Magnets in the City The magnets live in the city or in the outskirts. The gigantic magnet lives in the field, twenty kilometers away from the entrance into the city and at a fair distance from the highway lest its extremely powerful influence should affect the traffic. He who comes near this magnet will see his metallic objects popping through the coat out of their pockets. The smaller magnets live in the city square. They remind people of their own will. The passer-by tries to move them, to establish new connections among them, to give a new orientation to the magnetic pieces attracted by the magnets. Thus he investigates the space. The sense of time also changes because magnets can play tricks, they can stop or delay the time. People can imagine themselves throwing iron objects, ironing machines, nibs, crowbars, sieves etc. at these magnets. Once they enter the magnetic field, in people s minds the common objects acquire a life of their own: a permanent studio is distributed to each of them. The even smaller magnets, some of which are round, very mobile, are to be found at hand in kindergartens, schools and parks. Thus, the children play with toys that seem to be endowed with a will of their own, with specific orientation. The children try to decipher the movements of the magnets; they try to play along or against their attraction exercises in time and space. Geta Bratescu Magnets in the City 1974, Bucharest 13
