3 1. German / Help with translations In Switzerland, the spoken language is very different to the written language. Although High German is the official (written) language, there is a large number of local dialects existing in Switzerland. The local dialect spoken in Zollikofen is called Berndeutsch. German courses are available for both real beginners in German and for those intending to learn Berndeutsch. Volkshochschule Bern (the Swiss Adult Education Centre) and ISA Bern run courses in Zollikofen in cooperation with the Zollikofen Culture Commission. All related details concerning these courses are published in the programme booklets available in the reception area of the Zollikofen municipal administration, at the public library as well as in local shops and banks. For further information, please contact: Volkshochschule Bern, Grabenpromenade 3, 3000 Bern 031 320 30 30 Informationsstelle für Ausländerfragen (ISA) (Information office for foreigners affairs) Speichergasse 29, 3011 Bern 031 310 12 70 2. 3. Insurance companies / organisations 4 3.1 AHV = Alters- Hinterlassenen- und Invalidenversicherung (Swiss old age, surviving dependants and invalidity insurance) Every person living and/or working in Switzerland is obliged to have an insurance and to pay the insurance premiums. People in paid work meet this obligation by insurance premiums being deducted directly from their income. Non-employed people are responsible for paying these contributions themselves. Detailed information can be obtained from your employer or at the Zollikofen AHV Agency 031 910 91 45 3.2 Health and accident insurance Every family member must be insured individually. Please ask your employer for further information on the scope of your insurance in the event of an illness or injury. 3.3 Unemployment insurance If you are unemployed or likely to lose your job shortly, it is highly recommendable to contact RAV, the local employment agency, as this is the contact point for financial support in case of unemployment. Furthermore, this agency provides you with information and advice in the process of searching for new employment. RAV Zollikofen, Industriestrasse 35, 031 636 08 00 4. A place to live 4.1 Looking for a place to live It is very hard to find a moderately priced, good place to live. In the process of house or apartment hunting, it is highly recommendable to take a look at the property to let ( zu vermieten ) pages in the local information paper Mitteilungsblatt Zollikofen (MZ) as well as in the local newspaper, the Anzeiger Region Bern. You will find these papers in your mail box every week. If you have any legally-related questions in this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the Tenancy Office/Arbitration Board Bern-Mittelland, Effingerstrasse 34, 3008 Bern 031 635 47 50 4.2 Noise Noise is often a cause of tension and disagreements between neighbours which can be avoided if a few simple basic rules are obeyed: No noise during night hours. Noisy work is only allowed on working days (including Saturdays) between 7:00 am and 12:00 noon and from 01:00 to 08:00 pm. Unfortunately, another frequent source of noise is the car: such as, for example, noise caused by leaving the engine running unnecessarily, hooting to draw someone s attention or slamming car or garage doors. Other frequent sources of complaints are radios, CD players, the TV or even musical instruments played when the windows are open, on balconies or outdoors.

6. Children and young people 8 6.1 School General information The public school system is independent from any religious confession. Schooling is free for children and young people as long as they are subject to the compulsory school attendance. The community provides the scholars with books and other school materials free of charge. Boys and girls are taught together in co-educational classes. School age Children who have attained the age of six years on 1 st May of a calendar year, are obliged to go to school at the beginning of the next school year, after the end of the next summer holidays. Compulsory schooling amounts to nine years. In Switzerland, children of foreign immigrant families who have attained the age of 15 and who can prove that they have attended school in another country, are no longer obliged to go to school. School attendance Parents are obliged to send their children to school regularly. Any person responsible for ensuring that his or her child goes to school, who culpably fails to send the child to school, renders him- or herself liable for punishment. If a child is unable to attend school, the parents are required to inform the teacher in writing of the reason for the child s absence. School dentistry A dental service at school is available to all schoolchildren.
