About Us MISSION: The Fashion Group International is a global, non-profit, professional organization with 5000 members in the fashion industry including apparel, accessories, beauty and home. The FGI mission is to be the pre-eminent authority on the business of fashion and design and to help its members become more effective in their careers. To do this, FGI provides insights on major trends in person, online and in print; access to business professionals and a gateway to the influence fashion plays in the marketplace. HISTORY: It all began in 1928 when 17 women, gathered by Edna Woolman Chase, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, met for lunch in a modest midtown New York restaurant. They had three things in common: Each held a job of consequence in the business of fashion, each held all the others in high regard and together they held a belief that fashion needed a forum, a stage, or a force to express and enhance a widening awareness of the American fashion business and of women s roles in that business. The Fashion Group, conceived at an informal luncheon in 1928 became an organization in 1930, with a place, a purpose, by-laws, officers and women eager to be members. Some of those Founding and Charter members were: Elizabeth Arden, Margaret Case, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helena Rubinstein, Julia Coburn, Lilly Dache, Jessica Daves, Nan Duskin, Edith Head, Eleanor LeMaire, Claire McCardell, Clare Potter, Virginia Pope, Dorothy Shaver, Adele Simpson, Carmel Snow, Miss Tobé Their first office space was donated by Louis Fairchild in his Women's Wear Daily building on East 12th Street. The second office space was at 572 Madison Avenue, donated by Harper s Bazaar. Then in 1934, from the minutes of the Board meeting of October 18: Discussion as to how to meet the rent of the contemplated space in 30 Rockefeller Center included a Fashion Group party using talent within the membership lampooning fashion, to be known as The Fashion Follies. Today, The Fashion Group offers membership to both men and women.

Web Posted: 07/09/2009 12:00 CDT Designs on local Fashion Week By Michael Quintanilla - Express-News If New York, Miami, Chicago, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Dallas and Austin can do it, why not a fashion week actually four days of shows, workshops and parties for San Antonio? The Alamo City chapter of the New York-based Fashion Group International is setting its designs on making it happen, determined to let the rest of the world know that San Antonio's fashion image isn't just about wearing cowboy boots and hats, says Priscilla Martinez, the group's program coordinator. Martinez and Sheila Masterson, the group's regional director, and other key members are involved in pulling together the Oct. 6 to 9 event at various locales. In the planning stages are two fashion shows. "Go Green" will kick off the four-day occasion with an ecofriendly runway theme. The other, "A Night of Stars" gala will close out fashion week with a show featuring local designers, hopefully "a big name" and later, an awards program honoring emerging talent and individuals who have made a difference in the industry, locally. While the shows require purchasing a ticket, many, if not all of the other events will be free. Additionally, educational workshops, seminars and fashion exhibits are in the works. Several committees (publicity, sponsorship, educational and fashion show production) are in place, manned by fashion group members and other volunteers who turned out for a recent meeting at the International Academy of Design and Technology that offers a fashion program. "With three months to go, we've got the wheels turning," Martinez says about the fall event. "We have a lot of talent here and this talent needs to be cultivated. People grow up here, learn here and train here. They go off and do big things in New York and Europe. And they tend to come back to San Antonio and bring their art back with them. San Antonio is where we want them to make their mark as well and having a fashion week will show that we do have a lot to offer." For more information and to volunteer email fgisanantonio@gmail.com or check in at http://sanantonio.fgi.org.
