TutuSchools.Com Description of Classes Charlo e, NC July 11-24, 2016 Advanced and Stylized Performance Tutus $400-$800 New This Year! Odalisque Tutu and Contemporary Flying Saucer Tutu! Description: If you have constructed traditional tutus and are ready for a serious challenge, this is the class for you. The focus in this class is on style, imagination, technique, knowledge, and very hard work! Our newest Advanced Tutu Project is Odalisque, the intricate layering of various tulles and nets to achieve an exotic but subtle mix of color, rather than the high-contrast striped looked. Also new is the addition of the Flying Saucer tutu to the Contemporary option. Other advanced projects include completely double-hand-pleated tutus; roll-hemmed 19-layer Faerie tutus; Spanish-style tutus; multiwidth tutus; top-ruffled tutus; Ribbon-Candy tutus; Claudia s Fusion tutu design a beautiful tutu fusing both the classical and romantic techniques; contemporary-style Potato-Chip and Flying Saucer tutus; half and half Wild Side tutus; and our newest offering, a vintage French-style technique of alternating the way each row is attached, and then attaching a removable basque with a three-inch seam allowance at the bottom edge, allowing the tutu to be adjustable for dancers of different heights and body types. You will learn several ruffling techniques, including Tutu.Com s signature double-hand pleating method. Allow three days. Ballet Dresses $400-$600 New This Year! Gamzatti Ballet Dress and Amore/Cupid Ballet Dress! Description: Next to the tutu, beautiful flowing dance dresses are the most sought-after designs for ballet. Our gorgeous dresses are designed for fit, comfort, flow, and flattery! Choose from the Gamzatti, Amore/Cupid, Empire Dress, Peasant Skirt and Bodice, or Tiered-Spanish Skirt. Developed over many years of tutu and dance-dress design and construction, these are the same patterns our own costume shop uses every day in her own custom designs. You will find these dresses perfect for both classical roles and as the starting point for your own fabulous creations. Allow three days for the Peasant Ballet Dress, and two days for the Empire, Spanish Ballet Dresses, and one and a half days for the Gamzatti and Cupid/Amore Ballet Dress. Bodice 1&2 $350-400 New This Year! Adult Odalisque for Bodice 2! Description: Complete your tutu, dress, skirt, or other costume with a custom bodice. This class offers your choice of several very different style and complexity selections, with

options for creating both woven-fabric and stretch-fabric bodices. New for this year is the Adult Odalisque crop top bodice. Project choices include 6, 8, 10,12, and 16-piece bodices, plus peasant-style. Fabric choices include bengaline, brocade, spandex, and our new stretch taffetas and stretch jacquards. In Bodice One, you will learn how to properly use the fabric grainline, flatlining techniques, how to add bone casings to linings, how to cut and tip steel spiral boning, finishing techniques with elasticized cording, and time-honored hand-sewing techniques. Bodice Two is a continuation of Bodice One, adding more stitching techniques, including corded seams, different nude inset and overlay techniques, attaching boning to both linings and seam allowances, and invisible closures. We prefer that you complete Bodice One before taking Bodice Two, unless you have made corsetted bodices before, using proper flatlining techniques. Allow two days. Bodice 3 - Advanced Design Techniques $600 New This Year! Bodice Three Class -- From Concept Through Completion Description: In this Advanced-level course, each student will first, sketch out their basic bodice design, using an upper-body croqui (body sketch), then, using a basic sloper or block, will begin to make their design a reality using costume-shop flat-patterning techniques. Students will choose from three basic shapes: 16-piece peasant-style; long-line, princess-seam-style; and diagonal-style-lines with a point in the front. You will then cut out your design using muslin, baste it together and fit it on a dress form (or a dancer if you bring one with you). Adjustments will then be made to the pattern. Finally, when happy with the pattern, the bodice will be cut out and constructed. We will be using fabric layering techniques, both regular and elastic-piped edges, and seam piping. Students are encouraged to bring bits of laces and small pieces of fabrics that they would like to incorporate into their bodice design. Pre re-requisite requisite Bodice Two or work in a professional costume shop you must have mastered the many techniques taught in the Bodice One and Bodice Two classes before embarking on this journey. Allow three days. Children s Pull-On Tutus $150 Description: Join us for an evening of making fabulous tutus for children. Participants will make an adorable four-layer, soft-tulle, pull-on tutu and decorate it with ribbons and trims. These tutus make a great project for fundraisers for ballet schools and companies. We are happy to customize a schedule to meet your needs. Available classes for the Make Your Own schedule are all Tutus, Bodice One and Two, Dance Dresses, Tiaras and Headpieces, Children s Pull-On Tutus and Men s Tunics. Descriptions of each of these available classes can be found throughout this schedule. Necessary time to be allowed will vary based on project(s) chosen. Men s Tunics Level One $425 Description: Classical tutus aren t the only kinds of dance costumes, and these other costumes shouldn t come from second-hand stores or someone s attic. This class is an introduction to sewing costumes for male dancers. You will choose from one of three pattern styles: Claudia Folts/Kellie Sheehan s Classic Style Tunic, which is a great base and easily adaptable to different necklines/sleeve styles for many roles; Jeremy Bernardoni s Deep V Doublet or Prince Charming Doublet, two classically elegant doublets with simple, clean style lines; and Don Quixote Jacket, the perfect bolero for many Spanish-style roles. In this Level One class, you will learn how to correctly use your grain lines, and choose between set-in sleeves and sleeves set on an undervest. Allow two days. Men s Tunics Level Two $450

Description: This class is for those who have mastered the basics of sewing men s costumes and want to learn and refine more advanced tailoring techniques. You will learn when and how to use various interlinings, choose between French-tailored set-in sleeves and sleeves set on an undervest, and master advanced pressing techniques used to give your men s costumes that extra special quality that few can attain. Choose from several patterns: Claudia Folts Princely Tunic with sleeves attached to a separate undervest; Jeremy Bernardoni s Nutcracker Jacket; Jeremy Bernardoni s Sleeping Beauty Doublet; or Jeremy Bernardoni s elegant Rococo-style Doublet. Allow two days. Romantic Performance Tutus $400-$425 New This Year! Mariinsky-Inspired Bell Tutu Description: Soft, long, flowing in a word, romantic. Who would guess there are so many ways to make romantic tutus? With new and unique styles, this class offers multiple challenges, complexities and opportunities. This year we are offering seven different romantic projects Traditional Giselle style; Neo-Classical with a high-waisted basque; Roll-hemmed Petaled Waltz of the Flowers; Russian Gored; Reversible Romantic; tapered Cascading roll-hemmed style; and our newest the Mariinsky-inspired Bell Romantic/Classical tutu. Allow one to two days, depending on project chosen. Stretch Boot Tops $ 75 Description: A quick and easy fix, adding character and style to both prince and folk/peasant costumes. These cuffed boot tops can be easily attached to either ballet or jazz shoes. Allow two hours. Stretch Tutus $650-$700 Description: This class was developed for those who are interested in making tutus using stretch materials but want to have more of a polished, professional quality look than the stretch tutus and children s tutus currently available. You will make a beautiful, professional-quality tutu-skirt, attached to one of three choices of a stretch, leotard-style top. Students MUST have experience sewing stretch fabrics, as the techniques used in stretch sewing do have a bit of a learning curve. If you have NEVER worked with stretch fabrics before, we suggest you take our Basic Leotard Class before attempting this class; however, this is not a firm prerequisite, as many experienced stitchers will pick up the techniques quite easily. This is a professional quality tutu built in the traditional classical style with a modern twist, and you won t want to miss it! Allow two to three days. The Business of the Costume Business $25-50 Description: Claudia Folts, founder and owner of Tutu.Com, and special guests invite you to an informal discussion of the dance costume business. Whether you are thinking about starting your own business or you re already in business, this round-table will be of benefit to you. Topics will include ethical business practices/behavior, design ethics, pricing your work, advertising, building a strong social media presence, developing a following, the importance of excellent customer service, how to easily make an unhappy client happy, ballet appropriateness in design and color selections, and much more. Bring your questions and experiences! *$25, if registered for other classes, otherwise $50. Allow 90 minutes.

Tiaras/Headpieces $75-$325 Description: You know the ones those beautiful Crystal Tiaras that look like real diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. The ones that will make those ready-made tiaras turn pale in comparison! Our projects include basic, intermediate, and advancedlevel designs, with Swarovski and Czech rhinestones. (You might be surprised how many directors would love to wear their own tiara on Performance night!) Choose from projects including Princess, Arabian, Classic, Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow Queen, Russian Princess/Kokoshnik, Esmerelda Headpiece, or Aurora s Wedding. You may also choose to create Flower and Jewel Headpieces. Allow five to six hours. Tutu Marathon $400-800 Description: For those stitchers who are experienced enough to absorb and apply techniques quickly. These are two FULL, action-packed days -- definitely not for beginners or those who like to stitch slowly and savor the experience. You will receive the same hours of instruction (22 hours over two days instead of 22 hours over three days), the same choices, and the same projects/kits as the other tutu classes, except over a two-day session rather than three-day session. This class moves at an accelerated pace, allowing for these students to take additional classes, if they so choose. Allow two days.
