I like the texture that the roller leaves. You can find these craft rollers at most stores. I found mine at K Mart. Start by rolling Williamsburg Blue for the first coat. Allow to dry. For the second coat, start rolling Williamsburg Blue, and then pick up Blue Chiffon and roll in randomly. Slightly blend these colors into each other, but don t over blend. If you re using a large brush, just follow the same instructions. This background needs to be blended just enough to have some light and dark areas. Add lots of fun Winter Blue snowflakes randomly. You can stencil or freehand them. Spatter Winter Blue and some Warm White randomly also. Sideload a large brush in Blue Chiffon and add some circular design in the area where the snowman will be standing. I wanted this to originally be a skating rink but changed my mind to a garden instead. Float Uniform Blue (thin) in and around this circle for shading. We will add snow to the goodies after they are painted. SNOWMAN: Start dabbing in Warm white. I didn t want a smooth surface on her so dabbing the paint allowed for some of the background to show through and could be some shading. Repeat as often as needed to get a good white coverage. On the last coat, pick up Baby Blue, and begin to form the shading under her head and body. Dab this back and forth into the Warm White and back into the Baby Blue. When you are happy with the shading, then pick up just a little Uniform Blue, and add extra shading under the greenery around her neck area and around her arm area, and between the two body areas on the right side. Float Poodleskirt Pink on her cheeks. Sideload a small brush in Dark Chocolate and float her eyes in. Without cleaning your brush, sideload it in Lamp Black and float over the Dark Chocolate, but not covering it completely. Add a Warm White highlight to each eye. Her nose is Tangelo Orange, shaded Tomato Red. Her arms are Camel, shaded Honey Brown, and then Dark Chocolate in the darkest areas. Add the leaves when you paint the vine and holly around her neck. Use the same greens. 2 artistsclub.com
HOLLY LEAVES: Base coat the light leaf Foliage Green. Shade it with Hauser Medium Green, and highlight with Lemonade. Float Deep Burgundy on the tips. The darker leaf is base coated Hauser Medium Green. Shade Plantation Pine to Black Green. Highlight Foliage Green to Lemonade. Add Deep Burgundy to the tips. Add surrounding stroke leaves using these greens. The berries are Tomato Red, shaded Deep Burgundy. Highlight Boysenberry Pink. Add a Warm White highlight dot to each. The vine around her neck is Dark Chocolate. Add Warm White drop dots randomly. MARSHMALLOW TREE: Base coat the marshmallow Light Buttermilk. Shade first with Toffee, and then Milk Chocolate (thin). The chocolate frosting is base coated Dark Chocolate. Shade Soft Black. Come in just a tiny bit next to the Soft Black, and highlight Deep Blush. Add some extra Warm White highlights on top of this. The candy cane trunk is base coated Warm White with Tomato Red bands, and linework. Float Uniform Blue (thin) for shading down the left side. GINGERBREAD CANDY CANE: Start at the top of the cane painting Camel. As you get to the center area, begin picking up Warm White. Soften these colors together, and then continue on to the bottom with just Warm White. Repeat for a good coverage. Float Honey Brown on each side of the Camel area. The eyes are floated in first with Dark Chocolate. Without cleaning your brush, pick up Lamp Black, and float over the Dark Chocolate but not covering it completely. Add a Warm White highlight dot to each eye. Float the cheeks and lower lip in with a mix of Tomato Red plus a small amount of Camel. The nose is this color also. Shade the nose with Tomato Red. The smile line is Tomato Red. Strengthen the cheek color close to her smile line using just Tomato Red. Add a highlight dot to her nose. The band and linework on the lower candy cane area are Tomato Red. Float Uniform Blue (thin) for shading this area. Float Deep Burgundy over the broad red band. Add Warm White line work to highlight. The cream on top of the candy cane is Warm White, shaded Winter Blue. The cherry is Tomato Red, shaded Deep Burgundy. Highlight the cherry with Boysenberry Pink, and add a Warm White highlight dot. RED AND WHITE CANDY CANES: Base coat Warm White. The bands and linework are Tomato Red. Float Uniform Blue down one side for shading. Add extra Deep Burgundy shading to the broad red bands. The highlight line is Warm White. artistsclub.com 3
FACES: Float Dark Chocolate to set in the eyes. Without cleaning your brush, pick up Lamp Black and float over the Dark Chocolate without covering it completely. Add a Warm White highlight dot to each eye. The nose is Poodleskirt Pink, shaded Boysenberry Pink. Add a Warm White highlight dot. Float the cheeks and lower lip in with Poodleskirt Pink. The smile line is Tomato Red. Strengthen the cheek color next to the smile with Boysenberry Pink. The chocolate topping on one of the canes is painted following the same instructions as for the marshmallow tree. ROUND CANDIES: Base coat the outer area Tomato Red. Highlight the center front Boysenberry Pink. Float Deep Burgundy on the outer edges. Base coat the center of the candy Warm White. Repeat as needed. Float Winter Blue on one side for shading and Toffee on the other side for shading. The little star is Hauser Medium Green. The others have vines and leaves coming out of the center. BERRIES: Base coat Tomato Red. Shade Deep Burgundy to Antique Maroon. Highlight Boysenberry Pink. Add a Warm White highlight dot to each. VINES AND GREENS: The vine is Dark Chocolate. Add stroke leaves using all of the greens that are used on the holly design around her neck. SNOW: Load a brush in Winter Blue. Sideload it in Warm White and scuff in and around the snowman, the candies, vine, and berries. Add some extra around in between the snowman and candies. For some extra snow, I picked up Warm White on the edge of my palette knife and kind of scraped it in some areas to resemble extra splotchy snow falling. FINISH: Dry brush extra Warm White coming in from the edge of the surface. Not a lot, just enough to lighten the color. Spray varnish several times, allowing to dry in between sprays. 4 artistsclub.com
