Preservative Guidelines by Kolbjorn Borseth Revised and substantially updated May 2013 Aromantic 2011-2013 Free for Customers and Subscribers Please keep checking or updates to this document as we get closer to the 11th July 2013 final compliance date for the new European Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

2 May 2013 PRESERVATIVE 12 An innovative, soft, more natural Preservative. INCI: Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. In the past I have personally recommended using a dosage of 0.6% and through all of these years this is the dosage I have used on all of our courses (and as you know, it is not always easy to maintain laboratory hygienic standards on courses when a number of people are working in a small area not normally reserved for this type of work) and in our own previous range of base and ready made products, all with no problem. Dosages on the safe side If, like us, you have had no problems using Preservative 12 at a dosage of 0.6%, then it is up to you to decide whether you want to increase to 0.8-1% concentration to be on the safe side due to new EU cosmetic legislation, I recommend that you challenge test your products if you stick to a dosage of 0.6%. New guidelines sent to me by the German producer of Preservative 12 in 2010 recommended that you use above 0.7% concentration in products, and between 0.8-1% to be on the safe side. Preservative 12 can be heated up to 80 C in Water Stage or added in Third Stage (under 40 C ) in products that require heating (keep ph less than 12). WE SUCCESSFULLY CHALLENGE TESTED (WITH 1% PRESERVATIVE 12): Active Cream 1 from or Intermediate Day (contains herbal infusions) Dry Skin Cream (as made on our Beginner s Day) Eye Gel, Aloe Vera Gel (Aromantic s Base Gel). Please see my blog post entitled Formulating for the Future, as well as my special report containing all the recipes and challenge test results for these and more products this report can be found in the membership area on our website - http://www.aromantic.co.uk/members.htm. Preservative 12 Dosage for Products containing Herbal Infusions or Decoctions I have always recommended that you use 1% in preparations containing herbal infusions or decoctions, and after discussing this with the producers, they agree that 1% should work but that you should test your own products. Update May 2013: In our latest, challenge tests we used 1.1% when products contained these herbal infusions and/or decoctions. Preservative 12 should not be used in the following aqueous products: EXFOLIATORS/SCRUBS (EMULSIONS SUCH AS CREAMS.LOTIONS); FACE MASKS/PRODUCTS WITH CLAYS; ANTI- WRINKLE EMULSIONS SUCH AS CREAMS/LOTIONS WITH LARGE AMOUNT OF ACTIVE INGREDIENTS IN THEM Aromantic s recent challenge tests show that Preservative 12 is the softest of all three of our so-called more natural Preservatives. So, an aqueous emulsion-based exfoliator/scrub (cream with exfoliating grains in it) with 1.1% Preservative 12 and a Face Mask/Cleanser with clay and containing 1.1.% Preservative 12 and an Anti- Wrinkle Cream with many actives & containing 1.1.% Preservative 12 in Stage 3 failed their challenge tests. Other challenges to the soft Preservative 12 Using food products in your cosmetics e.g. Your own homemade ground almonds in an exfoliating cream, etc. The more active ingredients one has in a product, the more challenging it is to preserve it for e.g. An antiwrinkle cream with too many actives in it. + 4 4 ( 0 ) 1 3 0 9 6 9 6 9 0 0 w w w. a r o m a n t i c. c o. u k Page 2

3 May 2013 PRESERVATIVE ECO A broad spectrum preservation system based on a combination of ingredients that have global acceptance INCI Name: Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerine, Sorbic Acid What is it? A broad spectrum preservation system based on a combination of ingredients that is both ECOCERT and COSMOS approved. (Cosmos is a European organic standard has been created by an alliance of 5 of Europe's leading organic certifiers: The Soil Association UK; BDIH - Germany; Cosmebio France; Ecocert France; ICEA. Preservative Eco meets ECOCERT standards for use in natural and organic skin and hair care products [Please note: it is our supplier that hold the Ecocert certification, not Aromantic]. Its four components, Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerine, Sorbic Acid, are all well accepted in a wide range of personal care products. This novel composition of this antimicrobial blend offers broad spectrum protection in a diverse range of products, against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast and moulds. It is clear liquid with a mild smell. Natural Odour Reducer may be needed for fragrance-free and fragrance-sensitive formulations. Benefits: Non-paraben, non-formaldehyde, non-isothiazolone based preservative system. Has wide global regulatory acceptance. Broad spectrum activity on bacteria, yeast and moulds. Suitable for use in oil-in-water, water-in-oil and anhydrous (non-water containing) formulas so compatible with a wide range range of skin, hair and sun care formulations. Safe to use in products with a wide range of ph values (3-8). number of drops, grams and % of Preservative Eco per 100ml/g of product: 20 drops using small 0.7mm dropper/ OR 1g/ OR 1%. Preservative Eco Dosage for certain aqueous emulsions If product contains herbal decoctions or infusions/or equeous exfoliators/scrubs and anti-wrinkle creams containing many active ingredients - add 22 drops using small 0.7mm dropper/or 1.1g/ OR 1.1%. Maximum Dosage of Preservative Eco Because of the high quantity of Benzyl Alcohol in Preservative Eco and to meet the European Cosmetic Directive standards, the maximum amount use in products should be 1.15%. Preservative Eco should not be used in the following aqueous products: FACE MASKS/CLEANSERS (AQUEOUS PRODUCTS) WITH CLAYS Aromantic s recent challenge tests show that in a recipe for a Face Mask/Cleanser with clay and containing 1% Preservative Eco failed its challenge test. Do not use Preservative Eco in aqueous products containing clay e.g. Face masks/cleansers. + 4 4 ( 0 ) 1 3 0 9 6 9 6 9 0 0 w w w. a r o m a n t i c. c o. u k Page 3

4 May 2013 Please see my blog post entitled Formulating for the Future, as well as my Special Report containing all the recipes and challenge test results for these and more products this report can be found in the member s area: http://www.aromantic.co.uk/members.htm You will need to sign up if you haven t yet. How to use Preservative Eco: It is very important that Preservative Eco is added to your recipes for which heating is necessary when the temperature is below 45 C. So the best is to add the preservative in the Third Stage of making creams and lotions. However, every personal care formulation requires special attention. It is always important to ensure that every newly developed or altered formulation be challenge-tested to guarantee proper preservation. When adding Preservative Eco to cold products (i.e. when no heating is required to make the product, make sure you mix it in thoroughly - a hand held electric stick blender may be useful if you find it doesn't mix in correctly. Caution: Due to the Salicylic Acid component in Preservative Eco, do not use it in products for children under 3 years of age, except in rinse-off products such as shampoos, shower gels, etc. Some people with sensitive skin or allergies can also react to Preservative Eco and Preservative 12 may be more appropriate for them. Whilst it is more natural than Preservative 12, Preservative 12 may be more appropriate for some people s skin. Do a skin allergy test before making big batches or buying large quantities of Preservative. Further information about using Preservative Eco Aromantic has challenge-tested 11 products made using 1-1.1% Preservative Eco at Microbiological Consultancy Services and we have the results back from their lab. See my Special Report in Member s Area: http://www.aromantic.co.uk/members.htm You will need to sign up if you haven t yet. WE SUCCESSFULLY CHALLENGE TESTED (WITH 1-1.1% PRESERVATIVE ECO): Aromantic's Active Cream 1 - as taught on our Intermediate Day course and sold by us (1% Preservative Eco) Aromantic's Dry Skin Cream - as taught on Beginner's Day course and sold by us (1% Preservative Eco) Skin Toners - as taught on our Spa Day 1 course (1% Preservative Eco) Eye Gels - similar to the one as taught on our Advanced Day course (1% Preservative Eco) Base Lotion - that Aromantic sells (1% Preservative Eco) Base Bath - sold by us (1% Preservative Eco) Base Shampoo for Dry Hair - as taught on Beginner's Day course and sold by us (1% Preservative Eco) Base Gel with Aloe Vera - that Aromantic sells (1% Preservative Eco) Ginseng Serums - as taught on our Anti-wrinkle course (1.1% Preservative Eco) Exfoliator/Scrubs (Aqueous Emulsions) -(1.1% Preservative Eco) Anti-Wrinkle /Skin Rejuvenating Cream for Dry Sensitive Skin - as taught and made on our anti-wrinkle course contains a lot of actives (1.1% Preservative Eco) They passed the challenge tests to comply with the criteria of the European Pharmacopeia for topical products. 5 May 2013 http://www.aromantic.co.uk/members.htm You will need to sign up if you haven t yet. If you are happy with the preservative you are using I see no reason to change preservatives. If you want a natural preservative to use in products containing detergents (shampoos, foam baths, shower gels, etc) then this Preservative Eco may be the right one for you. PRESERVATIVE K Only works for products with a ph value less than 5.5. INCI name: Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, and Potassium Sorbate A relatively natural Preservative used by green cosmetics companies worldwide, it is a liquid based on Potassium Sorbate and Alcohols. The fungicidal and fungistatic properties of Sorbic Acid (found in the totally natural Potassium Sorbate) form the basis of the effectiveness of Preservative K. Potassium Sorbate is also added for the its qualities of stability and solubility. Preservative K offers a broad, balanced spectrum of effect against bacteria, yeasts and mould fungi. The spectrum of activity is supplemented and balanced by the use of Benzyl Alcohol (effective against gram-positive bacteria) and Phenoxyethanol (effective against gram-negative bacteria). Add to products under 80 C. number of drops, grams and % of Preservative K per 100ml/g of product: 12-15 drops/0.5-0.6g/0.5-0.6% Preservative K Dosage for Products containing Herbal Infusions or Decoctions I have always recommended that you use 1% in preparations containing herbal infusions or decoctions. Preservative K Dosage for following aqueous products: EXFOLIATORS/SCRUBS (EMULSIONS SUCH AS CREAMS.LOTIONS); FACE MASKS/PRODUCTS WITH CLAYS; ANTI- WRINKLE EMULSIONS SUCH AS CREAMS/LOTIONS WITH LARGE AMOUNT OF ACTIVE INGREDIENTS IN THEM These types of products can be challenging for successful preservation. I recommended that you use 1.5% Preservative K in products of this nature. WE SUCCESSFULLY CHALLENGE TESTED (WITH 1.5% PRESERVATIVE K): A Face Mask/Cleanser with clay Anti-Wrinkle /Skin Rejuvenating Cream for Dry Sensitive Skin - as taught and made on our anti-wrinkle course - contains a lot of actives How to use Preservative K: It will only work in cosmetic products with a skin-friendly ph of less than 5.5. As a result of the Potassium Sorbate in the formulation, Preservative K raises the ph of the product. After it has been incorporated into the cosmetic product (Water or Third Stage), the ph value of the product therefore has to be adjusted down. After having added all of your Raw Materials, Essential Oils and Preservative K, then test the ph. If over 5.5, add from 0.3-0.5% Lactic Acid and retest the ph. When under a ph of 5.5, your products will keep for 1.5-3 years, depending on the product and how you store it. When testing a Cream, smear the Litmus Paper with the Cream and scrape it off after 1 minute to reveal the ph. If you have a liquid product e.g. Shampoos, simply dip the litmus paper in for 30 seconds and the colour will be easily revealed. + 4 4 ( 0 ) 1 3 0 9 6 9 6 9 0 0 w w w. a r o m a n t i c. c o. u k Page 5

6 May 2013 We sell a simple test kit We sell a simple test set that costs a few pounds to test bacteria, yeasts and fungus in cosmetic products. It is called Microcount Combi. Please note that this is not a vegetarian product. For full description or to order, click: http://www.aromantic.co.uk/buy-mikrocount-combi-uk.htm If you want to use a microbiological testing company, you can contact Angus Malcolm at Microbiological Consultancy Services, who are offering Aromantic customers a special price. Their website is http:// www.mcs.uk.net Please contact them directly - you get a special rate if you are an Aromantic customer. Very Important Information The best method for measuring the Preservatives when adding to your products is to weigh them on a very good scale that weighs down to 0.1 grams. If you still decide to continue using drops to measure our Preservatives, we now recommend using different quantities depending on which of our Preservatives you are using in your products. In our recipes that you may have from old Newsletters, our books and recipe brochures, you ll often find that we don t say which preservative to use, we simply say x number of drops of Preservative in the recipe. As I mentioned before, you need to decide how much of a Preservative you will put into your own products, but these are my new recommendations. If you have old recipes, I suggest in most cases (unless it agrees it with the dosages in this table, that you ignore the number of drops or volume recommended and use my current recommendations as a guideline. See the page 7 for the table. Conversion Table for Aromantic s Preservatives 1 gram of Aromantic Preservative Approximate no. of drops* Density/Specific Gravity (grams per cubic centimetre) Preservative Eco =approx. 20 drops 1.018-1.118 at 21 Celsius Preservative 12 = approx. 25 drops 1.09g/cm 3 at 20 Celsius Preservative K = approx. 25 drops 1.105g/cm 3 at 20 Celsius Parabens (Aromantic Blend) = approx. 25 drops 1.125g/cm 3 at 25 Celsius *NB Drops refers to drops from the bottles our Preservatives are supplied to you in. The best is always to weigh the Preservatives with accurate scales! So, generally 10 grams of these Preservatives will give you a smaller volume (approximately 10% less) i.e. 10 grams = about 9 millilitres of Preservative, so 1gram of preservative = about 0.9 millilitres. As temperature affects the viscosity of the Preservatives, measuring by drops or millilitres (volume) is not as accurate as measuring by grams (weight). It is best therefore to keep your Preservatives at room temperature (20 Celsius) and remember that the drops in the conversion table refer to the amount coming out of Aromantic s glass dropper bottles with large dropper lids and not someone else s droppers as these can vary so much. I have always advised that measuring on a very good scale is the most accurate. + 4 4 ( 0 ) 1 3 0 9 6 9 6 9 0 0 w w w. a r o m a n t i c. c o. u k Page 6

Summary After all of these challenge tests I have found that Preservative 12 fails the most when it is challenged by exfoliators, clays or too many active in third stage but if you don t have these ingredients/conditions in your products I recommend it as it is the 'softest' of our preservatives so far. In addition, Preservative 12 is the preservative that seems to has the fewest skin reactions to it, so I recommend you continue with it but see the restrictions placed on its use. Preservative Eco seems to land in the middle in terms of its efficiency in the challenge tests, while Preservative K being the most efficient of these three. I have not counted Parabens as I look forward to phasing that out. I hope you have found this information helpful. I wish you every success in making your products!
