Designed in the 18th century to carry a cross or a watch, by the early 20th century it had become a symbol of women s freedom. The Jazz Age saw pioneers, such as Hollywood femme fatale Louise Brooks (top left: modeling a pearl sautoir in this 1928 portrait), throw off their corsets, experiment with androgyny, and enjoy the thrilling hedonism of newfound emancipation.
