WAITING FOR A CURE On average one Australian child is born with cystic fibrosis every week. It is the most common life shortening genetic condition in Australia. The treatment for cystic fibrosis is lifelong, ongoing and relentless. People living with cystic fibrosis can spend the equivalent of four months of full-time work each year receiving treatment, take up to 80 pills a day, undergo tough physiotherapy regimes, hospital admissions several times a year and constantly cope with debilitating lung and gastrointestinal disease. The average life expectancy for Australians living with cystic fibrosis is less than 38 years. The prevalence of cystic fibrosis in Australia is the same as childhood leukaemia. The difference is that over 95% of children with leukaemia will be cured. There is still no cure for cystic fibrosis. When you are living with cystic fibrosis, every day matters. WHY 65 ROSES? The 65 roses theme dates back to 1965 when a four-year-old boy overheard his parents and health care professionals discussing his condition. Not fully being able to get his tongue around the words cystic fibrosis, he pronounced the disease 65 roses. The nickname stuck, and the red rose soon became a recognised international symbol for the disease. The 65 Roses Art Prize centres around our symbolic flower, inviting young and upcoming artists to redesign the humble rose to help people their age who struggle with cystic fibrosis on a daily basis.

PAINT WITH A PURPOSE Cystic Fibrosis Queensland s (CFQ) inaugural Rose Prize aims to be a celebration of our community, art and culture but most importantly, a way to raise the crucial funds needed to support Queenslanders living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). CREATING DONATING Sub-titled Paint with a Purpose, the competition requires students to paint a single rose in a style that not only reflects their personality, but can also be used as a symbol of inspiration and hope for those suffering from cystic fibrosis. Most CF sufferers are diagnosed in their childhoods or early teens, making it especially relevant for the Prize s age bracket. At the conclusion of the event, all artworks will be donated to CFQ and sold through a silent auction - allowing the students to make significant and generous contributions to our cause simply by creating art. A judging event, lead by our key judge the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Anne Quirk will be held on 14 September. Standout artworks will be awarded a selection of prizes for both individual and group entrants. Over $1,200 worth of prizes are up for grabs. These prizes will be awarded to the best piece of artwork under the judges choice category and a champions award for the class that raises the most money through their combined painting sales. Each entrant will also be award an individual certificate of appreciation. Entrants must be in grades 7 to 12, and can paint using any painting medium their single rose artwork. The only requirement is it must be on a canvas no greater than 30.5cm x 30.5cm in size. While individual entries are welcome, art teachers are especially encouraged to bring their students on board. WHERE WILL MY DONATION GO? The judging, followed by a viewing event will be held in Brisbane, 14 September and a judges selection of artworks will be displayed at Brisbane City Hall from 23 September to 7 October. The remaining artworks will be proudly displayed online for sale through silent online bidders. All proceeds from the sale of these artworks will fund the support services we provide to Queenslanders living with CF. In particular, CFQ is on a mission to provide all of our members with a subsidy to go towards purchasing their own personal nebuliser. This respiratory equipment would provide our CF members with a range of living-saving benefits such as reduced duration of frequency of hospitalisations, improved health management and reduced financial stress on the families living with CF. For information about our services visit www.cysticfibrosis.org.au/qld/.
