Term 1 - Week 9 25th March 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Friends Today we celebrate the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. The Annunciation has been an important feast day in the calendar of the Church for a very long time. Annunciation is a synonym for announcement, and refers to the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Mary concerning her role in the birth of Christ. The traditional date of the Annunciation is March 25th, which signifies the conception of Christ, occurring as it does exactly 9 months before the date of Christmas when we celebrate Christ's birth. Tomorrow we will participate in Purple Day in support of the Epilepsy Foundation. Students can join in the fun by wearing a purple item or accessory and by bringing a gold coin donation. With Epilepsy touching the lives of students and families of our school this is a great awareness day. Good luck wishes to our SJC Swimming representatives, Jake Bowditch, Bradley Stewart, Robert Stuckey, Macaylee Weber, Baileigh Honeysett, Brooke Smith and Mia Noll who will travel to Sydney to compete at the Polding Swimming trials at Homebush on Friday. We are very proud of your achievements and this experience will be a fantastic opportunity. Have a wonderful week at St Joseph s! HEAD LICE Please Check Your Child s Hair THE FACTS; Head lice infestations are a common occurrence, particularly in primary schools. about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is TREATMENT daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice and eggs (nits) TIPS FOR PARENTS IN REDUCING THE SPREAD OF HEAD LICE As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence. regularly check your children's hair teach older children to check their own hair tie back and braid long hair keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family members to use it when they wash their hair. WHAT S THE COMB AND CONSITIONER METHOD Head lice breathe through small openings along their abdomens called spiracles. By coating the hair with something thick and slimy causes these openings to close over and shuts down the louse s breathing. A simple hair conditioner is recommended for this purpose. NITBUSTING AT HOME 1. Try sitting the child between your legs on a low stool and play a video for kid s entertainment for an hour while you work. 2. Wrap a towel or kitchen paper around the child's shoulders to catch conditioner spill. 3. Remove any scrunchies, ribbons clasps, etc. from the child's head and comb out plaits and braids. 4. Apply liberal amounts of conditioner to the scalp and massage it through all the hair shafts. Every hair has to be coated to ensure it reaches the lice. 5. Lice live close to the scalp, so make sure that you cover the hair shaft close to the scalp. You don't have to work the conditioner onto the whole length of the hair. Combing will spread it well enough. The idea of the application is to restrict the movement of the head lice long enough for you to catch them with a comb. 6. After you've applied the conditioner, use a large comb to part small sections of the hair starting from the nape and working upwards toward the crown. Eggs are often found behind the ears and toward the back of the head. By using this method, you are more likely to find the head lice on top of and toward the front of the head. 7. When the hair is detangled and manageable, use a fine lice comb to comb out each section several times. 8. After each comb out, wipe the conditioner on the paper towel. If the child has head lice, you will see them on the towel. 9. Keep combing each section of hair until no further lice, nymphs or eggs appear on the paper towel. Often you will see lots of old egg casings that may take awhile to remove. Page 4 of 6
