Introduction 2012 Sterling Style Academy 3

Introduction The Image Consulting & Personal Styling Industry Your new career in image consulting & personal styling offers incredible opportunities for growth as you define your chosen market and begin to work with new clients. With endless client possibilities you are able to determine your own niche market. This is your business and you set the standards and procedures. However, having a solid understanding of the industry as well as the elements and principles of image, fashion and style will be vital toward your success and differentiate you from the competition. Today, the media, celebrities and a wide variety of style TV shows has made image consulting & personal styling an even more glamorous and exciting profession. Get ready to turn your dreams into reality! 2012 Sterling Style Academy 4

Introduction Advantages of Image Consulting & Personal Styling Your new image consulting & personal styling career offers many advantages including: Variety of Opportunities. If you have a passion for fashion, a keen eye for style, and a sincere desire to impact people's lives for the better, then image consulting & personal styling offers you an array of opportunities. Your talent is sought from individuals seeking style consultations, groups and organizations seeking image professionals for seminars, and companies or larger corporations hiring in-house image consultants. Clients will hire you for your expertise in the following areas : Personal Style And Wardrobe Evaluations Color Analysis Line And Style For Figure Type Wardrobe Planning Closet Analysis Personal Shopping Communications Skills Professional Speech And Communication Training Analysis of Body Language, Posture, Movement Etiquette, Protocol Coaching For Specific Situations Job Interviews Public Appearances, Television, Radio Modeling Instruction Hairstyle, Grooming Makeup, Fragrance Nutrition, Wellness, Diet, Exercise Fashion Show Production 2012 Sterling Style Academy 5

Introduction Advantages of Image Consulting & Personal Styling You are a Valuable Asset. Clients who seek professional image and style training are truly interested in changing and improving their lives - not only their image, but their confidence, competence and self-esteem. They understand they cannot do it alone and seek your expertise on the creative aspect of style, to mix and match a harmonious look that enhances their career or lifestyle. Specific reasons for seeking your services include career advancement, establishing the right first impression and improving upon their dating lives. Therefore, you must listen to their needs and provide them with insightful information (which they sometimes won't want to hear) to do your job and impact their lives for the better. You are well worth the money they invested when their friends, coworkers, and families recognize the improvement in their image and attitude! Image Consulting & Personal Styling is Financially Rewarding. You are a business, and like any new start up, it can take two to three years to begin to fully support yourself on your new career. This is well worth your time investment, because as you develop a larger and more consistent clientele base you can realistically expect to gross $40,000 to $60,000 per year, depending upon your market area. Consultants who target corporations as clients or who advise on niche topics such as cross-cultural communications for international businesses, may earn $100,000+ a year. Image advisors to high-level politicians, celebrities, or media professionals may earn $250,000 or more a year. Determine Your Own Schedule. Will you work full time or part time? Will you take clients on the weekends or during business hours only? Will you work from a home office or establish professional office/studio space? You decide based on your values of career, time management, free time, and financial goals. In many cases, it may be a good idea to start working part time while you maintain full-time employment as you are launching your business. Many image consultants take on part time jobs in related fields to network and to continue honing skills in style, communication and to stay on top of the latest fashion trends. As an image consultant, you set your own working hours to develop the business that is right for you. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 6

Introduction Advantages of Image Consulting & Personal Styling Be Your Own Boss. As an entrepreneur, you control your own business success. Whether you choose to target corporate clients, creative individuals, singles looking for love, men, women, or celebrities, you set the structure and standards for your business. Create unique products and services to distinguish yourself from the competition. Your success depends on your self-discipline, self-motivation, and ability to sell yourself and your services. Develop Your Professional Reputation. Whether image consulting / personal styling / personal shopping is all you've ever dreamed of doing or this is a career change at a key point in your life, you can carve out a successful, life-long career. If you have little experience or are a recent college graduate, consider seeking employment in a related career to gain key experience while you develop your own client base. If you are choosing to leave the corporate world behind to launch your business, utilize your management or team building skills to your advantage. Professionalism will be the key to your success. Your skills in styling and working with people will improve over time and with experience. No matter your age, maturity is always a plus. You will attract like-minded clients through the manner in which you conduct yourself. Using your special skill sets and personal strengths to your advantage will be paramount to your success. Never allow anyone to discourage you because of your age. If you believe in yourself and your abilities, your clients will believe in you. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 7

Introduction Challenges of Image Consulting & Personal Styling You Run the Show. Only you are accountable and responsible for your success and failures. You must be confident in your decisions, take risks, and be prepared to accept the outcomes, whether good or bad. You must be disciplined in your time management, stick to your prioritization of tasks, and stay organized from day to day and month to month. Variable Income. Like any other service industry, image consultants experience peak periods and slower times throughout the year. And like any other entrepreneur, you'll learn that receiving a steady paycheck isn't guaranteed. It is imperative that you devise a realistic and flexible monthly budget enabling you to compare your fixed and variable expenses so you are able to manage your income and set funds aside for the slow periods. These times typically occur during the summer months and right after the holidays. Business is Tied to the Economy. Most individuals deem image consulting & personal styling to be a luxury service that can be expendable when money is tight or during difficult economic situations. On the flip side, however, during economic booms, your client base will increase and they will hire you more frequently. The key is to acquire a repeat clientele base that you can depend on during recessions. Your Image is Your Business. As an image consultant or personal stylist, your friends, family and clients will expect you to be dressed to impress at all times. You are literally a walking billboard for your business so it is important that you look your best most of the time. This means that even if you are just running to the corner market to buy bread and milk, you can still be casual, but even your most causal outfit must still look cohesive by incorporating the elements and principles of design. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 8

Introduction Challenges of Image Consulting & Personal Styling Working on Your Own. Those who consider pursuing a career as an image consultant or personal stylist usually enjoy working with people. However, a good portion of your time will not always be spent working with clients. Believe it or not, most of your time will be allocated toward developing your marketing materials, taking care of administrative work, browsing stores for the latest fashions, researching trends and competition on the internet all of which are often done on your own. Therefore be sure to schedule networking events, lunch appointments with potential clients, and classes at your local Small Business Association or business development centers for inspiration, motivation, and to keep yourself in the company of other successful and like-minded individuals. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 9

Image Is A Powerful Resource 2012 Sterling Style Academy 12

Image Is A Powerful Resource Introduction This section is to be used in conjunction with Chapter 1 of your Wardrobe Strategies book. The following are industry phrases and terminology that you will use to show your clients the importance of image and wardrobe in their lives: Image is a RESOURCE that people use to their advantage Clothing is a basic human NEED The image we project sends NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION messages to those around us Our image and non-verbal messages have UNIVERSAL EFFECTS to cultures across the globe Image is both an art and a science. By incorporating this language into your daily work with your clients, you are communicating your professional training and expertise which results in earning the respect of your clients. Many people are not aware of the image, fashion, or style consulting profession, let alone know there is an entire industry around it. They may not take you seriously at first until you show them just how important image is in a person's professional and personal life by offering concrete examples and evidence. They take for granted the importance of first impressions and that people make snap judgments everyday on the image of others. You will encounter challenges like, Isn t it common sense? I can't believe people pay you to dress them! Who are your clients? This is fine because the universal truth is that people pay manicurists, aestheticians, hair stylists, and plastic surgeons thousands of dollars a year to look good. And these same people will also pay you to help them feel beautiful and confident in their wardrobe. The terminology on the following pages are tools you will learn and use to gain credibility in this industry. The more you start selling the importance of image, the more you will start believing in it s importance and this will translate directly into more clients hiring you for your expertise in projecting a fabulous image. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 13

Introduction to the Principles of Fashion Design and How They Pertain to Image Consulting & Personal Styling 2012 Sterling Style Academy 24

Introduction As you have just learned, image is a powerful resource that you can use to control the effect of your projected image on you and others. The way we look effects the way we think, perceive ourselves, and act, as well as how others react to us. The key to image management is to understand how to utilize clothing as a resource and as wearable pieces of art. Change one aspect of the outfit and you change the entire message. The elements and principles of design that go into creating a piece of artwork such as a painting, sculpture, graphics etc. are the same as the design elements and principles needed to create an artistic piece of clothing. Read Chapter 2 in your Wardrobe Strategies Book and complete the learning module to reinforce the most important information regarding the elements and principles of design. Mastering these core concepts will be essential in your growth and understanding of styling. These elements and principles of design are the foundation to the explanations behind why an outfit looks put together - thus establishing harmony in dress. Understanding and utilizing these principles will enable you to create wearable pieces of art for your clients that are interesting, demonstrate balance, unity, harmony and repetition of design. This will enable you to develop a wardrobe that offers variety and versatility while never being dull, boring, or confusing. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 25

Defining The Elements And Principles Of Fashion Design As an image and style consultant, it is your responsibility to be able understand how the elements of fashion design translate into creating wearable works of art for your clients according to their personal style. The elements of fashion design are: Line Shape Color Texture Pattern The principles of design in which to apply these elements are: Repetition Rhythm Emphasis Harmony and Unity Balance Proportion and Scale 2012 Sterling Style Academy 26

Defining The Elements And Principles Of Fashion Design Master these principles in order to illicit the right response from your target audience. Use these principles to emphasize the client s best physical features and camouflage their problem areas in accordance with their goals and lifestyle. The ability to analyze, deconstruct, and articulate how an ensemble is put together enables you to correct, amplify and re-develop the ensemble if needed. Mastering these elements and principles of design will enable you to evaluate designer's collections - their strengths and weaknesses as well as identify industry trends and changes in the fashion industry. Your understanding of the elements of design is key to your proficiency and credibility as an image and style consultant. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 27

Wardrobe Strategies Book - Review of Chapter 2 Defining the Elements of Design Lines Connect two or more points Can be of varying widths Can be actual or implied - vertical, horizontal, diagonal and contour Enclose and divides space, creating shapes or silhouettes Shape The area or space enclosed by a line The outer edge or silhouette of a garment Can be geometric or organic (floral, paisley) Within a garment might include sleeves, cuffs, pockets, shirt yokes and skirt panels, etc Color Light waves emanate from an object, such as clothing, to create color A specific hue that has 3 properties chroma, intensity, value Colors in the visible hue spectrum include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet Texture The surface quality of fabric Texture can be tactile (real texture) or implied (the way it looks, feels, or sounds if rubbed) Pattern Is an arrangement of lines, shapes, and color printed onto or woven into a fabric 2012 Sterling Style Academy 28

Wardrobe Strategies Book - Review of Chapter 2 Defining the Principles of Design Balance How lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns are used within an area and how they are distributed or grouped within an outfit When balance is achieved, it appears that weight (visual and actual) is evenly distributed from side to side, top to bottom Symmetry is a factor of balance; balance can also be asymmetrical Proportion How lines and shapes divide the outfit into primary and secondary points of emphasis It involves the relationship of one part compared to another in relation to the entire garment and to the body Scale The size relationship of one shape compared to another Relative difference in scale is generally described in terms of small, medium, and large Rhythm Rhythm is achieved when line, shape, color, texture, and pattern are arranged in such a way as to lead the eye around the outfit to a point of emphasis Rhythm is the smooth transition between areas of the outfit to create a cohesive, harmonious look Emphasis The use of line, shape, color, texture, or pattern to create a dominant focal point in an outfit When good emphasis is achieved there is only one dominant focal point in the outfit 2012 Sterling Style Academy 29

Wardrobe Strategies Book - Review of Chapter 2 Defining the Principles of Design Harmony The use of lines, shapes, colors, textures and patterns in repetitious ways to create an appropriate look for the wearer according to their needs, to add interest without being over exaggerated Harmony is achieved in an outfit when all aspects relate to one another, to the occasion, and to the individual s style Unity The outfit is complete, without being over or under accessorized - it is well put together 2012 Sterling Style Academy 30

Comments Study And understand the concepts of creativity and individuality. Every outfit should posses a certain amount of individuality and creativity that makes an outfit unique to someone. It all depends on how you combine the elements and principles of design to create an outfit unique to you or your client. And understand the concepts of reinforcing and countering. As your book states, reinforcing or repetition occurs when an element of design repeats and therefore strengthens or emphasizes, the effect of an existing characteristic For example this photo to the left reinforces the curves of her body As your book states, countering and contrasting occurs when an element of design contrasts and therefore weakens, minimizes, or camouflages the effect of an existing characteristic For example let s say this woman in the photo to the right s body type is tubular/rectangular underneath this coat, the shape of the garment is an hourglass and therefore will counter her tubular body build and give the visual effect that she has more volume/mass to her body. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 31

Comments Study Table 2.2 Elements of Design in your Wardrobe Strategies Book on page 32 Be able to identify what a Receding Element is versus an Advancing Element Be able to identify what types of lines, shapes, colors, textures and patterns are receding versus advancing. Receding elements are Yin traits while Advancing elements are Yang traits Table 2.3 Traits that Reflect Opposites Be able to identify Yin versus Yang physical traits, personality traits, and clothing traits Understanding these traits will help you understand how to dress someone according to their own personal style. Every person has a certain degree of Yin and Yang likes and dislikes within their personal clothing style. It s your responsibility as a consultant to be able to know what their maximum and minimum thresholds are for clothing traits as well as be able to determine how yin vs. yang their physical and personality traits are. If someone has predominantly yang physical and personality traits, it would not behoove you to dress your client in yin clothing traits. The visual message you would have your client communicating to the world through yin clothing traits would be incongruent with their yang physical appearance and personality. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 32

Wardrobe Strategies Book - Review of Chapter 2 Table 2.2 DESIGN ELEMENTS LINE SHAPE COLOR TEXTURE PATTERN - YANG ADVANCING / DOMINANT Straight Angular High Contrast -> Darker/Duller Firm, Taut Smaller, Geometric YIN RECEEDING / SUBORDINANT Curved Rounded Low Contrast -> Lighter/Brighter Soft, Pliable Larger, Rounded, Floral 2012 Sterling Style Academy 33

Comments Study Table 2.3 Traits that Reflect Opposites For example in this photo to the left, this man had predominantly angular features, let s assume he s tall, has sleek hair, has strong dark coloring and therefore his physical traits are more yang. Let s assume his personality is independent, deliberate, firm, decisive, direct, and sophisticated more yang Does his outfit project his yang qualities? No The lines and shapes are curved; they are soft light colors, the fabric is pliable and smooth with subtle contrast and is untailored This outfit would only be appropriate for this man during social occasions where he is trying to project a softer, more approachable look. It s definitely a perfect look for attracting the opposite sex by saying, I m in touch with my kind, caring, nurturing, gentle side. However this outfit does not accurately represent who he is as a person from a physical and personality perspective and would therefore be a liability in the boardroom. This outfit to the immediate left would more accurately project his yang personality and physical traits for the boardroom minus the mess hair. The outfit is tailored, has straight lines, angular shapes, firm fabric, and bold contrast more yang. Note: Keep in mind that when you are creating outfits for your clients, the look should not only be balanced according to the client s personality and physical traits but also project more yin vs. yang in clothing characteristics depending on the situation and the image the client would like to project. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 34

Comments Memorize The concepts of what to be looking for in an outfit: It should always be in harmony For example in this photo, the outfit is in harmony because of it s related color schemes, repetition of feminine characteristics in the skirt, bow, and softness of fabric Have one focal point that is dominant and the rest should be subordinate in degree. For example in this photo, the focal point is the pattern of the skirt and the large scale pattern of the skirt is dominant as compared to the medium scale pattern of the sweater which subordinate. Also begin understanding the concepts of yin and yang. This outfit has predominant yin characteristics with the curved lines of the designs, rounded shapes within the fabric, soft texture, and large patterns. The only yang quality about this outfit is the color and the stiffness of the boots and its angularity. Try to visualize the occasion, personality and values of this person based on what she is wearing: This outfit would be appropriate for business casual in a non-corporate environment or as fashionable weekend lunch attire in an urban city. It suggests a feminine and approachable personality due to the predominantly yin elements of the outfit and illustrates that comfort is important to her due to the texture of the fabric. 2012 Sterling Style Academy 35
