Festival Information Package DANCEWORKS #1 March 29 th & 30 th, 2018 Please take the time to review all the information in your Festival Information Package as there is a lot to know about the festivals we are attending. The information contained herein refers to the Danceworks #1. Danceworks #1 and Danceworks #2 are sister festivals with Central Alberta Dance Festival. All three festivals are run directly by an Alberta dance instructor Rhonda Heald. Danceworks is celebrating over 35 years of hosting dance festivals in Red Deer, Alberta. This festival prides itself on providing a fun and positive experience for studios, teachers, dancers and parents. We are very excited to be a part of this opportunity this year. Awards Medals will be awarded to all participating dance contestants. Danceworks also presents extra achievement awards for groups are presented for Outstanding (1 st ), Rising Star (2 nd ), Shining Star (3 rd ), X Factor, Adjudicator's Choice, and Choreography Awards. Danceworks believe all dancers need to be encouraged. All performances receive custom designed medals. Danceworks also may presents special awards to Outstanding Routines Performed. These may not necessarily be the highest marks of the Festival, but may be chosen for any reason adjudicator decides, something that gave it that extra touch of Star Quality and made it stand out! Adjudication The adjudicators are very skilled in ensuring that each performance receives a well-rounded critique based on dance curriculum and education.

Location and Directions Danceworks #1 will be held at the Red Deer College Art Centre in Red Deer. The Fine Art Centre is located at 100 College Blvd. Festival Rules and Regulations 1. Arrive at the festival on time. All dancers are required to be at the festival 1.5 hours before their scheduled performance time. This will give us time to warm up, rehearse and ensure we are all present and prepared. 2. Arrive at the theatre ready to go. Dressing rooms can be very crowded so try to have hair and make-up done before you get there. 3. Take care of your costumes. Parents and dancers are responsible for all costume pieces and footwear. Please make sure you don t forget any tights or accessories. Do not eat in your costumes and always try to hang costumes up. 4. Dancers must wear cover-ups at all times. This is to protect your costume, keep you warm and cover up your costume should you be watching in the audience or walking around the theatre. If you have MYD clothing, it s best to wear those to support your studio. 5. All dancers should stay for awards. Show your support and respect by coming to receive your marks and awards. All dancers are encouraged to stay and watch other dances at the festival. This is a great opportunity to see some fantastic dances and get a taste of some different styles and skill levels. 6. Fuel yourself properly. Try to eat healthy foods (proteins and complex carbs like pasta) and drink lots of water during festivals. Avoid sugary food and junk food that will cause you to crash. Remember that you are an athlete and need to eat properly. 7. Be responsible. Your teachers will be very busy at the festivals and will not be able to be with you at all times. Please don t wander. Students should be able to warm up on their own and start going over dances together. 8. The festival has specified the following rules: Backstage: Dancers are only allowed backstage two dances prior to theirs and must clear backstage area immediately after their performance. Sorry, no parents are allowed backstage. No cameras, video cameras or recording devices are allowed in the theatre at any time. Any person ignoring this rule may subject their student/studio to disqualification. Festival organizers take this VERY seriously. Tap Shoes are allowed backstage only, not in hallways or rehearsal areas. Valuables should be left at home as festivals are not responsible for any lost or stolen property.

Behaviour and Attitude 1. All students must act in a professional manner. 2. Poor attitudes or egos will not be tolerated. 3. Do not speak negatively about other dances, dancers, studios, costumes, adjudicators, etc. Please watch what you say at all times, you never know is sitting near you. Parents please be aware of this as well. 4. Treat your parents with respect, even when you are rushed or stressed, remember they are there to help you. 5. Support your fellow dancers. Help each other out and support one another. We are all part of a team and need to work together. *Please remember that festivals should be a fun and positive experience for everyone. All festivals have specified that any dancer acting unsportsmanlike can be disqualified. We want all dancers to enjoy themselves and enjoy all that this experience has to offer. Costume, Hair and Make-up 1. Make-up should all be done the same with the correct colours. Eye makeup should be done in brown tones and lipstick should be a deep plumburgundy. Stage make-up should be much heavier and darker then everyday make-up. Please see attached Hair and Make-up Guidelines for more information. 2. Hair for each dance will be specified in class and is listed on the Hair and Make-up Guidelines page. Make sure your hair is secure. Use ample amounts of hairspray so no bangs or wispies are out. Dancers must look clean and tidy on stage as they are marked on appearance as well. Dancers will be asked to redo their hair if it is not done properly. 3. No nail polish or jewellery is allowed on stage. Be sure to remove any nail polish and take off your watches, rings, etc. 4. Dancers must have appropriate footwear and tights. Please bring extra tights as you can not have any holes or runs in them on stage. 5. Make sure you have appropriate undergarments. Do not wear underwear under your tights/bodysuit. Older dancers please make sure bras are the proper colour and style and are not visible under your costumes.

Hair and Make-up Guidelines Remember, stage make up should be much darker than everyday make up we want our features to stand out on stage under the bright lights. MAKE-UP Please apply your makeup in the following order: FOUNDATION 1. Start with a clean, moisturized face. 2. Apply foundation to the entire face, evening out your skin tone and blending any skin imperfections. Use a foundation that matches your skin tone and be sure to blend down into your neck. 3. Use a loose powder over your foundation so make-up sets and does not appear oily or shiny. Remember you will be doing a lot of dancing (and sweating) and your make-up has to stay on. BLUSH (Color Suggestions: 1. Make a fish face or a big smile to find the proper place to put blush. 2. Brush on the blush fairly heavily along the cheekbone & up toward the hairline. 3. Blend so blush has a natural appearance with no strong outline. EYES (Color Suggestions: 1. Cover the entire eye area (from lashes to eyebrow) with white eyeshadow. It should extend slightly past the outer edge of the eye. 2. Cover the eyelid (from lashes to crease) with a medium shade of brown. 3. Apply dark brown eyeshadow into the crease of your eyelid and extend it outward to a slight triangle shape at the outer edge of your eye. 4. Line the eyelid, on the lash line, from the outer corner to the centre of the eye with a black liner (preferably liquid eyeliner). 5. Line your bottom eyelid, again just under the lash line, extending upward slightly further then the edge of your eye to create a small wing. 6. Apply ample amounts of mascara or fake eyelashes. LIPS (Color Suggestions: 1. Stretch the lips out so they are as flat as possible 2. Carefully apply the lipstick following the natural line of the lip (you may use lip liner as long as it matches your lipstick) 3. Make sure that you get the corners of the mouth and the inner part of the lip. 4. Lipstick should be a deep colour (plum-burgundy). (See notes below) No red or pink. **Please not the color suggestions are just that, suggestions of colors for new parents that may need some guidance. For past parents the colors you have from previous years are fine, unless we have spoken to you about them in the past**
