VOLUME THREE ISSUE SIX Ruben and Isabel Toledo in their New York studio. Ruben does fashion illustration for Nordstrom and Isabel is a fashion designer. Create your own Toms A Look Back at Alexander McQueen The Fashion show will be here before you know it! Pay attention to deadlines. An Internship at Anna Sui

Internship with Anna Sui Amy Morris Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, and what is happening. - Coco Chanel. I never thought that one day my dream of going to NYC Fashion Week would come true. This summer I had the opportunity to do my design internship in New York City with Anna Sui. This was the first experience I had in NYC and working for a design house. I had the chance to interact with a variety of people and learn just what went on behind the scenes. I also had the chance to go back to NYC in September for Fashion Week. This was definitely an experience I will never forget. When I walked up to the extravagant big white tent in Bryant Park I was thrilled that in a couple of minutes I would actually be inside attending Anna Sui s fashion show. I was amazed as to what was in store for me while attending the show. When I was in the tent I had the opportunity to meet Fern Malis who is Vice President of marketing for International Management Group models (IMG) Fashion. She is also best recognized for organizing Fashion Week, an event which IMG produces. I was in shock when I met her! As I made my way into Anna Sui s runway it was beautiful how everything was displayed. It was a black runway with a pink and purple circus tent backdrop. The show opened with circusthemed music and a model in a majorette hat and cape walking in front of the circus tent backdrop. Anna Sui s 2010 collection had inspiration from the 1960s and the circus scene in the 1967 film Doctor Dolittle. The collection was very playful; the main colors being used were purple, yellow, orange, brown, and of course black. There was a variety of fabric prints and of course lots of embroidered trims and lace. If you ever have the chance to attend or volunteer for Fashion Week, I suggest you do; it will be an amazing experience, and you never know who you just might meet!

The Fashion World is Mourning the Loss of Designer Alexander McQueen Maddie Thompson On Thursday, February 11th, news broke that fashion designer and extravagant visionary Alexander McQueen took his own life. This shocking news has shaken the fashion world immensely. McQueen was known for his eccentric and revolutionary vision and designs. This tragedy happened just days before his Fall 2010 line was to hit the runway in New York for Fall Fashion Week, and a month before his line was to turn heads at the 2010 Paris Fashion Week. His death has been heartbreaking for his family and friends. Lee (Alexander) McQueen had just lost his mother days before he took his own life. Her funeral was scheduled for February 12th. Sources say that McQueen was having a terrible time dealing with the death of his mother. McQueen had also experienced the loss of his good friend Isabella Blow a few years ago. Isabella was a close friend of McQueen s and was partially responsible for jump-starting his career. These two major losses in his life have had a tremendous impact on the designer s life. Some believe these events could have been contributing factors to his death. McQueen was known for his eccentricity, unique style and unexpected influence on mainstream fashion. His shows earned a reputation for extravagance, vision, and scope, as showcased in his hallmark 2006 show, Widows of Culliden. He was termed l enfant terrible for his controversial and cutting-edge style. He was also the mastermind behind bumsters, low-rise jeans which served as seed for the low-cut fad so familiar to many of us. Alexander McQueen won British Designer of the Year from the British Fashion Council four separate times and was the youngest designer to receive such an honor. His creations were favorites of many celebrities such as Lady GaGa, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Rihanna. Alexander McQueen was without a doubt an influential force in the fashion world. His imagination came alive in each of his garments. He is survived by his father and five siblings, who have publicly expressed their deep grief about these family tragedies. The significance of this blow to the creative and innovative spirit of the art of fashion cannot be understated. He will be missed tremendously and the fashion industry will not be the same without him.

Fall 2010 Jamie Hartwick So there might still be snow on the ground, but designers are already getting colors, inspiration, and designs ready for Fall 2010. Personally, I love looking at the variety of inspirations implemented to come up with designs. I encourage you all to expand where you look for inspiration and be original and creative. Although we do not want to copy what the designers are currently doing, it is very important to know what is going on in the fashion world. Some designers post some of their favorites designs for the fall lines. Peter Som states that one of his favorite fall fashions is an Ombre Blue tie-dye lace top while Tommy Hilfiger says the navy sleeveless blazer is a new take on an long standing classic. Betsey Johnson says a Victorian corset in Hot Lizard Green is one of her favorite picks. An overall big trend that we will see from designers for fall 2010 is jackets in multiple styles. Look for all of these new fall trends on the New York runways. Colors are also a big part of the designing process. Pantone s most popular colors consist of a fairly bright palatte with Purple Orchard being the number one pick. Peter Som chose the number three, a very natural and earthy green tone, as his signature color. Overall, I think there will be some big surprises in fashion for the fall and many things to look forward to. Catherine Malandrino Tracy Reese 5

Experience as a Merchandiser Kaity Downey With the start of my senior year, I began working at Juniper, a local West Lafayette clothing boutique. The owner of the boutique discussed with me her need for someone to help with the over-all appearance of the store, and upon hiring me, assigned me to be the stores merchandiser. A merchandiser is the primary marketer of a manufacturer s product and is accountable for placing the product in a desirable position to edge out the competition. The job of a merchandiser requires a keen eye on trends and markets and is the key to a retailer s marketing plan and provides beneficial firsthand knowledge of consumer purchases. I immediately became familiar with the store and my experience as a merchandiser began. My duties as a merchandiser for this specific store started with giving the store a fresh look and providing the customers a different shopping experience. I wanted to change the store enough so the customers who shopped frequently would see a fresh new look, and notice the clothes and accessories that might not have stood out in their previous visits. I also wanted to draw in new customers who were not familiar with the boutique yet. I began with the window displays. Every Monday and Friday the garments on the model forms in the window are changed and a new trend is displayed for the next few days. The window displays attract the customers who are passing by and gives them an over-all idea of what the store has to offer. Keeping these looks updated and trendy is a key factor when merchandising the store. Juniper also has three mannequins in a side window that are changed once a week. These forms show a more put- together look and the outfit as a whole; making it easier for the shopper to put a look together for purchase. The store is constantly updating its looks, so it is also important to keep the store looking completely different by doing floor sets, and moving all of the merchandise around. These floor sets are done monthly as well as the jewelry displays. Usually we receive boxes of new merchandise each month, which requires us to revamp the store layout. Moving racks, shelves, and shoes displays updates the store just enough to make it look different and new. I am constantly at the store, whether it is steaming new merchandise to put out, or thinking of new concepts and ideas for the displays. Although it is time consuming and hard to balance with classes, I am so grateful to have such an exciting job. This experience as a retail merchandiser has given me so many opportunities. Not only has it offered me a great leadership experience, but it has also opened my eyes to new career opportunities. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. NEWS 8

February 17, 2010 Susan Owens & Nancy Strickler Purdue University Via email Dear Ms. Owens and Ms. Strickler, Sheila Stein recently spoke with you about a project we are planning and she asked me to send you some details. The Lubeznik Center for the Arts, located on the lakeshore in Michigan City, Indiana, is hosting a fashion design project similar to Project Runway, the television hit on Lifetime TV. Our event, Rock the Runway: Emerging Designer Competition, will celebrate young talented designers from Chicago and Indiana colleges/ universities, specifically Columbia College of Chicago, The School of the Art Institute and Purdue University. Rock the Runway is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, June 12, at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. Taking a cue from the television show, we will have 3 respected fashion designers judge the work of these participating young designers. We have arranged to have the winner s work displayed in a downtown Chicago window and working on a spread in a major regional glossy magazine. The window display will be installed in October which corresponds to the Chicago Cultural Center s Fashion Month. All you have to do for now is begin your selection process for 4-5 young talented designers. Designers should feature fall looks of either suits, coats, separates or dresses. Once your choices have been made please send their names and contact information to my email listed below or call 219-874-4900 x201. Many thanks for your interest in Rock the Runway. We believe this event will generate excitement for the designers, the schools they attend and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. With your help we look forward to a successful and fun afternoon. As Tim Gunn would say, let s make it work! Sincerely, Carolyn Saxton Executive Director csaxton@lubeznikcenter.org If you are interested in competing in this event, we want to hear from you NOW!!
