MUSEUM DER KULTUREN MuseuM der Kulturen Basel WHAT NEXT? March 22, 2013 March 30, 2014 How did the colonization of the Amazon region change the significance of things for the resident populations? Based on museum holdings that have served indigenous representatives and scholars over the last years as important cultural resources, the exhibition follows up the history of the Basel Amazon collection between 1950 and 2010, addressing historical as well as current issues and events. It traces the biographies of individual things on their journey from South America to Switzerland. Some of them are plain objects, others are things that are ascribed subjectivity, either permanently or on a temporary basis. These things are believed to have a life of their own, very similar to us human beings. March 21, 2013, 6.30 p.m. Opening What's next? Insurrection of Things in the Amazon Public opening of the exhibition and free entry!

March 24, 2013, 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon First Guided Tour The Hidden Life of Things People in the Amazon region have a different way of treating artefacts. Many objects are said to have a life cycle that is similar to that of humans. They are born in a ritual act, play an active role in economic, social, and religious relations, and are destroyed at the end when they have served their cause. Together with Alex Brust, curator of the exhibition What Next? The Insurrection of Things in the Amazon, we trace the biographies of objects. April 7, 2013, 11.00 a.m to 12.00 noon Guided Tour The Occult Life of Things April 7, 2013, 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. Workshop for Kids Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds We make an ornament from feathers, Indian style, a ribbon you can wear on your arm, in your hair, or around the neck. However worn, it makes you look smart according to your own personal style. With Regina Mathez April 11, 2013, 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Looking over the Shoulder of a Restorer Watch our specialists restoring objects in the exhibition What next?, from 10.00 to 17.00. Learn about the techniques, the materials and the tricks they use to restore old or damaged artefacts to preserve them for the future. With Claudia Geissmann, restorer

This forces Switzerland to question its role in the post-colonial globalized world. The lecture series, organized in cooperation with the Volkshochschule beider Basel, sheds light on Switzerland s multifaceted relations with the Amazon region. Con Alexander Brust. > em Portugues Entrada October 20, 2013, 11.00 to 12.00 noon Lecture Amazonia News from our Future? Material things and living beings are interlinked in myriad ways. Both sides respect each other and negotiate the terms of their joint existence. The Amazonian cosmos provides a good example for this mode of co-existence. Moreover, is this area a kind of laboratory where future models of global interaction could be tested? With Georg Grünberg, anthropologist, University of Vienna.
