Ariat is a proven leader in high performance Western apparel and is now proud to offer Ariat Work FR a line of flame resistant clothing designed specifically for hazardous work environments. Work wear redefined delivering unmatched fit, flexibility, and performance. An HRC or Hazard Risk Category is a rating for FR clothing that indicates the level of protection the garment provides. HRC 0 represents the least amount of protection and HRC 4 represents the most protection. Most of Ariat s clothing falls within HRC 1 or 2 based on their ATPV ratings. The National Fire Protection Agency s (NFPA) 70E is a Standard for Electrical Safety Requirements for Employee Workplaces. It requires employees to wear flame resistant protective clothing wherever there is possible exposure to an electric arc flash. For oil & petrochemical industries, this standard mandates that employees wear flame-resistant clothing if the potential for a flash fire exists. This ASTM International performance specification covers the design characteristics and flame resistance of textile materials used for occupational apparel worn by electrical workers exposed to momentary electric arc and related thermal hazards. This section of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration s (OSHA) 29 CRF 1910.269 covers the operation and maintenance of electric power generation, control, transformation, transmission, and distribution lines and equipment. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. Who is Flame-Resistant (FR) Ariat Clothing designed for? Ariat FR Clothing is designed for electricians and workers in the utility, oil, gas and petrochemical fields who are at risk of exposure of electric arc flashes and flash fires, which could cause severe or fatal burn injuries. Typical candidates for FR clothing include electric linemen, pipeline and refinery workers, as well as industrial electricians. 2. How does Ariat FR Clothing help protect against burn injury? Through the use of flame-resistant chemicals or fabric blends, Ariat clothing is designed to self-extinguish within seconds after the source of ignition is removed, which may permit the wearer to react to an accidental exposure. It is not designed to be flame proof; it is flame-resistant. 3. Can the flame-resistant chemicals be washed out? Provided you follow garment care instructions for Ariat FR Clothing, reasonable laundering should not affect the flame resistant properties of the fabric. 4. How can Ariat FR Clothing be distinguished from traditional Ariat clothing? Ariat FR Clothing is clearly identified with Ariat Work FR labels on the middle of sleeves, back necks, or on the coin pocket of denim. Product hang tags and HRC labels also help distinguish Ariat flame-resistant products. 5. What is an HRC? An HRC or Hazard Risk Category is a rating for FR clothing that indicates the level of protection the garment provides. There are five HRCs ranging from 0-4, with an HRC of 0 representing the least protection, and an HRC of 4 representing the most protection. The consensus standard assigns these categories based on the electrical maintenance that is to be performed, and each HRC correlates to a specific range of ATPVs. For example, HRC 1 would include ATPVs equal to or greater than 5 cal/cm 2 but less than 8 cal/cm 2. 6. What is an ATPV? An Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) is a rating assigned to flame-resistant clothing indicating the level of protection provided. Higher-weight fabrics typically have a higher ATPV and provide increased protection (as does the layering of FR clothing). All Ariat FR Clothing has the ATPV marked on the hang tag for easy reference. 7. Can I repair my FR Clothing? No. If you have a rip or other damage to your FR clothing, you must not use it. 8. Can I use DEET on flame-resistant clothing? No. DEET is one of the most effective mosquito repellents on the market, but it should only be used on the skin, never on FR clothing. For the most effective mosquito and tick protection, use DEET based repellents on skin (especially on exposed skin) and use a permethrin (the active ingredient in most lice shampoos) product washed into or applied to flameresistant clothing. These products do not add any appreciable flammability to FR clothing and therefore do not affect its flame-resistant properties. When using permethrin in a spray form, use the WATER-BASED formulas only. Propellants are almost always flammable in this application, so the powder form washed into the clothing or the WATER-BASED spray formulas is recommended. PG 32 Reference
CARE INSTRUCTIONS WARNING: Failure to launder garment properly can result in loss of flame resistance properties. Flame resistant clothing should be laundered separately from the family wash to prevent cross contamination. Washing new garments before wearing is recommended. Wash new garments separately from other garments. Turn garment inside out before washing for best results. Machine wash using typical home laundry detergent. Liquid detergents or other products containing hydrogen peroxide should not be used. Avoid starch, fabric softener or any other laundry additives such as soil release or anti-statics. Bleach must never be used on FR fabrics. Chlorine bleach (sodium hypocholorite) and oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide), either alone or in combination with other chemistry must never be used. Denim can be washed on the Cotton/Sturdy cycle with the wash temperature set to Hot. Woven shirts can be washed on the Cotton/Sturdy cycle with the wash temperature set to Warm. Knit shirts and Polartec apparel should be washed on the Gentle cycle with the wash temperature set to Cold. Tumble dry. Dry denim and woven shirts on the Cottons setting, but do not over dry the garments to avoid shrinkage. Dry knit shirts and Polartec apparel on Low Heat, remove promptly. Iron as needed on appropriate fabric setting.* Dry cleaning does not affect the FR properties of the fabric, but, in some cases, dry cleaning chemical residue left on the fabric could burn.* * Polartec apparel cannot be ironed nor dry cleaned.
