MAISON GUERLAIN LA COLOGNE DU PARFUMEUR
THE HISTORY OF GUERLAIN COLOGNES FEW FRAGRANCE HOUSES CAN BOAST SUCH TALENTED PERFUMERS. FOR GUERLAIN, IT IS A FAMILY AFFAIR. FOUR SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS OF PERFUMERS HAVE EACH CREATED LEGENDARY COMPOSITIONS, INCLUDING EAUX DE COLOGNE, WHICH ARE AMONG GUERLAIN S BEST-SELLERS. THE CREATION OF AN EAU DE COLOGNE IS ALMOST A RITE OF PASSAGE ON THE WAY TO JOINING THE LINE OF TRULY GREAT PERFUMERS. PIERRE- FRANÇOIS-PASCAL, AIMÉ, JACQUES AND JEAN-PAUL GUERLAIN EACH CAPTURED THE ESSENCE OF THEIR TIME FOR POSTERITY WITH A NOW LEGENDARY EAU DE COLOGNE. 1
1853 Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, the founder of Guerlain, composed for Her Majesty Empress Eugénie Eau de Cologne Impériale, a bouquet of citrus notes tinged with neroli that evokes the sweet-smelling scents mothers delicately dab behind their children s ears. Charmed by the perfumer, who became a favourite of Parisian high society, the Empress bestowed upon him the coveted title of Parfumeur Breveté de Sa Majesté, Royal Perfumer. To house his composition, Pierre-François-Pascal commissioned his glassmaker to produce the celebrated bottle decorated with bees, a symbol of the Empire, which would subsequently become the model for all Guerlain Eaux de Cologne, with a design recalling the column on the Place Vendôme. 1894 Parisians were discovering the daring delights of the Moulin Rouge, inspiring Aimé Guerlain to compose his Eau de Cologne du Coq. It was a sparkling white scent of lavender, rosemary, lemon and bergamot whose bottle, in a lighthearted patriotic allusion, sported a cockerel on its label. 1920 On a trip to the Riviera, Jacques Guerlain discovered the citron, a grainy, oval-shaped fruit. He made it the star ingredient of his Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat, adding a hint of verbena. This fresh, citrus composition instantly spirits you away to the shores of the Mediterranean. 1974 It was the turn of Jean-Paul Guerlain to compose his cologne. From his childhood memories, he drew the smell of hay, which he blended masterfully with notes of thyme, mint and lavender. He called it simply Eau de Guerlain. Its fresh, sensual accents herald a long, hot summer. 2
LA COLOGNE DU PARFUMEUR 2010 Barely a year after taking up residence at Guerlain, Thierry Wasser, the successor of Jean-Paul Guerlain, offers a highly personal version of his cologne. Originally, I created this cologne for myself. I composed it while I was working on Idylle it was my way of taking time out. I wanted a cologne that would perpetuate the classic heritage, but with a modern twist. THIERRY WASSER 3
LA COLOGNE DU PARFUMEUR Called simply Cologne du Parfumeur, this unisex composition seems to belong to the classic citrus tradition with its notes of orange blossom, lemon and bergamot, but then also reveals green, musky notes that are distinctly more original. Green is my thing, I use it all the time. For all his refined and elegant air, Thierry Wasser is first and foremost a man who loves the earth. He likes nothing better than to pack his suitcase and set off to any of the four corners of the globe in a quest for the finest raw materials. I am like a farmer I live according to the rhythm of the seasons. As soon as it s ripe, I pack my bag. For Cologne du Parfumeur, I found my orange blossom at my friend Giorgio s in Calabria. There are very few producers like him nowadays. He is someone who is passionate about doing things properly, who takes the time to harvest at just the right moment, when the flower is at its best. His orange blossom is extremely sweet, but it also has a crisp, green quality that I can't find anywhere else. That is what makes all the difference. Thierry Wasser s tireless globetrotting gives him access to extremely rare, highly condensed raw materials. Though, for many people, cologne is something you splash on in the morning when you step out of the shower, Thierry Wasser imagines it in an entirely new role: My Cologne du Parfumeur is an intimate scent. Refreshing and stimulating, it accompanies me as I wake up. Depending on how I feel, I combine it with a few drops of my regular scent to give it more power, or I wear it on its own like a real fragrance. 4
THE COLOGNES EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF MAY, TO MARK THE LAUNCH OF COLOGNE DU PARFUMEUR, GUERLAIN CUSTOMERS WILL BE OFFERED AN UNPRECEDENTED SENSORY EXPERIENCE COMBINING TASTE AND SCENT. They will be served an iced drink mixed from the same ingredients as an eau de cologne, notably lemon and orange flower water, orange juice and lavender cordial, as well as Thierry Wasser s favoured green notes, such as mint and rosemary. This cool cocktail is an original way to draw customers into the fascinating world of colognes. At the end of the session, they will be invited to discover Cologne du Parfumeur, the new composition by Thierry Wasser. 5
