The ability to provide tanning advice relevant to the client s skin type and ensure usage to current industry guidelines is very important. To carry out this unit you will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene throughout your work. UV30450_v5

Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Be able to prepare for UV tanning Safe working practices and legislation: Health and safety at work, workplace regulations, manual handling, personal protective equipment (gloves (avoid latex, powdered gloves), goggles (a pair made available to client)), management of health and safety at work regulations, provision and use of work equipment regulations, liability insurance employers, public, professional indemnity, control of substances hazardous to health/material safety data sheets - handling, storage, disposal, cautions of products, Habia code of practice for UV services, FHT code of ethics and professional practice, local government legislation, fire precaution, electricity at work (portable appliance testing PAT), first aid, reporting injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations. Disposal of waste: Single use items (disposable underwear), pedal bin with a liner, spillages and unused solvents, contaminated waste, hazardous waste, environmental protection. Disinfection: Heat or chemical methods, bactericides, fungicides, viricides. Hygiene techniques and procedures: Sterilise tools, disinfect work surfaces, cover cuts and abrasions, sanitise technician s and client s hands before and after treatments, sanitise with sprays and gels, clean towels between clients, washed at 60 C, disposable towels, dispense products with a spatula, pump or spray, ventilation for vapour, avoid overexposure to chemicals, correct use of chemicals (control of substances hazardous to health), manufacturer s instructions, no smoking, personal hygiene, replacing loose lids, uncapped bottles and pots. Consultation techniques: Client requirements and therapist s recommendations, client satisfaction, client expectations and aftercare, signatures of client and therapist, client card reference. Use a range of related terminology linked to UV treatment. Contra-indications prevent treatment: Fungal infection, bacterial infection, viral infection, infestations, severe eczema, severe psoriasis, severe skin conditions, eye infections, during chemotherapy, during radiotherapy, history of skin cancer, medication that causes skin sensitivity, excessive number of freckles/moles that have undergone change, itch or bleed, under 16, skin that does not tan. Contra-indications restrict treatment: Previous heat treatments, UV exposure, IPL or laser treatments, micro dermabrasion, chemical skin peels, use of steroids, certain anti-ageing products, high/ low blood pressure, respiratory conditions and pregnancy. Planning: Preparation of the client, clean skin, no body lotions, perfumes, creams, deodorants, skin exfoliation, tan accelerator lotion. Influencing factors: Contra-indications, skin condition, medication, client expectations and preparation, natural shade of skin, effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin. Negative effects: Ageing, malignant melanoma, changes in moles, pigmentation problems (UVA, UVB, UVC), degrees of erythema associated with sunburn, sunscreens, sun protection factor (SPF) photoageing, damage to the eyes. Equipment standards: Cleanliness, hygiene, health and safety requirements, cubicle safety, head pillow and paper towel for flat sunbed, control risk of cross-infection, the importance of regular disinfecting and sterilising of equipment between treatments, suitable extraction methods, cleanliness of cubicle disposable paper on floor, sterilised goggles. Safety considerations: Methods of sanitisation, disposal of contaminated waste, legislation, personal protective equipment, positioning of client, removal of accessories. Benefits of UV light on the skin: Suppression of psoriasis, seborrhoea, acne. 12 UV30450

Outcome 2: Be able to provide UV tanning treatments Products for tanning: Tan accelerator lotion, sunbed cleaner, UV sunbed or cubicle. Products for skin preparation: Skin cleansing product, removal of perfumes, deodorants, make-up tan accelerator lotion, sanitising solution and sterilising solution, removal of jewellery. Equipment for application: UV sunbed or UV cubicle, maintenance log, tubes replaced when appropriate, follow codes of practice for sunbeds, ensure clients do not exceed recommended session, electrical, safety testing, clean towel. Disposable equipment: Panties must be disposed of as clinical waste, foot soles, paper towel, goggles. Selection process: Choice of method based on specific client needs and observed condition of the skin. Contra-actions: Skin irritation, skin allergies, heat rash, erythema, burning, blistering, uneven pigmentation, nausea, fainting, prickly heat, urticaria, eye disorders, photo ageing, skin cancer, cataracts. Evaluation: Reason for evaluation, client expectation, visual, verbal, written feedback, client objectives. Aftercare advice: Moisturising products, showering/bathing advice, exfoliation, product recommendations, wear sunscreen, provide tanning advice leaflet. Treatment technique calculation of session time Fitzpatrick Scale Method: Fair sensitive, burns easily, never tans. Fair burns easily but tans slightly. Medium colouring, burns moderately, tans slowly. Medium colouring, rarely burns, tans immediately. Dark pigmented, rarely burns and tans immediately. Dark deeply pigmented, never burns and tans immediately. Medication: Some medicines may cause hypersensitivity to UV rays and cause severe eczema. Radiation and electromagnetic spectrum: Position of the rays within the spectrum and the effect on the body tissues, UVA/UVB/UVC, production of melanin, tanning process, relationship between distance, time, and the distance of the lamp from the client, the basic structure of the electromagnetic spectrum in relation to ultraviolet light, different types of ultraviolet rays and their effects, inverse square law.
