april 2019 #issue 3 Editors Note KOFFEE, without intending to or even realising has emerged as the front runner of new age dancehall and reggae music. Whilst there are other candidates such as Protégé who she admits as had major influences on her career, with a steady string of hits Koffee is now leading the pack new age roots, rock chant like reggae music which also consists of artistes such as Jesse Royal, Meleku and a few others. Such as her impact been that back in 2016 shortly after she posted her tribute song Legend for Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt on her Instagram, her following increased tenfold from next to nothing to 400,000 at the minute which is more than any artiste of the same calibre including those I mentioned. Her rise has been steady and with the exception of Chronixx one of her mentors, she is simply the hottest commercial music export from Jamaica. Mikayla Simpson, affectionately known as Koffee was born on February 16th, 2000 in Spanish Town, the old capital of Jamaica. Raised by her mother she attended Ardenne High School where she graduated in 2017. Not associated to any known musical family linage her love for music seems to sprung from obscurity. She taught herself to play the guitar at age 12 and started writing lyrics within the same time. The results of this teenager s positive meditations are now inspirational songs being heard the world over. Still only 19 Koffee has been on tour with Cocoa Tea and Chronixx to numerous countries around Europe and the world and have rocked audiences in some of the biggest reggae festivals outside of Jamaica. The music business often quickly squash dreams of young talent and dishes out rude awakenings to those unprepared, especially females. However, be it through the guidance she has received or not Koffee has proven to be the anomaly within such a male dominated environment and I m convinced that throughout her career she will have multiple parleys with major honours and awards. I have chosen Koffee as our front cover feature for April s issues of Dehyah Magazine simply because even this early in her career she embodies the concept of triumph. 5.

It s an events App that finds raves for people. You download and register, tell the App the type of music you d like to hear, the app then search the locality for DJs playing such genres and tell you the events and locations. So DJ s also register and obviously create a playlist? Correct, they upload 10/15 type of songs they play and the system does the rest. So, people log into the system, type in Buju Banton s Walk like a champion, and all DJ that are playing that kind of music pop up. Yes, if that particular song or similar type of music is being played in that locality then Google map will tell you where to find them. What made you come up with that? Five years ago David and me who are heavily into old school hip-hop turn up at an event only to realise we got the dates mixed. There we were in Camden trying to find out what else was on however the information online was outdated and our friends couldn t help either. We thought to ourselves we couldn t be the only ones that have had this problem. So we started investigating and looking into solutions and found there was nothing out there, so we thought let s create something. How difficult was it to put together? What s your journey been like so far? It s been challenging but interesting at the same time. It takes real grafting 7.
DEYAH magazine to turn an idea into a success. You need indebt research; a great formula and hard work to get pass the obstacles. We had to find an app developer who understood our concept and work within our budget. It was not easy in any shape. How did you generate interests from App Designers? We went onto Fiver.com, Slancer and on People-Per-Hour and had a few interest however, we opted for a designer we got via word of mouth. How is it progressing? It s still very early days. We ve had a soft launch ending in October but startup needs time. DJs are also slowly coming on board. Do you see this knocking out the traditional flyers? Absolutely! How many times have you exited a rave knackered, tipsy and starving only to have a flyer or CD shoved in your face. Good muse replaces all that as the same promoters can use the app. This gets rid of cost of printing and less waste which is good for the environment. You ll have to find ways to get people to download the app, how do you advertise? You are correct and we are doing a lot of online marketing and through word of mouth. The commercial aspect of Social Media Marketing is way more challenging than marketing on a personal level. Also, the algorithms being implemented by social media giants make things even harder. I m still to understand algorithms. Do you think it s a way to keep people down? No, I think they re just about making money in all honesty. We re also experimenting with different form of marketing as well. But it s an on-going process to seeing what works for us. How many of you are involved in the project? Three, David Ankrah, Shuges Appiah and Myself. David and I came up with the original concept and Shuges joined us three years ago. How have you found working in a business partnership? In terms of something like this I don t think one person could have done it on alone, it s too big. It s also great to have someone to lean on and to bounce ideas off. 8.
april 2019 #issue 3 Have you tried partnerships before? No, but I ve been involved with entrepreneurship since UNI. My last venture was a headache but it won me a Business Award so it was worth it. How do you go about getting it on the app stores? The App Store is very particular with submissions. The complications of applying for a passport is nothing compared to submitting to the App Store. They reject your application for simple things like having an unrelated album cover in the background of a screenshot. Apparently this can have copyright implications. In five years time, where do you want to see good muse app? We re looking at growing Good Muse into a digital media company. We all have our own specialism and the App is just the start. So by then we expect to be on most people s phone. In terms of the expenditure to put an App together, how much money are we looking at? It depends on what you want it to do, an App like Good Muse will easily run you over 10 grand. Say I m a promoter, how do I get my event on your app and what s the cost. First download the app, register and upload your flyers and details, that simple. It s also all complimentary at the moment as we aim to get unto Play Store. How much will it cost after the complimentary period? We haven t yet established a price point but it will be very cost effective. april 2019 #issue 3 kofee toast Written by: Dennis Raidaz On Thursday, March 28, Deyah Magazine was invited to cover a performance by rising reggae star Koffee, real name Mikayla Simpson, at the Sebright Arms, 31-35 Coate St, London, E2 9AG. The event was an Amp London promotion hosted by Annie Mac and SJM Concerts. As patrons piled into the basement of the venue listed as Bethnal Green however, the ambience felt more like a night out in trendy Shoreditch. Though small with a capacity of approximately 150 people, being underground added to the atmosphere and provided for an intimate concert experience. There was a positive buzz of eager anticipation looming as people including myself waited for what promised to be exhilarating based on the-word-on-the-street of her performance the previous night. The show started off with an energetic set by London base Jamaican born rising star Alicai Harley. Also known for her panache her entrance illuminated the event with colours, style and flair to spare. Alicai came to perform! She was received well by the audience who knew her hit song Gold line by line. With the energy she brought, Alicai was the ideal prelude for what was to come. A band change followed Alicai s performance during which entertainment responsibilities were past to Sir DJ Corey. The knighted one did not disappoint as he created a Carnival like atmosphere with his selection of Soca, dancehall and R&B and kept the crowd moving throughout his 25 minutes set which ended at 9:40. This meant the moment that the nearly 200 people have been waiting for was finally here. At 9:45pm, standing at exactly 5 feet, Koffee was introduced to rapturous cheers from the screaming adoring fans. The stage was low and only inches from the crowd made them grappled with each other to get even the 11.
DEYAH magazine slightest touch of her garb. The euphoria brought home Koffee s expeditious rise from virtually internationally unknown in 2017 when she first came to the UK as a member of Chronixx touring party to now selling out several albeit small venues in no time. The first song she performed was burning which reignited the crowd s furore; from then on they never stood a chance and were literally eating from her palm. The Toast singer armed with a fast growing catalogue of hits, complimented by her childlike charm wooed the audience who by now was spellbound and like an orchestra to a conductor s baton they responded in synchrony to her every prompt. For the next 30 minutes the diminutive female reggae dancehall sing-jay artiste loaded with big tunes became the queen of East Central London and could do no wrong. Koffee s smooth yet imposing and charismatic performance had everyone in a singa-long. Her delivery was assured accompanied by a level of maturity way beyond that which her 19 years of age suggests. Apart from being the editor of this magazine and a avid fan of live performances I am also a published song writer and music producer so please believe it that many accomplished artistes could learn a lot from this young lady s diction, phonation, voice projection, timing and breathing. She could also teach them a lot about interacting with their audience. Her backing band was also impeccable and played in unison with every note she sang. As this editorial is way too short for me to truly do justice to the performance I was privileged to witness, to no fault of hers, so too was the 30 minutes she was on stage as no one wanted to leave and patrons screamed and shouted more, more at the end. There is clearly something about Koffee that even at this early stage in her career her ever growing fan base cannot get enough of. Koffe was in London as promotion to pending releases of her music however, the stage is set and I have no doubt that very soon she will be headlining her own shows and selling out concerts all over the UK. If Koffee represents strands of the future of reggae and dancehall music then rests assured, the music is in great hands or dear I say in great company based on her linage of Cocoa Tea, Protégé and Chronixx into the music business. 12.

DEYAH magazine guadeloupe carnival mas maten Written by: AC Christie Mas Maten, the Saturday morning carnival, I was told could not be missed as it reflects Guadeloupe. And they were right. A little bit about Guadeloupe carnival. From what I saw and from speaking to others within the carnival community, carnival in Guadeloupe is still very much grounded in culture and tradition in approach and presentation. There are three types of carnival groups based on their music; Po bands which play music on drums covered with animal skins and other instruments, the mas groups and the percussion groups. Almost similar to Ile Aiye in Salvador Brazil, the most popular bands such as Akyio (Group o Po) started with awareness of cultural identity through art and culture as one of their core beliefs. Mas Maten, in Pointe A Pitre is always a depiction or a reflection of cultural, political or historical identity of Guadeloupe. The make up, costumes, products, flowers, colours, used on their skin all have deep significance. Although a territory of France, their cultural make up is similar to that of the other islands in the Caribbean. Include the French influence and this makes for a rich cultural heritage. Masqueraders from many bands came together under the Group o Po Pwenlamas Le Point d Interrogation. Mas Maten was themed this year Kongo Karayib. This year, it was thinking about the early settlers of the Caribbean; the Karibo (Karib) who migrated from South America and Kongo representing the people from Africa who were forced into slavery in the 16.
april 2019 #issue 3 Caribbean. Masqueraders choosing Kongo covered their body with black gwo siwo (fat syrup) produced with sugar cane. Those who had opted for the Karib s costume covered themselves with roucou oil. Each person paid a wrist band of 2 euros to play mas and chose which they would depict. Mas maten I have been told has become very popular with young people. We got to Point A Pitre a bit late nut did not miss Pwenlamas. One thing I have noticed is that Guadeloupe has a lot more onlookers than some other places I have participated in carnival. People lined the streets two or three rows thick to see pwenlemas march past. I got permission to stand on the jury stage to capture this Pwenlamas. It was a bit of a wait as they started in a town called Les Abymes and then came to where we were in Point A Pitre and then to Le Gosier. People were calling others along the route to ask where they were. There were constant rumours of They are nearly here. My anticipation would build up and then would deflate when they did not. And then they suddenly appeared, this large number of people, marching like an army to the beat of drums, singing, chanting in their costumes. Kongo, karyib, painted faces, painted skin, beautiful patterned cloths. Headpieces made of cloth, braches, flowers. Must have been no less than 5000 people. It was a beautiful sight to behold. And then they were gone! And it was suddenly quiet. 17.

So now we can squash and squeeze the brown heavy teddy bear coat into a bin liner and park it in its reserved space atop the wardrobe, that s if you had indeed invested in one. If not what were you wearing? April to June is truly Bomber time and from now till then the bomber that s never truly out of style however often its design changes over the years, will make appearances just about everywhere until summer peaks usually at the start of July. Previously known as the flyers jacket for its association with pilots in the US Air force, the bomber jacket has always been and still is an integral piece in any wardrobe. Memories of my childhood lingers in my head and I still see my dad strutting in either his green or black anorak both of which had blinding bright orange colored sheep skin inner lining. Nowadays spring is as much a fashion statement time of year as any other and to the overtly trendy among us Bomber time can easily cost the price of a wedding or a brand new car as the more luxurious brands costing as much as 10,000. Whilst they ve maintained their purposes with some styles still light and comfy and others remain padded for people who feel the cold more than others, the colors and designs have evolved with time. DEYAH magazine HOW TO GIVE YOUR SKIN THAT NATURAL GLOW I am unapologetic about my love for makeup which looks more flawless and prettier when applied to naturally good skin. However, nothing beats having skin that glows without makeup. Using the right products is the first step in achieving great skin. The second step is routine, therefore having a consistent regime can be an absolute GAME CHANGER. Here are some tips to consider when choosing products suitable for you. 1. Moisturiser it is important to know your own skin type before selecting a moisturiser. All skin types require a moisturiser including oily skins, but the density of the moisturizer will depend on their skin type. If your GP cannot help a one-off visit to a dermatologist to know your skin type might be best. 2. Serum This is food for the skin. Toner is also great for improving the surface of the skin and removing stubborn traces of dirt and makeup. 4. Facial Wash Now, this may be an obvious one but if women care to be truthful plenty will admit to still use shower gel to wash their face. Shower gel is made for the torso which includes elbows, knees and bums, not faces. Some shower gels are also highly perfumed which can be an irritant and may also create a reaction of the skin. When comes in contact with your face shower gel can be harsh on the texture of your face which is one of the most delicate places on a person. People who wear makeup should consider Miscellar Face wash, or other gentle washes formulated to remove makeup. 5. Face Wipes Definitely a must when it comes any skin care regime. It s best to use face wipes to remove your makeup, mascara and eye shadow etc as the process can be stressful on your face using face wash alone. After you ve removed the makeup with the wipes give your face a thorough rinse before settling in. april 2019 #issue 3 lactose or no lactose by monique mac Soya, Almond or Oats? With the rise of alternative milk options, we need to get real about lactose. Lactose intolerance is usually the result of evolution, we drink less milk as we grow older. We wean from our mothers the same as lamb and calf do. Have you ever seen a cow drinking another cow s milk, think about it. Lactose intolerance is not reserved for a few unfortunate individuals, in fact, research suggests that some groups are more susceptible to intolerance specifically Black, Asian, Hispanic and Native American people. Some findings boldly claim that approximately 75% of people of African descent are lactose intolerant. What is lactose anyway? Lactose is the sugar in mammals milk. Intolerance is caused by the absence of the enzyme lactase which breaks lactose down. Think about it like the arcade game Pac-Man. The lactose are the power cookies and the enzymes we need to break them down are Pac-Man. This is a pretty basic description, but it paints the picture well. If you don t have Pac-Man, what does your body do with all the power cookies? Your body tries to do it s best to break down the sugars without lactase. Instead it breaks down the sugars anaerobically which means with minimal or no oxygen but there s no for such detail. Basically, your stomach becomes full of gas and sometimes water enters into your intestines to try and relieve those gaseous symptoms. The result of this process is Diarrhea. 29.
DEYAH magazine Here are a few of the symptoms you will experience if you are lactose intolerant: They may include: Wind (flatulence) Bloated stomach Stomach cramps and pains Diarrhea Some people may still be able to consume moderate quantities of milk or milk products such as cheese, whilst others may not be able to have even the smallest amount in warm beverages. But calcium! Don t we need it; is it not important for your bones and teeth? Certainly, but milk is not the only source of calcium. There are some substitutes and other sources of calcium such as: Soy and rice Broccoli Oranges Pinto beans Spinach However, calcium isn t the only important mineral in milk, there s also other proteins and vitamins such as A, B12 and D. Vitamin D is essential for those of African descent living in cold climates. Vitamins D deficiency can contribute to back pain, fatigue, hair loss and even depression. To maintain good Vitamin D levels I recommend yearly holidays, going home to the motherland, the Caribbean or treat yourself to a sunny European break, maybe Spain or Croatia. But if your bank account is begging you to be humble, then try consuming more fish or taking vitamin D supplements. The conversation however, is that people of BAME can better help themselves by consulting with their GP know whether they are lactose intolerant, to know their Vitamin D level and also finding out the best food groups suitable for them. 30.
