asian works of art from the collection of phillip and kay cha To members of the Chicago art and antiques community, Phillip and Kay Cha present two very familiar faces. The Chas have enriched their own lives and the lives of those around them by collecting and studying art for the last five decades. Their gallery, Asian House, has been a prominent fixture in Chicago for over thirty years. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is honored to auction items from their collection, which embodies their longstanding passion for the arts. Mr. Cha arrived from South Korea in 1964 to pursue his undergraduate degree in business administration at New York University. He would also eventually receive an M.B.A. from NYU Stern School of Business. While living in New York (where Mr. Cha believes every young person should live), he met his wife, Kay Lee. Mrs. Cha had emigrated to New York to pursue her M.F.A. at the Pratt Institute, after receiving her B.F.A. in painting from the prestigious Hongik University in Seoul. An accomplished artist in her own right, she has staged a solo exhibition in Seoul, in addition to completing public murals at the Veterans Administration Building and at Seoul Grand Central Railroad Station. Phillip and Kay married in New York in 1972 and decided to move to Chicago to raise their three young sons, Jeffrey, Jason and Justin. They opened their first gallery on Michigan Avenue in 1975 and would travel the world four or five times a year to look for unique works of art. In 1987, they moved to Kinzie Street in downtown Chicago, named it Asian House of Chicago, and have been important figures in the Chicago antiques scene since. In addition to operating Asian House, Phillip and Kay collected for themselves for thirty years. Featured in this auction are several rare Chinese bronzes, a Song painting of Vanavasa and a Northern Wei carving of Shakyamuni. We are honored to have the opportunity to work with the Chas and to present this sale of their collection.
