Friedrich Air Conditioning is a privately held company that manufactures commercial-grade room air conditioners and specialty cooling products for residential and light commercial 1 applications. Freedom Red Roses are grown in rich, volcanic soil producing the long, sturdy stems and larger heads for which these roses are famous. These roses are popularly used for wedding 2 flowers, special events, fund-raisers and other floral decor. Swans reach sexual maturity between 4 and 7 years of age. However, they form socially monogamous pair bonds from as early as 20 months that last for many years, and in some 3 cases, these bonds can last for life. In community building, the third place is the social setting separate from the two usual social environments of home (the first place) and the workplace (the second place). Examples of third places are salons, clubs or parks. Third places are important for civil 4 society, democracy, civic engagement and establishing feelings of a sense of place. Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that crashed on July 17th, 2014 after being shot down, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The Boeing 777-200ER airliner lost contact about 50 km (31 mi) from the Ukraine Russia border and crashed near Torez in Donetsk Oblast, 5 Ukraine, 40 km (25 mi) from the border. Papier-mâché was used in a number of firearms as a material to form sabots. A sabot is a device used in a firearm or cannon to fire a projectile. Despite the extremely high pressures and temperatures in the bore of a firearm, papier-mâché proved strong enough to contain the pressure, and push a sub-caliber projectile out of the barrel with a high degree of accuracy. In the Civil War, papier-mâché sabots were used in everything from small 6 arms to artillery. Solitaire, also called patience, is any of various games played by one person with one or more regular 52 card decks, part or all of which are dealt out according to a given 7 pattern, the object being to arrange the cards in a predetermined manner. Victory Blindness is a term used to express the phenomenon where, in an activist setting, we focus on small, incremental victories and allow them to blind us to the fundamental problems that are left unsolved. These small victories enthrall and satiate us and we lose our gumption. As a result, we stop short of achieving our larger goals. 8 1 Friedrich A/C units can be found in almost every apartment building in any neighborhood, rich or poor in New York City. Starting in 2011, Daniel Sullivan and I would go out late at night and make rubbings of the metal grills that people carve into. We started pronouncing the brand Fried-Rich. I began systematically removing logo placards from Friedrich air conditioners around the city. 2 Before I moved to New York I was a hopeless romantic and would send roses to women I was dating. I think it always turned them off. 3 When I was a child, I stayed at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando. The hotel is famous for its flock of ducks that march through the hotel once a day; their march culminates in a swim in the marble fountain in the center of the lobby. 4 New York does a good job of removing non-market oriented, positive third places, replacing them with bars or places where escapist social behavior takes place. 5 I was in LA last summer when the flight crashed. Kristen Van Deventer showed me the New York Times coverage of crash, specifically a photograph set in lush greenery and depicting plastic sheeting draped over a corpse; the plastic sheeting had accumulated dew and a single rose was placed on top of it. My roommate Taylor Adams is an editor at the Times and I later procured this image from him. 6 In 4th grade art class I made a papier-mâché duck head constructed with a large soup can and balloon. My brother maintains that it s the best artwork I ve ever made and keeps it in his living room. In the summer of 2012, I was frustrated with the lack of hand or craft in my work. I took a trip back to Chicago. I woke up on my brother s couch and this duck head was staring at me. Shortly thereafter, I began using papier-mâché. 7 Starting in 2012, when I worked for Andrew Kreps, I would routinely use my subway commute to play solitaire on my phone. I became disgusted at how easy it was for me to go blank. I started noticing how many other people were also playing solitaire during their commute. 8 I heard this term first while listening to NPR or Democracy Now! while at a job this spring. It seemed to aptly describe the kind of conservative attitude held by myself and my peers in New York in the face of some of the most problematic issues presented by recent history.
