Publisher s note t IT S A POWERFUL LESSON, REMINDING US THAT WHILE A SHIP CAN REMAIN INDEFINITELY MOORED IN HARBOUR, SECURED BY ROPES AND ANCHORS AND SHELTERED FROM STORMS AND WAVES, THAT S NOT WHAT A SHIP IS FOR. he start of a new year is always exciting. It s an opportunity to begin again, drawing on every strength and skill we have to live as the best versions of ourselves. Doing that isn t a chore. It doesn t require us to ransack self-help manuals, consult New Age soothsayers or work ceaselessly and selfconsciously on improving ourselves. All that s needed is enough confidence to trust who we are and see the reward in any risk. Tracee Ellis Ross, who graces our cover this month, is a great example of that confidence. Like her legendary mother Diana, who played a crucial role in defining the Sixties as the age of Aquarius and showed the world that black women are not only beautiful, but also sexy, talented and self-assertive, Tracee s carrying the banner for bold, boundless living. We hope her words inspire you, excite you and kick-start your year. Talking of risk, our feature on p100 explores the consequences of letting fears and insecurities mire us in damaging situations. It s a powerful lesson, reminding us that while a ship can remain indefinitely moored in harbour, secured by ropes and anchors and sheltered from storms and waves, that s not what a ship is for. We also bring you interviews with dynamic women in business and the arts, a feast of summer fashion, sage financial advice and more. Here s wishing you all a fabulous, healthy, happy and abundant 2018! Photographer: Aart Verrips @ Lampost January 2018 06

Editor s note Season's pickings There s something beautiful and liberating about the beginning of a new year. Besides our wellmeaning tendencies to reform an errant diet or eradicate love handles, the new leaves and blank canvases created by a brand-new year draw an inspired halo around this time. We ve infused that energy into this January issue, with a generous sprinkling of powerful femmes to propel us confidently into 2018. Tracee Ellis Ross is someone we ve loved for an eternity, for reasons ranging from her hair to her unique and fearless sense of style. The strident pep talks she s prone to give when on the public stage only endear her further to us. When she announced My life is mine at Glamour s recent Women of the Year Summit, blithely ignoring questions about her choice to be single and child-free, we collectively swooned anew. We salute the permission she gives women everywhere to speak up, sleep with who we want, eat what our bodies intuitively tell us to eat, wear training bras instead of push-up bras and, critically, post selfies that haven t been perfected by Facetune. Every day Ellis Ross teaches us to frame ourselves in an authentic and meaningful way, and we love her for it. Blogger, photographer and model Lesego Legobane, better known as Thickleeyonce, is another inspiring role model on our pages this month. We shot an extended fashion and beauty editorial with her, wanting to celebrate her in the wake of hateful social media comments about her weight that threatened to engulf her participation at SA Fashion Week. She was consummately graceful and generous on set and there s something about being utterly embracing of your body that rubs off on others in the best way. Opening our Radar section this month (p104) and rounding off our ode to self-love is the incredible Palesa Masiteng, who shares her model-ready fitness tips. We hope you enjoy this body confidence issue and that it inspires you to begin 2018 with pride. May it bring all of us new ways of finding happiness, h ealth and fulfilment!
