Overview This unit is about improving and maintaining facial skin condition using a variety of treatments. These treatments include: skin exfoliation, skin warming, extraction, facial massage, mask treatments and the use of facial products. Such treatments must be successfully provided to a range of clients with a variety of skin types and conditions. To carry out this unit you will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene throughout your work. You will also need to maintain your personal appearance and good communication with the client. The main outcomes of the unit are: 1. Consult with the client 2. Prepare for the treatment 3. Plan the treatment 4. Improve and maintain skin condition 5. Complete the treatment SKABT4v2 1

Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 Consult with the client by: P1.1 using consultation techniques in a polite and friendly manner to determine the client s treatment plan P1.2 discussing and agreeing the service and outcomes that are acceptable to your client and meet their needs P1.3 maintaining the client s modesty and privacy at all times P1.4 establishing and recording the client s current skin care routine P1.5 recognising contra-indications and taking the necessary action. P2 Prepare for the treatment by: P2.1 preparing the work environment to meet legal, hygiene and treatment P2.2 ensuring your personal appearance meets accepted industry and organisational requirements P2.3 making sure that environmental conditions are suitable for the treatment and P2.4 helping the client into a comfortable and relaxed position for the treatment P2.5 sanitising your hands prior to treatments P2.6 cleansing the client s skin superficially P2.7 removing the client s make-up according to the needs of the treatment P2.8 performing a skin analysis on the client to identify skin type, condition and any contra-indications specific to the treatment. P3 Plan the treatment by: P3.1 discussing and recommending suitable treatments and products for the client s skin type and condition P3.2 discussing and establishing the treatment plan with the client P3.3 selecting suitable equipment and materials for the treatment P3.4 making sure the preparation of the client meets the agreed treatment plan. P4 Improve and maintain skin condition by: P4.1 maintaining hygiene and safety throughout the treatment P4.2 using facial products and equipment correctly and following manufacturers' instructions P4.3 using suitable techniques to deep cleanse the client s skin P4.4 checking that the skin is left clean and free of all traces of makeup prior to further treatment P4.5 selecting and using a suitable skin exfoliation technique relevant to the client s needs P4.6 selecting and using a suitable skin warming technique relevant to the client s needs P4.7 carrying out any necessary extraction without discomfort to the SKABT4v2 2

P5 client and with minimal damage to the skin P4.8 checking that the massage medium used is suitable for the client's skin, type and condition P4.9 providing and adapting massage techniques to meet the needs of the client P4.10 applying mask treatments evenly and neatly, ensuring that the area to be treated is covered P4.11 removing masks after a recommended time and without discomfort to the client P4.12 ensuring that the skin is left clean, toned and suitably moisturised P4.13 ensuring your own posture and position minimises fatigue and the risk of injury whilst working. Complete the treatment by: P5.1 checking that the finished result is to the client s satisfaction and meets the agreed treatment plan P5.2 ensuring treatments are cost effective and are carried out within a commercially viable time. P5.3 ensuring client records are up-to-date, accurate, easy to read and complete P5.4 giving treatment advice and recommendations accurately and constructively P5.5 disposing of waste materials safely and correctly P5.6 leaving the work area and equipment in a condition suitable for further treatments.
