DESIGNER PROFILE Showstoppers Designers discuss the inspirations of their latest works LULU TAN-GAN I m excited about layering tunics and skirts over pants. It is very Asian and suitable to handwoven fabrics. Are you working on any new collections or pieces? Tan-Gan s concept has always been travel-friendly resort wear and clothing for fashionable women on the go. The new collection s inspiration is retro, with local motifs, like palmeras and ants. We also explored marrying tradition and technology. We took tradition (knits and weaves) to another level, infusing print technology. We applied the three principles/practices of textile design in one collection: weave, knit, and print. I used new print technology that allowed us to keep the ethereal beauty of piña. The Tan-Gan collection brings together the fabric s rich past, fusing piña and knits coupled with eclectic design forms and the use of crafts, like embroidery and beadwork, inspired by indigenous motifs. Patterns have to be so well thought of and engineered for packing. It just can t be too complicated. What materials do you most enjoy working with? I love indigenous and silk materials for what they are. I like cotton for comfort, acrylic for easy handling, and linen for the bohemian luxe feel. What inspires you? It has always been Paris, without the tourists. Paris is the center of fashion business. For me, London and Antwerp are centers of design business. Easy-to-wear and chic knitwear has always been our trademark. For this group, we showed cropped dolman blouson tops and revived the twin set. We also added the circular skirt, which is very much the look of the 50s. Circular skirts are something new in our collection. We added handwoven materials and having to handsew them, we still need to adhere to the concept of travel-friendly designs. What pieces would you like to showcase for this year s Style Origin? Indigenous Couture, a collection comprised of luxurious textiles coupled with intricate techniques. It is simply a collection geared towards the luxury market. Luxury in this collection is about fabrics that are handmade and clothes that are handsewn, seasoned with a contemporary eye in fashion, using fabric imbued by the soul of the Philippines indigenous and traditional culture. 22 STYLE ORIGIN STYLE ORIGIN 23
JUN ESCARIO Paris, New York, and Milan (in that particular order) have inspired me because of their vibrant, multicultural, and unique art scenes. RANDY ORTIZ Kate Middleton is such an impeccable fashion icon. You can never go wrong with emulating her fashion sense and sensibility. Are you working on any new collections or pieces? I m currently working on a new RTW collection dubbed Royal Opulence: The Duchess of Cambridge. Obviously, the muse I have in mind is Kate Middleton. I ll be dealing with gold and silver beadwork, flat and semi-embossed floral and geometric embroideries, and hand-painted fabrics. Materials are beaded and sequined and pieces include dresses, blouses, skirts, jackets, waistcoats, jumpsuits, and pants. Are you working on any new collections or pieces? I m currently working on a bridal line that specifically caters to beach weddings and resort events. What would you say are the trademarks of your designs? First, this line defines who I am: simply sophisticated. Second, the clean lines bring distinct taste of elegance. And lastly, most modern brides prefer these lines for comfort and ease of movement. What materials do you most enjoy working with? The materials that I m using for this line are soft tulle, neoprene, stretch lace, and chiffon, while the patterns are mostly cut on the bias with body-hugging silhouettes that exude the femininity of a modern bride. What inspires you? I am inspired by the great Valentino for his exquisite taste, Oscar dela Renta s lifestyle, the classic and ageless designs of Christian Dior mixed with the modern lines of Alexander Wang and Ricardo Tisci, and the architectural techniques of Zac Posen. What pieces would you like to showcase for this year s Style Origin? I would like to showcase my own version of organic minimalism in sorbet, feminine colors. What would you say are the trademarks of your designs? Classic silhouettes, wearable designs, sartorial details, understated elegance, dainty and intricate embellishment. What materials do you most enjoy working with? I enjoy working with stretch fabrics, crepes, and silks, among others. What inspires you? Fashion books and magazines, movies, people I meet every day. I m also inspired by Dior, for voluminous skirts; YSL for jackets, jumpsuits, and pants (including my menswear sartorial details); and Madame Grès for draped dresses. Lately, I m so enamored and fascinated by Japan and France because of their awesome landscapes, apart from being fashion capitals. I don t mind being lost in these two places, even if I don t find my way home, which actually happened to me several times. Also, apart from my late parents, just about anything and anyone (not necessarily a celebrity) can influence and inspire me to create. What pieces would you like to showcase for this year s Style Origin? My collection dubbed Royal Opulence: The Duchess of Cambridge for Myth s upcoming Fall 2014 collection. This collection is all about opulent and rich fabrics, embellishments, and color schemes. It is the epitome of Kate s elegant royal fashion through the years. 24 STYLE ORIGIN STYLE ORIGIN 25
ALBERT ANDRADA I want the Albert Andrada woman to be always different from others. AMINA ARANÁZ-ALUNAN A knowledgeable, well-traveled woman who appreciates other cultures, understands craftsmanship and handmade artisan pieces, and is not blinded or limited by big labels alone. Are you working on any new collections or pieces? I m presently doing my collection for Philippine Fashion Week and for some shows abroad. This time I m using satin fabrics. French laces will always be there. Silhouettes are far from the body, which means they re voluminous gowns. Also, I m always identified with embroideries with Swarovski components and I am working on gold-leafing my dresses, which is new for me. What would you say are the trademarks of your designs? Opulent embroideries, feminine and sexy silhouettes and elegance are my trademarks. Extraordinary techniques in embellishments and embroidery are introduced in every collection. What materials do you most enjoy working with? I love laces, French lace to be specific. Swarovski components will always be a favorite. What inspires you? Everyone important in my life and people I admire always influence me as a designer. New York will always be an inspiration. The Middle East, especially Dubai, is one place that will always inspire me also. The place is so diverse. You will find people from different parts of the world so it s a mixture of different cultures. My 20 years of stay kept me so attached to it. It s a place where you always discover something new, which will help your creative juices flow continuously. What pieces would you like to showcase for this year s Style Origin? Must-see pieces, of course! I always want to be remembered as a designer who makes art wearable. Are you working on any new collections or pieces? Yes, our next collection is called Boqueria. I m doing a lot of mixed media. The collection is inspired by a market place of a mix of cultures, particularly African, Mexican, and, of course, Filipino. I m working with woven rope plastic weaving and mixed-media embroidery on printed T nalak. What would you say are the trademarks of your designs? Handmade, modern Filipino, always feminine and striking. Our pieces stand for everyday escapes. Mixing new weaving techniques a rich mix of materials all in one bag and the trademark striking details are always there. They speak of what we value at Aranáz: craftsmanship, pieces that tell a story, a way to support and promote our culture, and how we can make our traditional and native techniques relevant to the modern woman s style and manner of dressing. What materials do you most enjoy working with? Natural materials, of course! Those that we can find around our country but, of course, glamming them up to make them almost unrecognizable. What inspires you? I always have to tell a story. I don t create pieces at random. Inspiration can strike from anywhere, but I do notice that a no-fail place for inspiration for me is in nature. When that happens, then the storytelling begins. I love everything Old World, particularly 1920-1930 and 1950-1960. What pieces would you like to showcase for this year s Style Origin? T o fans of America s Next Top Model (ANTM), she is as known for her anime-sized eyes as she is for finishing first runner-up twice in the popular reality show hosted by Tyra Banks. There s got to be a record for that, jokes Allison Harvard, the artist and Internet celebrity who came close to cinching the supermodel crown on Cycle 12 and then on the first All-Stars edition of the long-running TV model search. I still have people coming up to me saying, You should have won. I think it s sweet to hear, but honestly, at this point, I m doing just fine, she assures good-naturedly. Everything happens for a reason, things wouldn t have happened quite the same way had something been just a little bit different. It is what it is. I had a wonderful adventure and a really great time, but I m so lucky to be where I am right now. Where she is right now is Manila, her home for the past several months and a city teeming with opportunities for the long, lean, blonde beauty. Through her friendship with celebrated Filipino designer Michael Cinco, she appeared as the muse of his fragrance Impalpable, then walked the runway 30 STYLE ORIGIN for Cinco and Rajo Laurel for Bench with fellow ANTM alum Dominique Reighard. She also joined Reighard and Cycle 18 winner Sophie Sumner ( One of my real best friends, says Allison) on the catwalk for Bench s denim and underwear extravaganza, Bench Universe. Of late, Allison, who hosted ETC s MEGA Fashion Crew season 3, serves as a judge on TV5 s Celebrity Dance Battle and has campaigns with Technomarine and Sprinto. A special guest of Ayala Malls Style Origin, she will appear in a series of live talk shows to discuss her fashion and personal style. A meet-and-greet with fans follows each show. She s also got another project with Bench, plus something really special at the end of the year, she hints with a smile. Despite one career coup after another, the model still can t get over how amazing things have been for her so far. I mean, I m getting my hair done in the middle of a closed mall and this is work, she says incredulously before this cover shoot. This is real life. It s one that she definitely could get used to. I can t count how many times I ve told people I just want to move here! enthuses the Texas-born, New Orleans-raised Allison. It s a lot to move away from your friends and family for so long, but I do really love it here. As long as I can keep working here, it would be great. Filipinos will definitely approve. I say this in every interview because it s true. I ve been to a lot of places and the people here are some of the nicest I ve met, she avers with a smile. It s refreshing when someone is being kind for the sake of being kind, with no agenda.
