FOOTWEAR FRIENDS NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2018 WELCOME TO OUR AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2018 TO KEEP YOU INFORMED OF WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH YOUR CHARITY, FOOTWEAR FRIENDS! International Golf Championship of the Shoe, Leather and Allied Trades The 73rd International Golf Championship of the Shoe, Leather and Allied Trades was played over the Hillside and Southport over three days at the end of June. The sun shone throughout the three days but a challenging wind and the large number of bunkers made low scoring difficult with both courses presenting a real challenge to the 91 golfers. It was great to see so many familiar faces at the banquet where more than 8,000 was raised from a very successful Derby Draw, Raffle and Auction with thanks due to Ivor Tilley for organising the auction items and Ian Ferris for obtaining the many excellent raffle prizes. Over the 73 years the event has been held more than 500,000 has been donated to the two main trade charities, Footwear Friends and LHTBI, the leather industry charity, who thank the Committee, Sponsors and all the players for their generous support. The 2019 Championship will be held at Carden Park in Cheshire from June 12th to 14th. Finally a big thank you to the secretary of the Championship Committee, Rodney Gibson, who works tirelessly to ensure the success of this enjoyable event. Footwear Industry Awards This year s Footwear Industry Awards Dinner was held on the evening of the 18 th February at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham. This annual event takes place at the same time as the MODA Fashion and Footwear exhibition and as usual was well supported by companies, brands and key figures across the UK footwear industry who once again took an all infrequent chance to get together to socialise and network at this prestigious event. Northamptonshire Footwear Manufacturers Dinner 2018 On 3rd May 2018, the Northamptonshire Footwear Manufacturers Dinner was held at the Marriott Hotel in Northampton, hosted by Barker Shoes. The guest speaker on the night was Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive at the Northampton and Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce. This key sector in our industry continues to flourish and the positive atmosphere and friendship that is typical of the industry was evident throughout the evening. This year we welcomed 87 guests from Northamptonshire companies Airwair, NPS, Sanders & Sanders, Trickers, Church, Crockett and Jones, Grenson, Cheaney, Loake, Springline, The British Footwear Association and hosts Barker Shoes. Vital funds were raised for the charity through a charity game of Black and Red and we are extremely grateful for the support by the Footwear Industry Awards and everyone who participated. We look forward to the 2019 Annual Dinner hosted by the BFA in celebration of their 120th Anniversary.

We are very fortunate to have the support of two very long established livery companies, namely The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers (www.cordwainers.org) and The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers (www.pattenmakers.co.uk ) Footwear Friends are very grateful for their continued and substantial support of the charity. MARK JEFFERY GREAT NORTH RUN Following a group warm up before the start with about 50,000 other runners, the gun went off at 10.40 am with the eventual race winner Sir Mo Farah leading the way. The start of the Great North Run follows the A167 out of Newcastle City Centre gently downhill and over the famous Tyne Bridge. It s very easy to set off too fast and that s exactly what I did. The atmosphere generated by the fantastic Geordie crowds lining the route and a Red Arrows fly by just after crossing over the Tyne seemed to go straight to my legs. At one point early in the race I glanced at my watch and realised I was running at 4.30/km pace which, if maintained, would get me to the finish in 1 hour 31, a totally unrealistic target! Around mile 9 the hamstring niggle sustained in training flared up with a vengeance and I had no choice but to slow down to a gentle jog. Without the encouragement of the spectators or the iced lollies on offer it would have been easy to pull over and give up. The last 4 miles were tough however on cresting the final hill and viewing the sea front at South Shields I somehow managed to find some energy reserves. Ignoring my hamstring, I increased my pace and managed a sprint finish for the final 200 metres. On reflection, whilst I am not happy with my finish time of 2.08, I had a great day and would enter the event again. Note to self start slower next time. INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISERS Our thanks go to the Individuals who are or have been involved in the footwear trade and who take the initiative to raise funds for the charity. We would welcome any fundraising initiatives by supporters. If you would like to take up your own personal challenge in aid of Footwear Friends, please visit our website www.footwearfriends.org.uk to download our fundraising pack for ideas and information. If fundraising is not for you then you may wish to make a donation to Footwear Friends, you can do this by cheque or via our website. Please be assured that all of your contribution, whether in sponsorship or donation will be used directrly to assist those who are struggling to make ends meet. Your donations are crucial to our continue ability to operate as fully as we do. LEICESTER RACE DAY On the 4th June we held our Annual General Meeting at Leicester Race Course followed by an afternoon of horse racing. We were joined by 35 supporters who enjoyed a summer buffet lunch, the thrill of the races and the chance of winning some great prizes on the raffle. We were blessed with good weather and all together we raised in excess of 700 for Footwear Friends, which will be greatly appreciated by our beneficiaries. We would like to thank all those who attended and to Leicester Race Course for their support.

DR. MARTENS FUNDRAISER Dr. Martens held a closed sale for Staff and Friends back in April to turn their end of line stock and unused samples into donations they could give to their chosen charities. Members of the Wollaston Factory Team pitched in with forklifts and trolleys in the car park and unload 15 pallets of merchandise. While Dr. Martens staff from all over the UK volunteered to work the event. Their target was to raise enough funds to reach the target they set for a donation after costs and VAT were paid. Starting at 6 am in far from summery conditions they laid out the products and had a queue right up the high street by 7 am. Even the Staff who spend their working lives surrounded by the product and their families and friends know a bargain when they see one. The tent was full from 1 hour before the advertised opening time and for the rest of the sale. 10 a pair for boots or shoes and a broad range of T-Shirts, bags and accessories flew out of the tent by the arm load. Almost all the product was exchanged for donations and the target was hit by midday. After a cleanup operation and a trip to the bank it was calculated that the team had raised enough to pay for the marquee, the team s breakfast and pay the tax man his cut of the takings. Dr. Martens Culture Team were delighted to present Footwear Friends with a cheque for 10,000 in the days after the sale.

We are happy to welcome three new members to the Executive Committee. Mark Jeffery of Jeffery-West and Julian Yorke of Clarks International have joined the Executive Committee in January and June respectively, as Trustees of the Charity. John Saunders of the British Footwear Association became a co-opted member of the Committee in June. We are looking forward to working with Mark, Julian and John. Two of our long standing Trustees retired from the Executive Committee in June of this year. Paul Spencer had been a member of the Committee since 2013 and represented Clarks International on the Committee during this time. Richard Kottler joined the charity s Committee as a Trustee in February 1997 as a representative of the Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers and the British Footwear Association. During his time on the Executive Committee Richard held the role of President from 2010 to 2014 and, until 2014 also organised the Annual Awards event and also sat on the judging panel for the Awards competition. Our thanks go to both Paul and Richard for their tireless work on behalf of Footwear Friends for many years. We wish them well in their future endeavours.

ANNUAL AWARDS 2017 Wednesday, October 18 th was the night that the Footwear Industry celebrated a new generation of emerging talent. Both the leaders of the industry and a veritable host of new talented designers of developing brands celebrated at the LICC, St. Peter s Church in Central London. The annual event, now firmly implanted in the industry s calendar, was not only to celebrate the awards but also an opportunity to raise funds for Footwear Friends, the industry charity. The Footwear Friends Annual Awards are now in their 11 th year and in that time have been recognised by the trade as an important way of spotting and rewarding British talent in the Footwear Industry. The 120 guests who gathered at the event were addressed by the key note speaker, Peter Youell, Managing Director of Skechers UK & Ireland. The winners in the various categories are: The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers Award for Innovation Bethany Jarroussie of Bimble Shoes was awarded a 5,000 bursary aimed at developing a Young Designer s business. The Award is generously sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers and includes a 12-months mentoring programme by industry experts. The Master, Patrick Peal, presented this year s Award. The Micro-Pak Ltd. Award This year s award went to Shoes by Shaherazad. The award of 2,500 is designed to assist the development of exceptional British talent and also includes a 12-months mentoring programme. The Award was donated by Micro-Pak Ltd. and was presented to Shaherazad Umbreen by Ben Wright. The Joe Meltzer Travel Award The Award of 1,000 was presented by Mark Jeffery to Al King of Kings of Somerset and is primarily to assist candidates in attending key trade shows and researching materials and trends. Donated by Philip Meltzer in memory of his late father, Joe Meltzer. Again this Award includes a mentoring programme. The BFA New Exporters Award The Award for 2017 went to Julian Hakes of Oscar & Hamish. The winner of this award will receive guidance, mentoring and funding support to help him exhibit at a key international trade show and was presented by John Saunders. The Colvanbridge Ltd. Award for Travel Charlotte Mills was presented with the Award by John Cass of Colvanbridge Ltd. This Award of 500 is aimed to assist with the cost of travelling to trade shows and exhibitions. The Society of Shoefitters Award The Award consists of a footwear and shoefitting course run by the Society of Shoe Fitters, worth 500 and was presented to the Winner Danielle Wathes of Percy Stride by Laura West. Again this year has seen an increase in applicants, and the judges were impressed by the great response by candidates for the competition who all put a great deal of work into their business plans and presentations. Sadly there is only room for six winners of the awards, but there is no doubt in the quality of our homegrown talent. Footwear Friends are grateful to the event sponsors without whom the evening would not be possible: Clarks International, Colvanbridge Ltd., Dune, Pavers Ltd, Pentland Brands, Schuh Ltd., Start-rite Shoes Ltd., The University of Northampton and the William Lamb Group and we are delighted that so many people attended the event and by doing so supported the trade s unique charity. How the Award Funds were used: It is always great to hear from our Awards winners and their achievements in the months after they have received their awards, Winner of the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers Award for Innovation, Bethany Jarrousie wrote: The Award gave Bimble a boost in two different but important ways. The first boost was to morale, it s a long tough slog trying to build something new and sometimes you wonder if you re doing the right thing. To be judged by respected members of the industry and recognised in this way provided a huge boost, and really helped give us the courage to continue. The financial award came at a crucial time, our funds were running low and we had no budget to invest in marketing in the run up to Christmas. We used the financial award carefully and split it into two pots. The first pot was allocated to digital marketing campaigns, we tested a number of different digital channels and fine-tuned our campaigns in the run up to Christmas, resulting in a 100% increase in sales during the period compared to the previous year. The other small pot was allocated to product development, and has funded a trip to Portugal to work with a factory who will be producing a new line of Bimbles which we hope to launch in the Autumn. We are grateful for the support we received from Footwear Friends and the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers! Shaherazad Umbreen, winner of the Micro- Pak Ltd. Award wrote: Shoes by Shaherazad received mentorship by Ben Wright of Micro-Pak Ltd. and John Saunders of the BFA. A detailed report was received on how the funds were used. Shoes by Shaherazad was fortunate to win the 2,500 prize from Micro-Pak Ltd. at the October 2017 Award Ceremony. In the Award panel interview, it was proposed that the company would use the funds to further develop the product range in order to increase sales in both the UK and abroad.in December 2017 the company s manufacturer declared that it may be ending UK production but that it would likely be keeping a small UK workshop from which it could fulfil Shaherazad s orders. Sadly in January 2018 the manufacturer confirmed that UK production could not be sustained and would be moving its manufacturing base to India. Therefore, the need to focus on product development and a key core line supplier became even greater.the company s highlights for 2018 so far included a growth in sales. The company also won Exporter of the Year at the National SME Awards. A new line of product was designed to diversify the range. Shoes by Shaherazad also explored the UK and Europe for a new key manufacturer and commenced sampling with a Spanish factory.

ANNUAL AWARDS 2018 This year s Annual Awards presentations are due to be held at the Canal Museum near Kings Cross in London on the 18 th October. These prestigious Awards, sponsored by key organisations in the footwear sector, is to celebrate young emerging talent who are looking to set up or have successfully set up their own businesses. This year s guest speaker is the winner of the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers Award for Innovation 2016, Claire Burrows of Air & Grace. We would very much like to welcome you to this event, where you will have a chance to see the amazing collections from some of the applicants and be inspired to see the winners receive their prizes. The event is also an opportunity to network with people from the industry and to meet old friends. All proceeds will go to helping people who have given so much of their working lives to our industry. Please convey my thanks and good wishes to the donors and fundraiser who have made the grant possible. HOW WE HELP Footwear Friends continues to assist people from all sectors of the industry, be it manufacturing, retail, repair and apparel trades. We are as relevant today as we were many years ago and continue to receive many requests for help, either through other organisations or directly from the applicant. In order to ensure that we assist those from the trade, employment checks are made with HMRC. If you would like to find out more about the work of Footwear Friends why not contact us on info@footwearfriends.org.uk? Our purpose is to distribute our funds to those in need within the industry and we want to ensure we are contacting as many people as possible who may need our help. We would like to call on your help in spreading the news about Footwear Friends, to colleagues, current and past and friends with an association with the trade. Only through awareness can we achieve our goal of supporting people in need. Often a simple pointer to our website is sufficient for those still in employment, or maybe a helping hand for those without easy access to a computer will allow them to avail of our services. This year we have targeted ourselves to increase awareness of the charity to more of our colleagues and to increase our giving in both regular and one off grants. This in turn means we are challenging ourselves to increase our funds, but we believe increased awareness will make this happen automatically. Donating to Footwear Friends is easy, you can either send a cheque to the charity s registered address, or online via the charity s website www.footwearfriends.org.uk Small donations can now also be made via text message We are always delighted to hear of ideas or initiatives to both distribute and raise funds so that all our footwear friends know about Footwear Friends, so please do keep in touch.
