FACE SHAPE: ROUND Kelly can pull off this wavy, medium-length style because it has lots of layering and thinning in the ends to avoid adding extra heaviness at her chin. Kirsten Dunst s short bob style has been enhanced by adding ice blonde tones a center part and long shaped layers away from the chin. This breaks up the fullness of a round face. Kate Bosworth s hair was cut into a solid, blunt finish with a side part, a bit of height on top and a little side swept bangs to camouflage her wide forehead and make her face appear more oval. CHARACTERISTICS: If you have a round face shape, you will have a round chin and proportions that are equal in height and length just like Kelly Clarkson or Kirsten Dunst. A round face shape will have the following characteristics. Your face is pretty much the same width and length, creating a circle like shape. Your forehead and jawline are approximately the same width. Your chin is rounded in shape with no hard lines or angles. Your jawline is round and full in shape. Your forehead is wide and round at your hairline. Your face is widest at your cheekbones. 3
HAIRSTYLES YOU SHOULD TRY: Hairstyles with height and fullness at the crown will give the illusion of a narrower face shape, particularly those short in length. Longer hairstyles or ones that are kept close to the cheeks with no width will look better. Middle parts are great for creating the illusion of narrow length. No bangs are the ideal as the focus point becomes the bridge of the nose, creating a more oval shape. If bangs are used they should be swept across, or in the case of solid bangs, only where there is substantial height on the top. Short hairstyles are great and do not suffocate small round faces. Your chin is rounded in shape with no hard lines. Your jawline has a slight roundness to it. Your forehead is slightly broader than your jaw. Your face is widest at your cheekbones. HAIRSTYLES YOU SHOULD TRY: If your face is oval then your hairstyling options are pretty much endless and anything will look good on you! To really enhance your great face shape, consider adding layers that hang around your cheekbones, lips or chin which will draw attention to your face and provide you with a pretty frame. A short hairstyle (pictured left) is a great tapered cut that shapes nicely around the face to bring out the best in your versatile shape. The great deep side hair part, sweeping bangs and shiny straight length makes this the perfect understated hairstyle for any occasion, and the perfect low-key option to give your face all the attention. If your hair is medium length then you can really play it up with a variety of options that will match and enhance your oval face shape. One such option is a layered bob hairstyle (pictured right) that will frame your face. The addition of heavy cut bangs will bring drama and attention to your eyes and have the added advantage of working well with your face shape because the width and length won't be overwhelmed by such show-stopping bangs. FACE SHAPE: SQUARE OR RECTANGLE Angelina Jolie has a strong and straight jawline with a broad forehead. To soften her sharp angles her hairstyle has long locks dressed into loose waves that start close to the jawline. The volume overall is also kept to a minimum. Aisha Tyler s soft shaped layers have been cut through the sides and back to shape her square face. Rachel McAdams s ( Sherlock Holmes, Midnight in Paris) heavy bangs are slicked down to frame the top and the really soft waves makes this style great to balance out a long or narrow face. Anne Hathaway s long golden layers cut around the edges help soften her pronounced jawline. CHARACTERISTICS: A square face shape requires haircuts, styles and makeup that will help to soften the strong angles that are the trademark of the shape. Celebrities with square face shapes have great hairstyle options to soften their angular facial structures. To make wide foreheads and jaw lines appear narrower, they'll wear deep side parts or soft bangs, and choose face-softening textured looks like tousled curls or piece-y cuts. 6
If you have a square face shape then you'll recognize the following characteristics: Your face is very equal in regards to length and width. Your forehead and jawline are a similar width in appearance. Your chin is noticeably square and/or flat. Your jawline is strong, broad and obviously square in appearance. Your cheeks and the sides of your face are straight. Your forehead is broad and most likely straight around your hairline. Your face is widest at your cheekbones. HAIRSTYLES YOU SHOULD TRY: If your face is square hairstyles with wispy bangs and height at the top of the head will draw attention up and away from the strong square jaw line. A short hairstyle can flatter a square face by using curls (as pictured right) to create and promote a round appearance for the face. If your hair is long then you already have the advantage of creating the illusion of length for your short square face, but you can certainly take it up a notch by adding some fantastic looking curls. Heavy and over-extended layers (pictured left) through the back and sides allow hair to fall into its natural shape, accentuating its waves. The waves, or the curved nature of the look, will soften a strong and heavy jaw line. The bangs, although a little too short, are swept to one side and create the best shape. FACE SHAPE: HEART OR DIAMOND Reese Witherspoon s medium to long layers cut around the front and side add fullness around the chin and the center part balances out the broad forehead. Keri Hilson s two-toned layered bob balances out her narrow chin and the jagged bangs breakup her wide forehead. Jennifer Lopez s amazing locks have layers added to the mid-lengths to ends. The front layers add shape under the jaw-line and the center part breaks up the wide forehead. CHARACTERISTICS: A heart face shape has a narrow jawline paired with either wide cheekbones or a wide forehead. A pointy chin is also a trademark of a heart shaped face. This face shape requires haircuts, styles and makeup that will help to flatter and minimize the width through the forehead and bring balance to jawline and chin. If you have a heart face shape then you'll recognize the following characteristics: Your face is longer than it is wide and has a wide width. Your forehead and jawline are a similar width in appearance. Your chin is noticeably pointed. Your cheek line and the sides of your face taper into your jawline. 8
Your forehead is wide and round at your hairline. Your face is widest at your forehead but your cheekbones are also wide and pronounced. HAIRSTYLES YOU SHOULD TRY: Hairstyles that are chin length or longer that have plenty of interest via curls, flips or fullness through the bottom will suit you best, and balance out the narrowness of the lower half of your face with the fullness through the top half. A short hairstyle that is great for a heart face shape is a nice bold bob. A bob hairstyle that is cut to chin level and shaped around the face (pictured left) will slim down the wider parts of a heart shape (the cheekbones) and accent the narrowest part of the face (the pointy chin) to create a flattering look. For those with mid-length hair and a heart face shape, straight locks that are silky smooth create a very simple yet stunning style (pictured right). Another great midlength option is to use lots of large curls to draw attention down below your jaw area and fill in the gaps with the illusion of width. Side-swept bangs complete this look and do an excellent job of concealing the wider area of the face and forehead. A long hairstyle that will work for a heart face shape doesn't have to be more complicated than a haircut that involves some well-placed hair layers (pictured left). The jagged layers through the ends of the hair flatter the chin and jaw line area, and the addition of the deep side hair part and the styling of the bangs over the majority of the wide forehead give this long look a great balance and finish.
