Celebrating the first annual SA Women in Energy Award The much anticipated launch of the South African Women in Energy Network (SAWIEN) held in August 2014 offered the prominent women in attendance another exciting surprise, with the announcement of the first annual SA Women in Energy Award. According to Marlene van Rooyen, founder of SAWIEN, this award celebrates extraordinary women and validates them for their hard work in advancing the energy landscape. It identifies an individual who is an outstanding exemplar in the local energy industry. It not only recognises achievers, but also encourages and inspires other women. The awarding of this prize is a matter of enormous prestige and status, and will be promoted and published nationally in various media, giving the recipient further exposure and recognition for herself, as well as her organization, explains Marlene. The SA Women in Energy Awards will be annually awarded to women working in the broader energy and energy efficient fields, as nominated by their peers or themselves and judged by a competent judging panel from the industry. This year, as the conveners of SAWIEN, we have decided, along with two other external judges, to grant the award to an individual who has done extraordinary work in terms of energy and energy efficiency, enthuses Marlene. She stands head-and-shoulders above men and women in her industry, bringing about real positive change. She has also been instrumental in strategy, direction and constructing of the energy efficiency standards in South Africa. She is determined, resolute, tenacious and fair. The industry, and South Africa as a whole, is a better place for her extensive contributions. Marlene announced with great pride that the first SA Women in Energy Award goes to Lisa Reynolds, Sustainability Director at Saint-Gobain and Chair of the SABS Technical Committee. 1 / 5

Lisa conveyed her appreciation for receiving this award, as it not only recognises her significant contributions to the energy sector, but also helps to set an extremely high industry standard for those aspiring to achieve such an honourable award. Few people leave such an indelible mark in an industry such as she has, concludes Marlene. She leaves a tangible and impactful legacy. It is always an honour and a privilege to work with her. The annual 2010 SAPOA Property Journalist Awards were held at a prestigious event in May at Sun City where Walls & Roofs magazine was awarded the Best Property Publication of the Year Award for its attractive layout, informative material and good content. It is wonderful to have this coveted award bestowed on us. To be named the SAPOA Property publication 2010 is an honor and testament to our dedication to the property and construction industry. We have an amazing team that puts this publication together and they must also be praised for their hard work and tremendous commitment, said Marlene E. van Rooyen, Editor of Walls & Roofs. Elma Kloppers, specialist property writer was announced as the Property News Journalist of the Year and was given top honors for a number of publications, including Sake24 in Beeld, Die Burger, Volksblad and Rapport, at the awards. Kloppers was highly commended for her insightful and investigative reporting on property related issues, including controversial ones, as well as her distinctive, clear writing style. Through these Awards, we are able to recognise and pay tribute to outstanding journalists who report on the South African property market, said Neil Gopal, CEO of SAPOA. As in previous years, the quality of the entries has been excellent, demonstrating the stature of the Awards amongst media in the property sector. Media in Africa has secured a number of awards over the last few years. In 2008 the company won awards at the TABBIE Awards, PICA Awards and the ETA awards. The company was established in 1983 and has grown into a leader in South Africa s niche magazine market. Media in Africa reaches your clients and provides them with updated and relevant industry news. We offer clients focused magazines that reach a wide range of professionals in particular industries. Partnering with us gives you a growing marketing platform, tangible benefits and a means of getting your message across in the industry. 25 in Africa scoops a 2008 TABBIE award 3 / 5

25 in Africa, Africa s Independent Energy Publication was announced as one of SA s only two magazines to receive a 2008 TABBIE award. The magazine received an Honourable Mention in the category, Front Cover Photograph for its edition entitled The increasing oil price'. With almost 800 editorial and design entries from across the globe, the win is an impressive achievement and came as the magazine celebrated two years of print. At a time when oil is fast becoming a finite resource, their striking cover picture of an oil plant was both timeous, topical and one which invokes debate. The photograph foregrounds the plant, but also places it within semi-darkness, echoing the mystery that shrouds predictions about its availability, future and increasing price. Our TABBIE Award is evidence of 25 in Africa s immense potential and impact on the marketplace, and is only the start of even further successes and accolades, commented the publication s editor and co-founder Marlene E van Rooyen. Van Rooyen is determined to see the magazine, with its tri-pronged focus: energy, Africa and the environment, become a renowned force in the energy reportage industry. INTIEM earns top honours at the PICA awards 2008 This year s PICA awards saw INTIEM walk away with a Highly Commended in the category Overall publishing excellence. Judge Muzi Kuzwayo, Group CEO of TBWAHuntLascaris, commented that South Africa is built on bravery, and that bravery in entering a new publishing 4 / 5

niche was a criterion that influenced the final selection. The Magazine Publishers Association of SA s (MPASA) PICA awards recognise magazine publishing and editorial excellence over the past 12 months. Entered into the Launch/Relaunch section, INTIEM s ability to uplift, inspire and motivate its readers to make a difference to their marriage every day saw them victorious amongst fierce competition. INTIEM s aim is to empower readers and give them permission to take control of their sex life a topic seldom focussed on with such dedication, or to the same depth, in other publications. Publishing house Media in Africa believe that the magazine challenges readers to renew their commitment to creating a marriage full of the joys of sex, intimacy and love. Two staff win a 2008 eta Award During November, 25 in Africa, Africa s Independent Energy Publication s staff secured a joint win in the 2008 eta Awards. Marlene E van Rooyen, the publication s Editor, and Jody Boshoff, the publication s Journalist, won the Women in Industries category. The eta Awards is an annual event sponsored by Eskom and endorsed by the DME which has been run for the past 18 years. The purpose of the awards is to promote the more efficient use of energy, as well as award exceptional efforts made by individuals and companies towards promoting the more efficient use of energy. Commenting on the win, Van Rooyen said: It is an honour to be counted in the calibre of the previous recipients; a league of extraordinary energy warriors! 25 in Africa scoop 5 / 5
