In 1900, a newborn American s life expectancy was 47 years, but by 2000, it had increased to 74.8 years... We are no longer dying in droves from diseases caused by poor sanitation; now we are suffering from chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, caused by our affluent and indolent lifestyle, and allergic diseases such as asthma and eczema, which many researchers believe are induced by too much cleanliness. Many of us seem to be suffering from alienation and depression as well. Our great-grandmothers homes were obviously clean enough, or we wouldn t exist. The extra sanitation promised by in-the-tank toilet cleaners, antimicrobial dish liquids, disinfecting sprays, and air fresheners is not making us happier or healthier. BASIC INGREDIENTS FOR NON-TOXIC HEALTHY HOME CARE BOUTIQUE RECIPES Clean your home without risking your life! BAKING SODA Cleans, deodorizes, mildly abrasive. Stock up in bulk at warehouse stores! Softens water to increase sudsing and cleaning power of soap. Great scouring powder. Use a confectioner s sugar shaker to dispense. Similar to commercial powdered abrasive cleaners. Has the added benefit of being an odor absorber. Use it in the laundry. Use alone with water and sponge to scrub out tough stains like a scouring powder, or it can be added to a solution to add extra deodorizing power. Leave baking soda paste with lemon oil on particularly tough stains (even pots and pans) for 15 20 minutes before wiping away. Great for carpet deodorizing. Natural grease-remover for garage, toys, bicycles and patio. Polishes silver. Beautiful non-toxic drain cleaner. Try it before finding a plumber. BORAX Cleans and deodorizes. Excellent disinfectant. Softens water. Available in laundry section of grocery stores. Can be mixed with water, baking soda or white vinegar. Borax works as laundry soap, and can clean wallpaper, painted walls and painted surfaces. CASTILE SOAP Whether in liquid or a bar, this multi-tasking soap is useful for so many uses in home care! CLUB SODA A great dirt-dissolver and stain lifter for fabrics whether upholstery or clothing. It can also double as a glass cleaner. When using club soda as a stain lifter, allow it to soak into the stain before blotting. Do not rub the stain or you risk smearing it around. CREAM OF TARTAR Believe it or not, it s actually useful for more than baking. Removes stains from porcelain. ESSENTIAL OILS Essential oils of birch, balsam fir, eucalyptus, cinnamon, lemon, lemongrass, sweet orange, rose, tea tree, peppermint, lavender, scotch pine, your favorite environmental blend, or oil of your choice all have anti-bacterial qualities some more than others. Some are powerful anti-fungal agents. All are health enhancing.
BIO-DEGRADABLE HOUSEHOLD SOAP CLEANER Biodegrades safely and completely and is non-toxic. Available from many sources. Liquid soap is much safer & environmentally friendly than liquid detergent of any kind. Clean effectively without synthetic scents, colors or other additives. Helpful in removing stains and cutting grease. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE Can be diluted to remove stains from heavily soiled whites and other clothing and a number of surfaces. Loses its potency when exposed to air. Keep well capped. Dip a cotton swab in diluted hydrogen peroxide to remove stains from thick white curtains. Wipe down any areas that you re wanting to disinfect. Use as a produce-wash for fruits and veggies. Use straight, diluted, mixed with essential oils. LEMON JUICE Highly acidic liquid, works extremely well on hard water stains and on built-up soap scum. Mix lemon juice with vinegar and/or baking soda to make a paste similar to Soft Scrub brand cleaning scrub Mix it with olive oil for a wood furniture polish. Lemon juice left to sit on a rust spot can completely erase the rust and hard water. This may need to be repeated several times before the spot is completely gone. MISTING SPRAYS Essential oils that are fun to use for Misting Sprays are: grapefruit, lemon, orange, scotch pine, as well as some of your favorite blends of oil. Be sure to label your Misting Sprays Prepare several for the many and varied uses in your home. A few pleasant, non-toxic uses: In each bathroom rather than toxic deodorizing sprays, in your kitchen to freshen up from cooking odors, in your bedroom for linens, and to promote relaxation at the end of a stressful day, in your entryway to greet guests and family coming home from school and work, in each of your children s rooms to promote peaceful transition from the day to sleep time, in your home office to focus and to promote pleasant work time, in your car use rather than the toxic car deodorizers from the car wash! OILY-OILS Olive oil, jojoba wax, and beeswax are all useful for non-toxic wood care. Much more will be said about these as we discuss wood care in our Home Care Series. SALT Use fine-grain pure salt as an alternative scouring powder. Works well as a rust remover when paired with lime juice.
WASHING SODA Indispensible to non-toxic home care. Heavy-duty scourer. Do not use on fiberglass it can scratch. Great substitute for toxic solvents. Cuts grease and removes stains. Disinfects. Softens water. Best to wear gloves when using it. Available in laundry section of grocery store or in pure form from chemical supply houses as sodium carbonate. HEALTHY HOME CARE WHITE VINEGAR Make sure it s from grain, rather than being made from petroleum. Cuts grease and freshens. Pick up a gallon of it for less than $3. When using white vinegar for normal cleaning, you will want to dilute vinegar in an equal part water but it can be used straight from the bottle on tough stains and mineral deposits. White vinegar is a deodorizer, like baking soda, and is also a disinfectant. Because it is colorless and contains no colorants, it will not stain. Vinegar does not work well on marble or on grout, and may damage it because of vinegar s acidity. The vinegar smell will linger while wet, but will quickly dissipate while drying. Effective stain remover on sinks, floors, stove tops, chrome and counter tops Can dissolve scale. Use to remove rings from your toilet bowl! Neutralizes many stains. Great to help fight mildew. Use to clean in the kitchen stove tops, appliances, counter tops. Great in window cleaning recipes. Make into a great floor and carpet cleaner. If you have family members with sensitive skin, adding half a cup of vinegar to your rinse cycle will quickly break down laundry detergent and act as a natural fabric softener. ORGANIC VODKA Useful for laundry care Great disinfectant Use for making home fragrances as a fixative. BE AWARE SCENTED CANDLES Many commercially available scented candles and air fresheners are not only pricey, they re loaded with toxins, hazards to our health and the health of our family members! One recent study cites statistics that show as many as 10 hazardous compounds in these popular home-scenting products. Instead of using inexpensive, toxic, scented candles and air fresheners use the health enhancing, non-toxic misting sprays with your favorite oils! Replace candles with clean-burning bees wax or soy candles. Or find a renewable sourced palm oil candle.
