side parting and brush hair to the side your braid will sit on. Back-brush the hair in the crown to provide fullness and shape. 3 Divide your hair into three even sections. Take the right section and cross it over the middle section. The right section is now the new middle section. Take the left section and cross it over the middle section. Repeat to the ends. An elegant style for any occasion, lift hair up for a gorgeous look. 1 Apply Dramatize It to the root area and blow dry. Lightly back-comb the roots of the crown and back areas and smooth out the mid-lengths and ends with a soft brush. Pull the hair to the lower back of the head, slightly over-directed to one side. Create a seam in the back with pins. 2 Take the remaining hair and carefully but firmly wrap around one hand. 3 Gently withdraw your hand and hold the rolled hair in place. Secure the roll from inside with pins. 4 Pull sections out to make the braid looser. Finish the look with Design It. 4 Finish by spraying with Extra Lock to hold in place. TIP: Don t brush or comb the 3 hair sections too smoothly when braiding. This will give the braid a more unstructured look. TIP: Using your fingers instead of a brush to smoothen the mid-lengths and ends before pinning the seam makes the hair look more undone and modern. 16
