MUSEUM DER KULTUREN MuseuM der Kulturen Basel WHAT NEXT? March 22, 2013 March 30, 2014 How did the colonization of the Amazon region change the significance of things for the resident populations? Based on museum holdings that have served indigenous representatives and scholars over the last years as important cultural resources, the exhibition follows up the history of the Basel Amazon collection between 1950 and 2010, addressing historical as well as current issues and events. It traces the biographies of individual things on their journey from South America to Switzerland. Some of them are plain objects, others are things that are ascribed subjectivity, either permanently or on a temporary basis. These things are believed to have a life of their own, very similar to us human beings. March 21, 2013, 6.30 p.m. Opening What's next? Insurrection of Things in the Amazon Public opening of the exhibition and free entry!
March 24, 2013, 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon First Guided Tour The Hidden Life of Things People in the Amazon region have a different way of treating artefacts. Many objects are said to have a life cycle that is similar to that of humans. They are born in a ritual act, play an active role in economic, social, and religious relations, and are destroyed at the end when they have served their cause. Together with Alex Brust, curator of the exhibition What Next? The Insurrection of Things in the Amazon, we trace the biographies of objects.
