DESIGNER BIO Christina Zuzu Kim studied fashion design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and ran her own high-end women s atelier in Chicago before working as a designer for Phoebe Couture (division of Kay Unger) and Mary McFadden, where she advanced to head designer within one year. The daughter of the former South Korean Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ms. Kim was raised around the world and is fluent in several languages. Trained as a classical pianist, she is presently a student of performance at the Juilliard School. Kim s sensitivity towards different cultures as well as her passion for music brings a unique perspective to her design sensibility, making ZUZU KIM sophisticated yet fresh and universally appealing, the way music communicates without boundaries. COLLECTION RELEASE Christina Zuzu Kim presented her debut ZUZU KIM Spring/Summer 2012 collection on September 14, 2011 in the Lotus Room at the Mandarin Oriental New York. Trained as a classical pianist, Kim s collection was inspired by music, the drama of performance, the energy generated by emotion, and the convergence of different, yet harmonious elements. Aptly themed Concerto, the collection reinterprets a musician s stage attire from the wildly feminine conductor coat with tie sleeves to a washed silk and organza pleated tuxedo shirt with an unexpected tongue-ring clasp, to a silvery, washed silk evening dress with an underskirt that can be draped, reminiscent of coat tails over a piano bench. As a performer herself, Kim started by making her own striking and romantic clothing for her performances. Using the finest silks, organzas, cashmeres, and stretch leather in shades of muted gray and silver with a contrapunto of black, Kim combines unusual textures to create a unified statement - silver laminated tweed, distressed and partially melted metal sequins with stretch leather hand-cut scallops work in concert. The scallop details in the collection are a two-dimensional abstraction of the usual romantic ruffles that are so ubiquitous on stage. Kim combines precision and attention to detail with creative flair, exquisite design, and dedication to the highest quality. Master tailoring results in a collection that emphasizes and compliments the female form. Day and evening glamor take center stage with exquisitely rendered separates, cocktail dresses, tuxedos, and an evening gown that embody seemingly opposing concepts such as femininity and masculinity, tradition and modernity, formality and playfulness.
