Our Charities Wealden Works! Wealden Works! originally known as Heathfield Works! is the first rural employment initiative and was designed and developed by The Heathfield Partnership Trust. The programme originally depended on financial and gift in kind donations to continue to support local young people to develop social and employment skills, motivation and self confidence, so they can move forward with their lives into work, training or further education. Earlier this year, Wealden Works! were appointed, by Skills UK, to provide courses for young people on an ongoing basis. This will enable a large degree of self-funding in the future, although donations will still be required. The focus of the voluntary programme is on young people securing employment to the wider benefit of local employers and the Heathfield and surrounding community. Uniquely following the intensive training 10 week employability period staff stay with the graduates for at least a further year. This ensures any future doubts or anxieties are covered by Mentors they know and trust. In the last 5½ years 214 young people have enrolled on a Wealden Works! course and the 86% success rate achieved is better than any other scheme in the country including those in urban areas. Apart from moving the young people into further education, a feature of the Wealden Works! Programme is the partnership between local businesses and community groups to ensure that the work experience and job placement element works for both young people and employers. Then, once participants move into work, Wealden Works! continues to support them and their employers for at least a year to ensure that success is long term. The aim of Wealden Works! is to help young people to develop the sense of responsibility and self-discipline they need to help them deal with the barriers that prevent them from getting a job. During the programme, participants receive a mix of both personal and work skills training, including CV and interview preparation, job hunting awareness, and personal marketing. The group also contribute to projects which add value to the Wealden environment and community; these challenges require project planning and management of budgets, so that participants learn key workplace skills such as problem solving, teamwork and communication. Wealden Works! has enjoyed outstanding success with the young people it has already helped on this intensive ten-week programme. All participants have achieved individual goals and the programme has received glowing testimonials from employers, families, local police, the Chamber of Commerce and the participants themselves. Remember, there is no more valuable a stepping stone for young people than the opportunity for taster days work experience and on-the-job training particularly in the current economic situation. This makes it even more important that Wealden Works! is able to continue to deliver this programme. For further details contact Lisa Crozier: 07434 496651. lcrozier@wealdenworks.co.uk

Heathfield - The Town In Heathfield, Spring begins when the Old Lady lets the cuckoo out of her basket at the Heffle Cuckoo Fair. As the central market town of the largest parish in England, Heathfield encompasses the villages of Waldron, Cross in Hand, Broad Oak, Cade Street, Old Heathfield and Punnets Town. With a population of around 12,000 the parish is surrounded by some of the best countryside East Sussex has to offer and the town retains a lively yet tranquil country atmosphere enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. The town s commercial centre is focused on the High Street where a mixture of shops and businesses range from national outlets and a high concentration of independents such as butchers, bakers, delis, craft and antique shops whose outside displays add charm and character. The shopping experience is further enhanced by longstanding twice weekly regular markets held every Tuesday and Saturday morning throughout the year. A Tuesday market offers a fine selection of stalls selling fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and bakery products alongside general provisions, second hand tools and ironmongery and up to 55 general and antiques and collectibles stalls. The Saturday market has fewer antiques. A Farmer's Market held on the third Saturday of each month provides opportunities for buying local produce. A general auction is hosted weekly by Watsons at a dedicated salesroom in Heathfield. Every Tuesday a variety of lots go under the hammer from small household items and ornaments to garden furniture and machinery. Annual events include the famous Heathfield Show, an agricultural show which is held each spring, and the Le Marché French Fair held on August Bank holiday Monday. Heathfield has a selection of primary schools and a community college offering secondary and sixth form education as well as many adult learning courses and clubs. The town also has good facilities for recreation with the Leisure centre and outdoor spaces such as the skate park, Millennium Green, Jubilee Park and the Cuckoo Trail. A lively and active sporting and social community enjoy a wide range of clubs and societies that cater for all ages and interests and major town events bring the locals together in celebration.
