Lot: 1 51st (2nd Yorkshire, West Riding) Kingâ s Own Light Infantry George IV Officerâ s shoulder belt plate circa 1821. A very fine and rare example. Seeded gilt rope edged rectangular plate mounted with silver crowned laurel wreath and lower â Ich Deanâ scroll; within the wreath, a strung bugle with â 51â between the cords. Reverse retains two hooks at the top and two studs at the bottom. A little polishing to silver high points otherwise VGC. (Parkyn 407) In 1821, the facings were changed from grass-green to blue on account of the regiment 105th (Madras Light Infantry) Regiment Officerâ s Victorian receiving the title â The Kingâ s Own Light Infantryâ ; Officers were instructed to wear embroidery instead of lace. On the junction of the wreath, a scroll inscribed used for State occasions, LevŽes and Balls. â Peninsula. Reverse retains both original horizontal loops and all four wires behind the crown. Top pearl to crown absent otherwise VGC. During the period this plate was worn, 51st saw service in Van Diemanâ s Land, Burmah and India. Embarked for Malta and the Crimea in the summer of 1855 but the fall of Sebastopol negated the final leg of the journey and it remained in Malta. Provenance. Major Ken Clarke Collection. Within a crowned oak wreath, the old Arms of Warrington flanked by flags bearing the Arms of Lancashire and the Arms of Cheshire. Complete with backing plate and two screw posts to reverse. VGC. Formed at Warrington 16th September, 1859; Sept 1865 9th Admin. Bn. created; 1880 Consolidated as 9th Corps becoming 1st VB South Lancashire Regt. by General Order 78 in July of 1886. A fine and scarce die-stamped silvered facetted Maltese cross surmounted by a gilt die-cast crown. Mounted on the cross a circlet â Lancashire Rifle Volunteersâ with â 8â to mirrored centre. Three screw posts to reverse. VGC. Raised 4th August 1859 at Bury as Bury Rifle Corps and recognised as 8th Lancashire Rifle Vols. on 22nd. On Friday 1st July 1881 became a VB of the Lancashire Fusiliers being redesignated as 1st VB on 1st February 1883. Silvered crowned star mounted with rich gilt laurel wreath with scroll inscribed â Salfordâ on its base. Gilt Sphinx on Egypt tablet to centre. Two screw posts to reverse. VGC. Formed at Salford 5th March 1860. Renumbered 17th in 1880 and in 1881 joined Manchester Regiment as one of its VBâ s. However in March 1886 transferred to Lancashire Fusiliers as its 3rd VB. A fine example worn firstly on the 1847-54 shako and then on the short lived 1855-57 helmet. Large die-stamped brass crowned laurel wreath, lined centre with fouled anchor in relief.
