ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR HAIR, MAKEUP & COSTUMES HAIR s must be neat with loads of hairspray and/or gel used to keep stray hairs in place. Starting with damp hair and using a fine tooth comb to make the ponytail will help make a neater bun. NO FRINGES. elastics must blend in with hair colour. The Ponytail before making a bun should be in line with cheekbones (centre of crown) if looking from the side on. Buns must have a hairnet. Please use Bun pins (also known as French pins) to secure your bun and regular bobby pins only for any stray hairs that need securing. An average bun needs at least 15 bun pins to keep it secured properly. For students that have hair style changes, please make sure you have a clearly marked zip lock bag or container with your hair supplies and spare hair nets so that backstage helpers can assist. All girls should have a spare supply of pins and elastics in their bags. If you are unsure how to do a correct ballet bun please watch the video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfvqokpxm0o Where they suggest forming the ponytail in line with jaw, please line up with cheekbones instead. SEE BELOW FOR EXAMPLES OF HAIRSTYLES MAKEUP All girls must wear foundation, one shade darker than their natural colour. Pressed or Translucent powder after foundation helps to set the foundation and prevent it being too shiny under the lights Eye Shadow is to be in neutral and brown colours with black eyeliner and black mascara applied after the eye shadow. A natural looking blush is to be worn. For younger students, if you can t get them to wear eyeliner or mascara, a thin line of black eye shadow in place of eyeliner will be fine.
All Girls are to bring a red lipstick with them in a labelled zip lock sandwich type bag. Each student must have their own to prevent sharing germs. They are not to have this on until they are in costume. One of our backstage staff will apply for them. Boys are to wear a light layer of foundation in their skin tone or slightly darker. The lighting used on stage is very harsh and without foundation the boys will look washed out. They do not need to wear makeup on Photo Day NO NAIL POLISH (CONTEMPORARY STUDENTS DON T FORGET YOUR TOENAILS) JEWELLERY Absolutely no jewellery is to be worn or brought to the venue. This includes earrings, chains, bracelets, necklaces, anklets or rings unless for medical purposes. Students will be asked to remove any such items if they are wearing them. Please leave all jewellery at home as we cannot guarantee that they won t be lost. FOOTWEAR All footwear must have their names labelled INSIDE the shoe (not on the sole as this is visible in certain steps from the audience). There are over 500 pairs of shoes backstage and many look the same. If a student loses their shoes they will be unable to perform. Tap Shoes All Tap shoes are to be polished and screws are to be checked to ensure they are tightly done up. Loose screws can damage the stage to which we will be liable to fix. They can also pose a safety risk as screws can fall out which subsequent dancers in bare feet could injure themselves on. All stickers on bottoms of tap shoes need to be removed. Shoes should be packed unbuckled or untied so they are easier to put on Jazz Shoes Jazz shoes must be slip on. If anyone has laces they must be replaced with elastic. All shoes should be clean and any visible scuffs should be painted or filled in. Ballet Shoes All Ballet shoes must be clean. To clean use a damp (not wet) cloth with a tiny bit of soap to clean. Do not saturate the shoe or the leather will shrink and stiffen. A baby wipe works well. Any scuffs will need to be painted. You can buy ballet pink shoe paint at many bootmakers All Ballet shoes must have the elastic strap across the foot
UNDERWEAR All girls need to wear seamless, beige/flesh coloured underwear. You can buy these from Centre Stage Dancewear or Bloch Dancewear. Regular underwear is too bulky and can be seen underneath dance costumes while students are dancing. Hip Hop only students may wear Plain Black underwear if their pants are black. NO SINGLETS ARE TO BE WORN Boys should wear plain black underwear. If Boys have white underwear for any of their items, light plain coloured underwear should be worn so as not to be seen under Stage Lighting. Crops tops/bras are not to be worn unless physically required Bras must be flesh coloured and not visible at all underneath their costumes. Clear straps to be worn if necessary. Example of Correct Makeup:
HIGH BUN HIGH STRAIGHT PONYTAIL
