ABOUT YOUNG TALENTS 2018 We are pleased to announce the 10th edition of the Affordable Art Fair Brussels, featuring the Young Talents programme 2018, curated by La peau de l ours (LPDO), a community of art influencers. If you are a young or emerging Belgian artist, apply before 1 December 2017 to be in with a chance to display your work to more than 17.600 art lovers, collectors and critics, art press, and over 96 national and international galleries at the wonderful Tour & Taxis exhibition centre. 6 SELECTED ARTISTS 1 AWARD WINNER * Voted for by fair visitors. 5 DAY EXHIBITION The annual Young Talents programme is designed to showcase and support the work of young contemporary artists, or those just starting their artistic careers. Supported by the Affordable Art Fair Brussels, and curated by LPDO, the programme is open to Belgian citizens or residents, aged between 18 40. The philosophy behind the programme is to contribute to young artists creative careers by providing a spotlight on the most promising upcoming talent. The programme aims to highlight and reflect the practices and challenges that young and emerging artists face in the art industry today. By supporting and encouraging young talent, we facilitate new opportunities to help them to progress in the world of art in order to reach their full potential. Judging is carried out by a professional Selection Committee; Thomas Ghaye and Laurie Mélotte, founders of LPDO, Stéphane Roy, curator and art director for galleries, institutions and exhibitions, and led by Géraldine Hubot, Fair Director, and Louise Malfait, Fair Manager of Affordable Art Fair Brussels, which has championed young and emerging creative talent for many years. Together the Committee will select a shortlist of six artists who will be invited to exhibit their work in the Young Talents section of the Affordable Art Fair Brussels. During the five-day fair, the Affordable Art Fair will act as a gallery for the shortlisted artists, providing them with a booth and the unique experience of exhibiting their work at an international art hub. In addition to exposure to 17.600 visiting art lovers looking to make their next art purchase, all fair visitors will be able to vote for the young artist that they think should win the Young Talents Award 2018. Throughout the fair there will be networking opportunities with leading art professionals; curators, art critics, gallery owners, collectors, art bloggers and more. LA PEAU DE L OURS A COMMUNITY OF ART INFLUENCERS La peau de l ours is a sales platform dedicated to contemporary art. A community shaped by a network of art influencers, the curatorial selection of La peau de l ours is defined by curators, collectors, commissioners and gallery owners. FOR NEW COLLECTORS AND PROMISING ARTISTS La peau de l ours promotes promising artists and acclaimed talents. The community handles artist communication and provides a spotlight on projects through the website and social networks. Supporting artists through temporary exhibitions, La peau de l ours introduces them to the public and key players in the art world. La peau de l ours is the ideal partner to curate the Young Talents section of the 2018 Affordable Art Fair, sharing key values around: showcasing artists curated by key players in the art world artwork pricing a focus on communication and visibility for artists cultivating emerging talents and the new collectors community La peau de l ours will shortlist artwork in a variety of mediums from artists that meet the application criteria. These artworks will be exhibited on lapeaudelours.net. Support for each shortlisted artist will continue after the fair with a personalised page on the website, drawing on the community s experience in content marketing and artwork sales. WHO CAN APPLY? If you are a young artist seeking to gain international recognition, this programme is for you! We are looking for original contemporary visual artworks (including photography, sculpture, collage, modelling, painting, prints, installations, digitally-generated artwork and video) by the best young and emerging talents in Belgium. To be eligible to apply, you must: be aged between 18 and 40 live in or be from Belgium not be represented by a gallery either in Belgium or abroad HOW TO APPLY? All completed application forms received by 1 December will be entered into the selection process Applications must be accompanied by photographs of at least six original contemporary artworks to be considered The Selection Committee will announce a shortlist of six lucky artists in mid-january 2018 The work of the shortlisted artists will be exhibited in the Young Talents section of the exhibition and potentially sold to one of the 17.600 visitors that will attend the Affordable Art Fair Brussels 2018 The artist who receives the most visitor votes during the fair will be given the Young Talents Award 2018 on Sunday 18 March WHEN TO APPLY? ARTWORK AND IMAGES REQUIREMENTS 1. You must submit at least six artworks with your application. 2. For each artwork please use the form below to provide the following details: title, technique, support, dimensions, price and year created. 3. Please provide two images of each artwork (one close-up and one of the artwork hanging / standing). The images must be high resolution JPG files (300DPI) and all files should follow this name format: artist name_ artwork title _01.JPG. 4. For video artworks please submit an extract of the full work no longer than three minutes, or a short presentation. 5. TERMS AND CONDITIONS Please accept these terms and conditions by signing the next page. You can either date and sign this form digitally, or you can print and sign by hand, then scan in the pages to email to us with your application. REGULATIONS 1. To apply for the programme you must be aged between 18 and 40. 2. The programme is only open to Belgian artists and official Belgian residents. 3. Applications must be submitted before midnight on 1 December 2017. 4. Applications must be emailed to: eventbrussels@affordableartfair.com. 5. Applicants must not be represented by a gallery either in Belgium or abroad. 6. All artworks that you submit in your application to be displayed at the Affordable Art Fair Brussels must be priced 6,000 (incl. VAT) or under. 7. At least four of the six artworks that you submit should be priced under 5,000 (incl. VAT). 8. All artworks submitted in your application to be displayed at the Affordable Art Fair Brussels must be original, created by the artist named in your application and meet the criteria below. ARTWORK PERMITTED ARTWORK NOT PERMITTED PRINTS SCULPTURE PHOTOGRAPHY DIGITALLY GENERATED ARTWORK Original paintings, collages, models and installations Prints created by hand by the artist (i.e. etching, screenprint, monoprint, drypoint, lithographs, mezzotint). Prints made with the artist s close involvement and overseeing of the printing process; the artist would usually have made the plates. Print editions no larger than 200. One-off pieces or sculpture editions no larger than 25. Original fine art photography prints with high quality controlled print process, usually overseen and authenticated by the photographer and in most cases signed and with strictly limited editions. Photography editions no larger than 150. Any artwork created digitally will be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the artistic merit of the work itself, the quality of the production method and the edition size. Video art editions no larger than 10. Offset lithographs. Prints run off a commercial printing press using a transparency of an original work, even if signed and dated by the artist, typically in editions of 200 or more. Giclées, although they will be permitted if the original work is created by computer (i.e. digital art) or it was the artist s original intended medium. Sculpture that is commercial and mass-produced, with editions of more than 25 pieces. Photography that is commercial and massproduced. Colour reproductions of original works are not allowed. The Selection Committee will review all completed applications received before the deadline. They will select a shortlist of six artists who will be invited to exhibit their submitted artwork at the Affordable Art Fair Brussels 2018. 9. The Selection Committee s decision is final and will be communicated via email and social media to the shortlisted artists. Those not lucky enough to be selected will be informed by email. We will contact the six shortlisted artists the following week to answer any questions and discuss next steps. 10. The Affordable Art Fair Brussels will show and potentially sell the works of the shortlisted artists at the price agreed. We will act as a gallery for the shortlisted artists during the five days of the fair and as set out in the Consignment Appendix. 11. 50% of any artwork sales will be deducted by the Affordable Art Fair Brussels to cover the cost of logistics, installation and the organisation of the annual Young Talents programme. 12. Artworks must be delivered to the venue on Wednesday 14 March 2018. 13. The curator of the Young Talents section will hang all artworks some assistance may be required from the shortlisted artists. 14.
