Prepared by: Jeyakumar & Kamali Jeyakumar, 9884496988 / 9444866650, sjkmani@hotmail.com All you want to know to start a career in Design: Career after 12th standard is full of choices. In such condition, from among all the fields you are good at, you need to figure out what will suit you the most when it comes to building a career. Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, likings, aptitude and interests, there are many options in the field of Design 1. Communication Design 2. Textile Design 3. Accessory Design 4. Jewelry Design 5. Knitwear Design 6. Leather Design 7. Fashion Styling and Image Design 8. Fashion Communication 9. Apparel Production 10. Game Design 11. Footwear Technology 12. Apparel Design and Merchandising 13. Product Design 14. Furniture Design 15. Interior Design 16. Ceramic and Glass Design 17. Transportation and Automobile Design 18. Graphic Design 19. Animation Design 20. Film and Video Communication 21. Exhibition Design 22. Fashion Design 23. Architecture 24. Civil Construction 25. Urban Design By the end of 10th standard one should be clear about which field to opt for after 12th standard studies. Accordingly, the child can choose the subjects in 11th standard. Students from any stream (Science, commerce, arts at 12thstd) can get into designing field. But few institutes require science compulsory at 12th std for admission. So it s better to list out by 10th Std the colleges you will be opting for further education after 12th. Its observed that CBSE students fare better. The field of designing is also having good placements and income just like other fields such as engineering, medical, financial planning and so on. Here we would strongly like to emphasize the fact that 12th standard education and clearing entrance exam for admission to designing college both are equally important. Passing both are the eligibility criteria for admission to the design college. Child had to create balance between both. Because of the extreme pressure of 12th standard studies we recommend the student to prepare for entrance exam from 9th standard onwards.

How to decide whether child is fit for the field of designing: If child is having good observation power, designing and imaginative expression he/ she is surely fit for the field of designing. If you wish to check the child s aptitude that whether he/she is fit for designing field, you can try out by using sample aptitude test. Best time for preparation: Student can start preparing for entrance exam from standard 9th onwards. The sooner you start, the better are your chances of success. Careers after Graduation: Graduate students from any discipline such as BA, B.Com, B.Sci can join design colleges such as NID, NIFT and other prestigious design colleges for Master of Design course. Duration of the master programmes is 2 to 2-1/2 years. Generally, students think that NID, NIFT and various other premier design colleges offer master courses and career in design field to only Engineers, Architects and Design Graduates. But this is not true. Many courses of these prestigious institutes can be joined by even B.A., B.Com., and B.Sc Graduates and they can make great career after graduation. Following career courses are available after Graduation (Post Graduate options) 1. Product Design 2. Animation Film Design 3. Ceramic and Glass Design 4. Film & Video Communication 5. NID questions are framed to judge a candidate s creativity, imagination & visualization skills/ observation/ general awareness etc. The most common misconception among NID aspirants is that if you draw well, then you can crack NID, which is totally false. NID focuses on problem-solving capabilities and intellect. 2. Be Creative Creativity is the ability to come up with new, original ideas which are not conventional. It is the breaking away from the stereotype, routine, accepted set of thoughts and possessing a deeper insight to problem solving. In short, a creative person experiences rebirth everyday with his or her ideas. 3. Understand that your drawing & creative skills are useless if you are not able to present your thoughts in the exam in the limited amount of time. You stand to lose marks for the questions you fail to answer or which are left incomplete, it doesn t matter how good you are at your work. So speed is equally important. 4. Go through all previous papers of NID. Solve at least 8-10 past papers within the time limit. Find out a comfortable sequence of answering the paper. 5. Don t practice in A3 size sketch books. Work in A4 size as that is normally the standard size of answer sheets in the examinations. 6. Find your own deep and compelling reason to successfully clear NID. Motivate yourself. Work with enthusiasm & you will be amazed at your ideas & creations. 7. In exam, be confident about what you are drawing and answering. One should not worry about marks or scoring high; the focus should be on communicating your ideas creatively in the paper. 8. In questions requiring drawing, always draw with a light hand first, doing mainly the outlining without the details. When you are satisfied with the proportions & the rough outline, you may finalize. You will save a lot of time that students normally waste in erasing & re-drawing. 9. Practice more with dry mediums (colors), as they are convenient to use and take less time in exams.

10. Plan your time for school/college study & you entrance preparation. Use your time effectively with a time table Tips for how to crack NIFT 1. The first thing that you need to do to begin your preparation is to have a complete idea about the syllabus. Stick to the prescribed syllabus of the NIFT entrance exam. 2. Set objectives of what you wish to achieve and in how much time. Decide on how much time you wish to spend on each section and plan your preparation accordingly. Practice is the key to success. 3. Try to sketch almost anything and everything you come across. Browse through various newspapers, magazines and online sites. Take ideas from various advertisements, posters, banners etc., you come across. 4. Sketching skill is one of the most important requirements. Your creativity and your ideas would mean nothing if you could not put them onto paper. Keep your eraser away from you while practicing. It ll help your lines become bolder and confident. 5. Give importance to detailing where ever required, like the face of a human figure or the human s outfits etc. 6. Try to master the skills of human illustration. Concentrate more in proportions, form etc. 7. Calligraphy skills come handy in posters, banner design, etc. Learn and practice different styles of lettering as they can come handy. 8. While sketching first make a light sketch and later darken the drawing once you are confident about it. This helps you save time erasing mistakes. Please use quality color pencils. 9. Planning is very important. First plan your ideas and then start on with sketching. 10. Start off with simple ones like logo design or t-shirt design. Go for the complicated ones like scene drawing later. You only have limited time to answer the questions. You need to be quick while solving the problems. Top Design college in India 1.
