Chemical Solutions Intertek has developed robust chemical testing capabilities for the textiles and apparel industry to help identify the source of and reduce chemicals in the textiles and apparel supply chain. Intertek can assist brands and retailers in gaining greater visibility into their impact on the environment by testing both their products and processes for possible hazardous chemicals including Azo dyes, phthalates, organotin, nickel, cadmium and lead created from the manufacturing of your textile and apparel products. Azo Dyes The restricted Azo dyes are those that, if the Azo group is reductively cleaved, have the capacity to release any of the 22 aromatic amines listed. These amines are carcinogenic. These dyes can be found in a wide variety of textiles and leather items including clothing, household textiles, leather clothing and upholstery, watch straps, shoes and belts. Formaldehyde Formaldehyde is used in textile production for crease resistance, flame retartdant and anti-pilling finishes. It is also used in leather tanning process and as finishing auxiliaries. In its raw state it is carcinogenic. When used as described, it can cause skin and respiratory irritation. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) PCP pentachlorophenol (CAS No 87-86-5) is one of a group of chlorinated phenols used as a fungicide to prevent rot and mildew on textiles and leather (especially cotton, viscose and silk). It is highly toxic and a suspected carcinogen. Short-term exposure can lead to damage to central nervous system while long-term effects include reproductive, liver and kidney damage. It is also bioaccumulative and persistent in the environment, toxic to aquatic species. When burned, PCP releases dioxins into the atmosphere. Perfluorooctane Sulphonate (PFOS) This was widely used in the production of certain stainrepellent and water-repellent finishes for textiles and leather. Although the use of branded products based on PFOS chemistry has been largely phased out in the textiles, paper and general clothing industries, nonbranded production might still exist. PFOS is regarded as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP), which means it is bioaccumulative. Additionally, it is toxic to the environment and to human health, and is considered to be reprotoxic. Intertek has formulated the Chemical Management Program for brands and retailers in response to environmental and industry initiatives like the brand- and retailer-led Roadmap to Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC). We can help you gain deeper understanding of visibility into the environmental impacts of your textile and apparel manufacturing process as well as your products at various stages of production, through chemical inventory audits, IPE audits and wastewater effluent testing to ensure compliance with local and international standards. Auditing Onsite and desktop auditing to ensure proper chemical management systems Training Chemical & wastewater management for workers Hazardous Chemical-free Production Testing Clearance of restricted chemicals from supply chain 6
