Shrimpton s Hill Herefords is pleased to present this catalogue of 150 two-year-old bulls for the 2017 sale. Wow, what a difference a year can make! In this, our 11th on-farm Spring sale, we are proud to present an entire catalogue of bulls that are all in the top 10% for Gestation Length for the Hereford Breed, and half of the offering are in the top 1%. 93% of the line up is below Breed Average for Birth Weight and 92% are better than Breed Average for Calving Ease. Compare these figures with our first Spring sale in 2007, where 15% of the bulls were in the top 10% for Gestation Length, 58% were lower than breed average for Birth Weight and 52% were better for Calving Ease. The genetic trend of these three traits across our entire herd has improved dramatically, and gives us great confidence that we are breeding a product that benefits the NZ Dairy Industry. The same can t be said for the Hereford Breed as a whole, where the 2017 EBV averages for Birth Weight is heavier, Calving Ease less and Gestation Length longer. Our world leading Hereford genetics, through LIC is being used in many parts of the world. In June we visited an outstanding Jersey herd in Scotland, which tails up with Hereford from LIC. They retain all their calves, so it was pretty exciting to see the white faced ones, knowing that we had bred their sires at Shrimpton s Hill, on the other side of the world. On the domestic front, last season our genetics alone, created 288,000 extra days in milk with a value of over $3million for the industry. Hereford is the fastest growing LIC semen product and to date semen sales for next mating are up 43% on this time last year. Without doubt the white faced calf is a great identifier and the value of the 4 day beef cross calf is exceptional at present. Our relationship with LIC continues to grow. In early May we were invited, as the first beef breeders ever to LIC s Breeders Day, where the cream of the dairy seed stock producers are celebrated. It was a fantastic occasion and we felt hugely honoured to be included. L-R: Murray King (LIC Chairman), John, Liz, Malcolm Ellis (LIC Manager NZ Markets), Wayne McNee (LIC CEO) In April we had a visit from LIC s Southern RSM team. We were able to show them some elite cattle and outline our breeding programme. It was a useful exercise for them to understand more about the Hereford, that they are marketing. We are looking forward to the Northern South Island RSM s visiting in September. As you are probably aware Malcolm Ellis has taken on the role of Manager of NZ Markets, so our new Manager is Casey Inverarity. Casey visited Shrimpton s Hill recently and we look forward to a continued great relationship with LIC. We have 6 bulls at Newstead at the moment on semen production all year round and another that is being progeny tested throughout the country. LIC have identified 3 promising yearlings that are now isolated and will be used in our own yearling heifer AI programme this mating. This winter we sadly lost our cornerstone donor dam, 07 299. When seeing her in 2012, LIC s Manager Malcolm Ellis convinced us to send her to the Waikato for an ET programme. Until then she had only ever produced 4 bull calves, but has now left us with 24 offspring, including 9 daughters. She s had a huge impact on our breeding programme with 8 sons being used in our herd and one of which is at Newstead. Three of her daughters are at ABS, two of which were born at 252 days gestation. We are expecting 19 ET calves any day now from these heifers, by 3 different sires. 299 also has six daughters in the herd due to calve, and sons Lot 9 and 12 in this sale, so she has definitely left her mark. Shrimpton s Hill Herefords have been invited to supply semen for the Greenlea integrated supply chain trial and also the Beef and Lamb Dairy Beef progeny test trial at Landcorp Wairakei s Renown Farm. 2017 is also our 11th year of sponsoring the Canterbury/North Otago Dairy Industry Awards. Our heartiest congratulations to Siobhan and Christopher O Malley who not only won the Regional title but went on to win the National Share Farmer of the Year. With young enthusiastic people like the O Malleys representing the Dairy Industry, the future is in good hands. The Dairy Awards evening remains a highlight on our calendar and we look forward to continuing our association in 2018. It s great to see the payout lifting and beef prices holding in these uncertain times of proposed water taxes and Mycoplasma bovis. We wish you well with your purchases and thank you for showing interest in our genetics. John, Liz, Hamish and Fiona McKerchar Shrimpton s Hill Herefords

Explanation on EBV's (Estimated Breeding Values Calving Ease Direct Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences in the ability of a sire s calves to be born unassisted from 2 year old heifers. The EBVs are reported as differences in the percentage of unassisted calvings. Higher, more positive, Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with an EBV of +5.0% would be expected, on average, to produce 3% fewer difficult calvings from 2 year old heifers than a bull with an EBV of 1.0% (6% difference between the sires, then halved as they only contribute half the genetics). Gestation Length Gestation Length EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in the number of days from the date of conception to the calf birth date. Gestation Length EBVs are expressed in days and are calculated from the joining date and birth date records for calves conceived by either AI or Hand Mating. Shorter gestation length is generally associated with lighter birth weight, improved calving ease and improved rebreeding performance among dams. In addition, calves born with a shorter gestation length are often heavier at weaning due to more days of growth. Consequently, lower or more negative Gestation Length EBVs are considered to be more favourable. For example, a bull with a Gestation Length EBV of 2 days would be expected to produce calves that are born earlier, and more easily, than a bull with a Gestation Length EBV of +2 days. Birth Weight Birth Weight EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in calf birth weight. Calf birth weight is the biggest genetic contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers. Birth Weight EBVs are expressed in kilograms (kgs) and are calculated based on weights of calves taken at birth. Small, or moderate, Birth Weight EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with a Birth Weight EBV of +2 kg would be expected to produce lighter calves at birth than a bull with a Birth Weight EBV of +6 kg, with a lower risk of a difficult birth. Please note, whilst low Birth Weight EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also generally associated with lower overall growth potential. Consequently, birth weight and growth need to be carefully balanced. Fortunately, animals can be found that have both moderate Birth Weight EBVs and above average EBVs for later growth. 600 Day Weight 600 Day Weight EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in live weight at 600 days of age. 600 Day Weight EBVs are expressed in kilograms (kg) and are calculated from the weights of calves taken between 501 and 900 days of age. This EBV is an important trait for breeders targeting the production of animals suited for heavy weight grass or grain fed markets. Larger, more positive, 600 Day Weight EBVs are generally more favourable. For example, a bull with a 600 Day Wt EBV of +70 kg would be expected to produce heavier calves at 600 days of age (18-20 months) compared to a bull with a 600 Day Wt EBV of +40 kg. 2017 HEREFORD GROUP BREEDPLAN EBV s AVERAGES GL BTW Calving Ease 600 Wt 0.1 +4.5-0.1 +70 Graph showing Genetic Trend of Shrimpton's Hill Herefords vs the Hereford Breed average for Gestation Length 5
