DID YOU KNOW YOUR SKIN IS SIMILAR TO A CAKE? Like your skin, a cake is made up of layers Let s use a two layer cake as an example: two layers of cake below and icing on top. The icing is the equivalent of the skin we show to the world - it s how we judge whether a cake looks good enough to eat, and it s how we show whether we re young, old, sun worshippers, sun avoiders, smokers, non-smokers and whether we take care of our skin or not. If the centre or bottom layers are buckled, crumbling, or cracked, so is the icing. The bottom layer must be strong, sound, and well made to support the middle layer, which in turn, supports the icing. Our skin is made up of layers 2
DID YOU KNOW SKIN, LIKE A CAKE, IS MADE UP OF TWO IMPORTANT LAYERS Skin is a protective shield for your body It regulates temperature, protects internal organs, and acts as a barrier against the environment. There are two important layers: EPIDERMIS The top layer of the skin, where visible signs of ageing appear. It s made of 4 smaller layers. DERMIS The middle layer of the skin that produces collagen and elastin. It s composed of 2 layers. The DERMIS is where ageing begins The EPIDERMIS is where ageing becomes visible 3
As we age our skin changes. Skin is exposed to a number of factors that can accelerate the ageing process or make skin look older than it is. Internal factors are at work such as genetics and changes that naturally occur in everyone s skin over time - we don t have much control over that. What we do have control over are external factors that can accelerate ageing - such as environment, sun and lifestyle. 4
We all know that time spent in the sun exposes us to harmful UV rays. This exposure causes damage to skin s critical support and structural components. When this happens, wrinkles and dark spots begin to form. Over time, this can progress into deeper wrinkles, dark age spots and even sagging. An unhealthy lifestyle, including smoking, drinking alcohol excessively, and an unhealthy diet can show up on skin as signs of ageing. 5
WHAT CAUSES SKIN TO AGE? The Sun Smoking Ageing specifically caused by UV rays is called photoaging. Sun exposure dries skin, thickens the epidermis and slows down cell renewal, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles and uneven tone. Avoid the sun when possible and wear sunscreen daily. Smoking deprives skin of nutrients and oxygen. Leaving it looking dull and lifeless. Smoking also causes harmful free radicals, which weaken collagen and elasticity, accelerating the ageing process. Stress and Lack of Sleep Stress and lack of sleep can lead to dryness, sensitivity, acne, excess oil, or lacklustre skin. Getting enough restorative sleep is vital to give your skin time to repair and rejuvenate. 6
Facial Pollution Expressions Pollutants in the air coat skin with grime that can block pores. Free radicals can break down skin s structure, leading to wrinkles, roughness, dehydration and loss of elasticity. The 15,000 facial expressions you make every day can damage skin. Frowning, smiling, squinting - the consistent movement of facial muscles causes skin fibres to slacken. Over time, these creases become wrinkles. Everyday Diet Sleep Positions Fast food, sugar and empty calories can wreck your waistline and your skin. The more nutrient dense your diet is, the healthier your skin will be. Eat foods rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants. The way you sleep can increase the appearance of wrinkles. Side sleeping can cause lines on your chin and cheeks. Sleeping face down can create lines on your forehead. Sleeping on your back is the best way to prevent lines. Our lifestyle and every day activities can cause skin ageing 7
HOW DO THESE FACTORS IMPACT ON COLLAGEN AND WHY IT MATTERS WHAT IS COLLAGEN? HOW DOES COLLAGEN LINKS TO AGEING? Collagen is a protein found in the skin that gives it strength, support, and flexibility. The breakdown of collagen is one of the primary factors in ageing. Collagen and elastin work together to provide elasticity and support in the skin 8
WHAT IS ELASTIN AND WHY IT MATTERS Elastin is a protein that coils and recoils like a spring and accounts for the elasticity of the skin. Elastin Fiber staining in young skin shows abundant, coils of elastin Elastin Fiber staining in older skin shows broken and damaged coils. Elastin becomes damaged with age 9
ELASTIN AND COLLAGEN Elastin and collagen work together in the skin: Collagen provides support Elastin provides elasticity It s critical to protect your collagen and elastin to retain young-looking skin 10

WHY DO WE HAVE ROUTINES & REGIMES? Our everyday routines There are some things we do every day and we don t think twice about. We brush our teeth and follow with floss. We wash our hair, then style it. Many of us even follow the same pattern getting dressed: trousers first, then shirt, then shoes. But why do we create and follow these routines in our life? Because they get us the RESULTS we want. Brushing gives us healthy teeth; styling our hair makes us presentable to the world; and getting dressed is a better alternative than going to work in your pajamas. Routines/regimes bring results 18
