President s Welcome Dear Friends, I find it hard to believe that the Winter Meeting 2016 marks the end of my two years as BAPRAS President. It has flown by. We have a great programme for you and I also have the enormous privilege that we have a Hunterian Lecture from Australia and an Australian, in the shape of Brian Sommerlad, delivering the McIndoe Lecture on his work and the enormous impact he has had on the treatment of cleft lip and palate both in this country and internationally. I am also delighted that the Royal College of Surgeons of England is conferring an Honorary Fellowship on Dr Foad Nahai, who trained in Medicine in Bristol, as did I, and then moved to the USA because he felt the career path was more open there in the 1970s. A tragedy for UK Plastic Surgery. Our inability, as a specialty, to look beyond individual self-interest blighted us badly in the 70s and 80s. I hope I have helped make us more outward-looking during my two years and that those who viewed me at the Fifth Column now have a different view of my passion for our specialty and our Association. Members - Please attend the AGM. The changes coming in the redevelopment of Royal College of Surgeons of England make our choices in the next few months crucial and your Council need you to decide on our course. BFIRST s mission is to train surgeons working in some of the poorest countries in the world by sending BFIRST Consultant Plastic Surgeons and their teams of relevant allied healthcare professionals on regular training trips tailored to the local needs in reconstructive surgery. We aim to make partnerships between units abroad and BFIRST teams, so our training maintains the local relevance and tracks progress. We have also uniquely built in an assessment of the BFIRST teams by the local surgeons and staff, and we continue to monitor the local surgeons progress through ISCP based assessment tools. 38
